In 2011, Raquel Nelson was convicted of vehicular homicide following the death of her four-year-old son. Nelson, it’s crucial to note, was not driving. She didn’t even own a car. She and her three children were crossing a busy four-lane road from a bus stop to their apartment building in suburban Atlanta, Georgia.
Fascinating reading for somebody who walks everywhere.

I find it especially interesting how jaywalking is illegal in the USA. As far as I know, in Germany you only have to use crosswalks when you are within a certain distance to them.
I find streets in US awfully pedestrian unfriendly once you leave the city centers.

That's really shocking.
I was on holidays in Holland this summer, and I was surprised to hear that their perfect cycle path infrastructure is younger than I am, the situation in the late 1960s in Holland was as it is now in America. There were a number of high-profile child deaths because of car accidents, and they tried out changing the infrastructure in two cities, the Hague and Tilburg. Bicycle ownership shot up.
