very impressive. I guess that's an industry where it becomes very obvious that you simply can't just update your equipment in one step or a short period of time. Same in corporate IT by the way. Lot's of legacy systems which tend to live much longer than their creators ever anticipated... :-)

Und ich dachte immer, die elektrischen Anlagen in der (Ex-)DDR, die ich vor und nach der Wende hautnah zu sehen bekam, seien besonders bemerkenswerte museale Stücke ... da setzen die Amis ja noch einen drauf. Naja - ist halt noch viel zu tun für Donald T. oder wen auch immer ... :-)
New York Underground running on 1930's tech. Can't make up my mind whether that is impressive or scary. Probably both. At once.
If you work in industrial automation on power grid automation, this is not that surprising. Try to figure out when the nearest power plant to your house was built and what it cost at the time. Or the nearest sizeable industrial facility, e.g. a chemical factory or steel furnace or pipeline for oil or gas. Try to imagine how long it may take to generate a return on that investment. How often do you think there will be a renovation of the automation system just because enterprise of even consumer IT go through a new hype? Many of these systems need to be validated by rigorous processes, which take a lot of time.
Building these systems with COTS IT components, e.g. PCs and servers with commercial OSs, implies a necessary changes of operational paradigms as well. That takes a long time to send into the minds of all involved decision makers and staff. But it has to happen, the sooner the better
The subway is one of the things I love about living here. Endlessly interesting, absolutely integral in the fabric of the city.

Interesting vid - gives you an impression of the complexity behind the current Frankfurt signalling refurbishment that has forced RMV (the local operator) to close down a central 5 station segment of virtually all lines for 6 weeks for the installation and testing process.
