De-clutter your inbox in Office 365

by Volker Weber

Today we are beginning the roll out of Clutter to Office 365 business customers, which brings the power of Office Graph to your inbox. Clutter is designed to help you focus on the most important messages in your inbox. It uses machine learning to de-clutter your inbox by moving lower priority messages out of your way and into a new Clutter folder. Ultimately, Clutter removes distractions so you can focus on what matters most.

It's going to take a while until I trust machine learning to handle my messages.

I will probably never trust in that.

Aren't "important" messages just the opposite of spam messages? Machine learning works pretty well to handle those nowadays.

I just wonder what will happen to those messages or tasks that are not so important at the moment but still have to be done at some time. They might never appear at someone's inbox.

The Azure Machine Learning platform is actually super impressive... very powerful. I will give feedback once I am able to use the clutter feature. To me, it sounds promising as I am a "only inbox" person.

Scott Souder was talking yesterday at the SNOUG about IBM's plans to do just that; use algorithms to automatically pre-sort your e-mails.

Three thoughts on this:

1. The algorithms are making their choices based on past behaviour, and will actually enforce that behaviour. If you are an employee who immediately responds to e-mails from your boss but ignores e-mails from customers, that behaviour will actually get reinforced.

2. It makes me think of the Laputans in Gulliver's travels.

3. Surely Inbox clutter is just symptomatic of bad organisation or bad teamwork?

- If you are cc:d on every e-mail from your subordinates, it's probably because you are not delegating properly and the subordinates are afraid of taking decisions without your approval. You don't need to be informed about every single little thing, just delegate a whole batch of responsibility.

Good thoughts, Andrew.
