This is very hard to believe

We live in a nation where public acceptance of evolution is the second lowest of thirty-four developed countries, just ahead of Turkey. Roughly half of Americans reject some aspect of evolution, believe the earth is less than ten thousand years old, and that humans coexisted with dinosaurs. Where I live, many believe evolution to be synonymous with atheism, and there are those who strongly feel I am teaching heresy to thousands of students.

why's that hard to believe? Creationism is a story of success in america. In 2004 or so i feared it would be the damn same story of succeess in germany. but luckily it wasn't. Even though there are enough of them under us and my last boss was one of them. He told me that scientist are liars, who can't prove their story. no need to argue with that kind of people ...

If evolution is just a theory, then so is God.
As an American (in the south, no less), I highly doubt this statement:

I can maybe believe that 50% of Americans reject some aspect of evolution. But I refuse to believe that 50% of Americans reject some aspect of evolution AND believe that the earth is < 10000 years old, AND that humans coexisted with dinosaurs.
The author, like so many on either side of the evolution vs. creationism fence, is pitching their belief as an all-or-nothing approach. What about the entire concept of Intelligent Design? Or the concept that evolution that was "guided" along the way by a higher being(s)? Or perhaps evolution to primates followed by a sudden "creation" event from a creator/god/dna manipulator/etc. that gave birth to the first humans?
What is far more likely is that 50% of Americans don't believe that it is *solely* time and random forces that brought us to where we are.
That was funny. I mean to non-Americans. ;-)
