The App Gap

As much as I like my Lumia 1020, it becomes impractical when you want to use accessories that do not come with a Windows Phone app. It's not about the big name apps from Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat et. al. For Windows Phone, Rudy Huyn has developed lots of apps covering those. It's the smaller startups that can afford an iPhone app. And an Android app. Once they have developed those, they are covering most of the market.

This is the real app gap. And the reason I am currently using the iPhone with my UP24.

You nailed it once more... sigh. And also the same with each and every "in" app.... it is just not available which sucks big time especially for young users.

my iOS device held ~100 Apps, the WindowsPhone around 20. for me, the 1020 has been at very welcome relief, in one word: focus!

I am not an app collector. But how does focus solve the above issue?

Volker Weber, 2014-05-28

Yup. Frankly, I feel discriminated.

well, it doesn't (and I am happy with it - because of it).

on the other hand, yes, it is sometimes anoying, when an app is not available for WP. But then again, a good webbrowser would often solve this a lot better.

and: i don't use fitnesstracker (yet) :)

I tried several fitness trackers. But personally i really see no benefit: On working days i always reach 9000 steps in the evening. On weekends, it is more. Good to know. But now what? To measure sleep i have to tell the tracker when i go to sleep and press a symbol once i wake up. For sports a fitness tracker is not really helpful. The most practical thing is the vibration alarm on fitbit as i switch off all my alarms on the phone at work: So i do not miss my train.

I bought a Fitbit thinking that I could remove the ball-ache of logging how long I spent pounding the treadmill, and how long it took to run 5km and how many calories it burnt... but it doesn't provide that kind of accuracy to that micro level. But it is interesting to look at a day and identify when I walked the dogs, or walked to the train station and how that compares with an hour at the gym. And that I rarely get 6 hours sleep.

There is a good Fitbit app for Windows Phone, not an official one but some kind person has provided it.

Darren, is the 3rd party fitbit app good enough? Curious.
