The display is on
by Volker Weber
In bright sunlight, the Apple watch does not even put up a fight. The display is on and with your own eyes you can see something. But the contrast is too low to register on the camera. In low light the Apple Watch looks great and colors on Pebble Time look washed out. When it's dark, you need the backlight that comes on with a flick of your wrist.
If you think that bright sunlight is unfair and that you would protect it with your other hand to read it, this is outside in the shade, against a dark background, with HDR. Still pretty hard on the eyes:

Totally looking forward getting my Pebble Time soonish (:
Volker, mich würde ernsthaft interessieren, wie das Microsoft Band hier abschneidet - hast Du noch eines?
Ich hatte es nur für eine Woche. Wie würde es abschneiden? So wie die Apple Watch.
Thanks. Pebble Steel rocks.
btw: 19866 vs. 14514 -> lazy dog?
No, two people.
Scheduled to get my Pebble Time later this month too. Looking forward to it. Sunlight also makes my iPad pretty useless whereas the Kindle Paperwhite works great.
great watch ! I own the steel, and I can hardly wait, to be able to buy the new one!
I don't have one yet to judge it myself. Is the Apple Watch display harder to read in bright sunlight than the ones of the iPhone or iPad?
Yes, the display on the iPhone is brighter. Both are reflective. Pebble uses a different technology. Try reading on iPad and Kindle. It's the same difference.
Thanks Volker.
I understand the different technologies, but for me the iPad won over the Kindle in spite of Kindle's advantages in bright light. I do not have the luxury to sit in the sun for long during the day. So the other strength made the difference. Wanted to understand, whether the Apple Watch is too "pale" to be used outside ...
@Jan: I can use it outside without any problems :)
Using the Apple Watch for almost four weeks and did not really had a problem with the display, as soon as the body shadow is on the watch no problem at all. Still young enough to be able to turn the body.
Thanks, Bernd!
I'll give it a try, since I find the competitors way too crude to make me longing for.
