Back in Black

Pebble continues to be my favorite wearable. Runs up to a week on one charge, display is always on and delivers the two interesting data points at all times: date/time and step count. My phone is on silent, all notifications come in through Pebble.

The watchface is Futura Steps and utilizes the Smartwatch Pro app written my Max Bäumle who continues to provide me with a stream of new Pebble watches. So far I have used a Red Kickstarter Edition and a Matte Black Steel. Today I broke the red watch by losing one of the buttons and Max gave me a Black Kickstarter Edition instead. This is the least flashy model and I quite like it.

Volker, your "My phone is on silent..." comment crystalized a thought for me: I believe the "killer app" of these various "smart watches" will, FOR WOMEN, be simply to let you know your phone is ringing. Sure, there are other types of notifications the really smart watches can handle, but I'm guessing my wife is somewhat typical in carrying her phone in her purse where in noisy environments she can never hear it or feel it ringing (or so she says ;-) ).

Of course, the watch wouldn't need to be that smart to pull this trick off, so many traditional phone manufacturers might be able to just add a bluetooth trick to their otherwise basic fashion watches. So look out soon for ads for women's "smart" watches directed at frustrated geeky husbands/boyfriends. One can hope anyway...

Bluetooth LE and a vibrator, yes, I see where you are going with this.

LOL! You give me too much credit, but now that we're heading down that road, I can indeed foresee "women's smart pocket watches" becoming the next "personal massager".

@Kevin: my Miband is vibrating on incoming calls. It also tracks your steps and your sleep. Price is below 20€. Of course not such a smart device as a watch ;-)
