Decisions, decisions

I don't always make rational decisions. Sometimes I do what feels right. Today for instance it felt right to move from Chrome back to Safari and set the default search engine to DuckDuckGo.

Comments

Think it is a good one.

funny.. changed the default search engine to DuckDuckGo yesterday but am trying Firefox instead of Safari

Same here - changed to DuckDuckGo a couple of months ago and moved to Safari about 2 months ago. Couldn't stay with Safari as it was just too different to Chrome for me to keep using it - mainly the problem was when I downloaded things that an empty tab stayed behind which Chrome automatically closed for me :o) I know it's a small thing but I just couldn't keep on closing all those empty tabs. DuckDuckGo is great though :o)

next decision: whether or not to move away from gmail and if so, where? to apple's email service? any thoughts?

Axel Borschbach, 2015-06-23

iCloud Mail is unreliable, has weak spam protection and has a strange Push service. Example: it pushes new mail to every device you have, but only marks it as read on the device you are currently using.

IMHO Gmail has the best web interface and spam protection. Only downside: solely Google for Work customers get Exchange-Push.

Apple is not a good mail provider. Microsoft is.

Volker Weber, 2015-06-23

Thank you for your thoughts Valentin. I agree with you on gmail and i am more than happy with the service itself. It's more of a question whether I not I want to continue trusting Google with my emails...

Axel Borschbach, 2015-06-23

@Alex: I have moved to fastmail.com - it's a pay service but very reliable so far and I am loving it :o) Works everywhere for me so far (iOS, iMac, Web)

Ursus Schneider, 2015-06-23

Axel: valid point. But I think my data is in better hands at Google, because they have far better knowledge in web security than anyone else.

And I have no problem with them robotically scanning my email content to optimise their ad network. And if you have something really important to tell: use your phone or talk to a human :-)

Love DuckDuckGo. I've seen no real change in my search efficiency since I made the change months ago.

Mike McPoyle, 2015-06-23

My learnings from switching to DuckDuckGo now several months ago is:
Changing to DuckDuckGo for the reason to get "better" or "other" search results is the wrong reason. You have to get familiar with !bangs when using DuckDuckGo everything else is a pain in... (you know).
As soon as you start comparing results from Google, bing, baidu or Yandex with the ones from DuckDuckGo you are using it the wrong way. DuckDuckGo is about privacy (and do not track). And only for that, it is a better door to the world (wide web).

BTW, vowe, you could also change your small search box on vowe.net to DuckDuckGo: https://duckduckgo.com/search_box ;-)

Thomas Langel, 2015-06-23

I have been using duckduckgo as the default engine in my chrome browser since almost a year. about 50% of my searches are !bang searches wheras 25% !G when duck doesn't find what I am searching for.

Excellent idea, Thomas. Done that.
