How the Galaxy S6 edge almost beat the iPhone 6+

Nothing has ever come this close to replacing my trusty iPhone 6 Plus like the Galaxy S6 edge. Nothing.
This is a whole new chapter for Samsung. This machine feels like it was made by Apple. No more cheap plastic, no squeaky back cover. It's solid, it's beatiful, and it's a joy to use. Screen and camera beat the iPhone 6+, hands down. It has wireless charging, it's smaller, lighter and feels just right. Lots of things are easier, like adding music and offloading photos and video.
I was ever so tempted of switching to the Galaxy. But then I didn't. There have been a couple of things that annoy me. Here is a short list:
- Typing is more difficult. I get too many autocorrect errors. Way too many. It feels like I have to type everything three times. Yes, I know, I can swap the keyboard.
- It's very hard to just browse stuff. Almost everything you touch on the front does something. The screen goes to the edge, the area below the screen is touch sensitive. That means I am constantly telling the edge to do things that I don't want to tell it. Cursor jumps around when typing an email, etc. I think the standard S6 will fare better than the S6 edge in this respect.
- Withings Health Mate does not work as well. I keep track of my steps without wearing an activity tracker. On the iPhone Health Mate is quick to update, on Android it's lagging behind, often by thousands of steps. It will then update, but I have no idea how to force the update.
- A couple of apps I use don't exist on Android. It does not seem like a big deal, but it makes me keep the iPhone on. And when it's on, why carry two phones?
- Scrolling. It's hard to imagine how the Android camp is unable to make scrolling as smooth as on the iPhone. No matter how much power they throw at it, no matter how many revisions of Android come out, then can't seem to get it right. It's not even a contest.
The photo above shows two very similar designs. But once you have seen it, you cannot unsee it. Notice the lack of basic alignment on the Galaxy. Everything on the iPhone is perfectly aligned. Nothing aligns on the Galaxy. Same thing on the top. It does not bother me at all when using it, but it shows how much effort Apple puts in to make things per-fect.
So, here I am. Lots of reasons to love the Galaxy S6 edge. But it cannot pull me away from the iPhone 6+.

So, hardware is great and software still has rough edges? Get rid of the Java/Dalvik stuff, Google! Make the NDK usable!

Andreas, manchmal schütze ich Kommentatoren, die Unfug schreiben, indem ich den Beitrag lösche. Aber nicht immer. ;-)
...und ich dachte nach dem Lesen der letzten Galaxy-Blogeinträge schon der Volker Weber wäre für APPLE verloren. Wie so oft relativieren sich die ersten Eindrücke nach einer gewissen Zeit und man sieht genauer hin. Den Smartphones aus dem Android Lager gelingen immer wieder einzelne tolle Aufschläge (Screen, Camera, Preis/Leistung, etc.). Zum Matchwinner wird man aber nur wenn das Gesamtpaket aus Hard- und Software perfekt harmonisiert. Dies ist nunmal derzeit bei APPLE/iOS am besten.
Bernd, ich bin nie verloren, weil ich mir alles Neue mit offenen Augen anschaue. Das Lumia 1520 war beispielsweise dem iPhone 5S so weit überlegen, dass iPhone zur Nummer zwei wurde. Dann verlor Microsoft den Faden und Apple brachte das 6 Plus heraus.
Alles, was man heute in dieser Liga kaufen kann, ist absolut fantastisch. Auch die neuen Galaxy. Die meisten Kunden haben nicht die Möglichkeit, so genau zu vergleichen und werden mit ihrem Kauf absolut zufrieden sein, egal ob iPhone oder Galaxy.
Spannender ist sicherlich die Frage, ob Samsung tatsächlich das Preisniveau von Apple halten kann.
Ich bin jetzt auf das LG G4 gespannt. Für mich hören sich die Daten vielversprechend an.
Ich habe mittlerweile die für mich ideale Kombination gefunden, ein iPhone 6 und ein 6+ :-)
@Wolfgang: Vielen Dank für Deine Zusammenfassung und die Hinweise zum G4. Über das Galaxy Note 4 (ggf. 5) habe ich auch schon nachgedacht.
Was mich von einem Wechsel von iOS zu Android immer noch etwas abhält, ist die Frage der Investitionssicherheit in Hinblick auf zukünftige Software Updates. Da ist Apple ziemlich gut. Bei Android habe ich das Gefühl, dass man sehr oft in einer Sackgasse landet.
Zwei Jahre wird man beim SGS6 sicher sein. Das SGN4 hat schon ein Update hinter sich (4.4 auf 5.0).
I guess I should come clean...I must be a visigoth or other barbarian since I don't see the beautifully balanced difference.
I *do* see how the touch-sensitive edges could be an issue. This is one of the things that bother me about the current smartphone design... all the sides have buttons that are too easy to hit when just holding the phone.. or passing it someone else. And this is one of the things I like about LG's approach of putting the volume on the back, where you fingers naturally fall.

Das wäre in meinem Fall das Note4 (SD-Karte, USB OTG,
Kamera/Video, Wechselakku, Bluetooth für alles Nutzbar, usw.)

It's worth pointing out that both Apple and Samsung have decided that being thin is better than having a bigger battery.
Having used both the newest Apple and Samsung devices, battery has never been an issue for me. The iPhone 6 Plus easily last a full day. The Galaxy is also pretty good, if you don't run too many apps in the background. And then it has wireless charging which is a game changer.
I use the second battery when I am walking for hours in the forest.
I always use for every walk a tracker and make many pictures and videos.

Mein Tracker setzt das begonnene Tracking nach Akkuwechsel fort.

Those microphone/speaker holes on the iPhone are creepily large (in the picture).

Nachdem ich so einige Berichte gelesen habe, warte ich vielleicht doch noch etwas und wechsele dann von meinem iPhone 6 zu einem iPhone 6s Plus.
