Arlo adds geofencing and IFTTT support

My favorite security camera just got better. Arlo added a geofencing mode. When I got the camera, you could only arm or disarm it. That means the motion sensor was either on or off. And that is what triggers the camera. Then Arlo added scheduling. You could arm it at certain times of the day. But that still left you with a situation where you would either record your every move or leave the camera disarmed when you left the house.

Geofencing solves this problem for me. I told Arlo to arm the camera when I am not at home. And when I return home, I can set Arlo to the scheduled configuration so it will turn the camera on and off at certain times of the day. Now it's in full automatic for me.

Slightly related, Arlo has also added IFTTT support. When Arlo detects motion or audio, you can now trigger light switches. Or if a battery runs low, you can set yourself a reminder. You can also act on events. Arm or disarm the camera, or start a recording. This gives you many more options since you can use the Arlo motion sensor to trigger other actions or use other events to record video or arm/disarm the camera.

I just love it when a vendor improves his products that he already sold.

BTW this week Piper (https://getpiper.com/) updated their camera with IFTTT too. I prefer Piper because it supports, besides the motion sensor, smoke detectors, door sensors, humidity sensors over Z-Wave. And I can turn lights on and off with Z-Wave power adaptors when I am not at home. And with the integrated speaker I could talk anytime to my kids when I leave home, without them having to pick up the phone or dial my number. Within 20 seconds of any sensor going off I and my wife are very reliably informed simultaneously by phone call, SMS and mail of the fact. Just like Arlo all data is stored in the cloud so that stealing the camera does not cause loss of recordings.

Hmmmm...I've not used IFTTT before but now you've got me thinking. I think I prefer to leave Arlo on all the time cause I'm a scardy cat & I want recordings even if I'm home (there's woods & it's a bit remote where I live & I had a creepy guy at the door incident once). But the idea of triggering other things off of this is interesting. Thanks for the tips (once again)!

We know. You keep reminding us. ;-)

Hello,

Do you know if it's possible to have geofencing with two people (my wife and me for instance) ?
I would like to arm the camera only when nobody is at home.

Thanks,
Gaston
