How Microsoft built, and is still building, Windows 10

Before their respective releases, Windows 7 went through two public previews while Windows 8 went through three. Both were quite the achievement at the time: After all, Microsoft was showing off its most important piece of software to the world before it was finished.
During the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft released 15 public preview builds of Windows 10 for PCs

that's really impressive, considering the size of the codebase.
Getting customer feedback early is such a no-brainer that it surprises me that Microsoft only started now. Surely Clippy (dare we mention Microsoft Bob?) should have been enough of a lesson.
