Apple CEO Tim Cook on equality

by Volker Weber

I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.

A must read. What a statement!

Andy Brunner, 2014-10-30

"Interested observer" can't stand behind his / her proper name I note. Ignorance. Bigotry. Cowardice.

Ben Poole, 2014-10-30

Dear interested observer, I think being proud of the parts of yourself you don't want to change is perfectly sane and well adjusted, both of which are virtues

Sorry guys, I delete all comments from anonymous haters. They hate for one of three reasons: (1) they see you as a threat, (2) they hate themselves, (3) they want to be you.

This is wonderful.

Attitudes towards homosexuality have moved surprisingly quickly. Leviticus 18:22 is finally no longer poisoning our sense of morality, at long last.

I mourn the loss of Alan Turing. 1952 was only sixty years ago, and he was chemically castrated by the state (!), and killed himself. What a change from today.

Don't forget, though, that the situation is worsening in some countries. India shamefully went backwards and made homosexuality illegal again, and in many African countries it's now life-threatening to be known as an homosexual.

Chris and Martin, I think the message cannot be repeated enough. The societal change is not over yet - look in Germany at the Verbindungen, for instance. Or the LSE Rugby club, which was closed last month because they were unapologetically homophobic and racist.

Andrew, I struggle with the foreign country part of your comment.

I personally am all for this type of equality. I actively push my home country towards my thoughts on the matter, and I naturally wish other countries would adopt my philosophy. Then, another part of me realizes that other countries can adapt internally if they wish, and I shouldn't bother trying to understand or influence their situation.

Mike McPoyle, 2014-10-30

Mike,

You are talking about cultural relativism, right? I admit that there is a danger of taking one's own culture as a reference point, and declaring other countries or cultures as 'divergent'.

But surely we can agree on a set of rules that should be applied across the world - and we have it in the declaration of human rights.

Your argument of 'let them adapt internally if they wish' would condone such horrors as FGM, for instance.
