How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds

by Volker Weber

When using technology, we often focus optimistically on all the things it does for us. But I want you to show you where it might do the opposite.

Where does technology exploit our minds’ weaknesses?

This is a very interesting piece to read. I had some major discoveries about my own behavior. It was very easy for me to break away from Facebook and I reclaimed a lot of personal time. And I understand now, how the Apple Watch keeps me from getting sucked in. I pick up my iPhone a lot less, because I don't get tricked so often.

Great Article. And it is so true. I also had no problem to abandon Facebook but still other things like Whatsapp, eMail and Spiegel Online got me on their hook. Thanks for sharing.

Since I don't have an Apple Watch: Don't you still get "interrupted" when receiving a message and watch it on your Apple Watch? Isn't this only another way of spending your time? Second question: How do you find great articles like this one?

Alper, on your second question: https://news.ycombinator.com

Thanks :-)

Alper, I do get interrupted, but only for a split second. I can immediately see if I need to pay further attention or not. Most of the time I do not and just move along with what I was doing.

How do I find great articles like this? I follow only few people on Twitter and they often have valuable content. This one was from my esteemed colleague @micspehr.

As I read this article my mind kept saying... Yes. Yes. Yes.

Point #1 is my key reason for loathing "Hamburger" menus.

Thank you, a great article.

Thanks for sharing! This article exactly describes what I realized about my Facebook using. I deleted the app some weeks ago. Interestingly it turned out the world is moving on even without myself checking Facebook every x minutes...

In the long run, spending time with people you love, doing work that matters, is all that counts.
