Internet is and always had been "of things" - marketeers seem to want us to believe this is something new. It is not. All it means is new "things" being connected. And either way, YMMV. 😀
Next thing you tell me is that there is no cloud, and it's just somebody else's computer, right?
The problem ist not the device being connected, the problem is that it's not working.
Just use the app and put these things in silent mode...

Hilarious, but I can tell you it is quite stressful. These are Nest Protect v1s. The same thing happened to me at 3.30am two nights on the trot. Wife was making more noise at me than the Protects. The only way to silence when they get like this is to take them apart and disconnect the internal battery. That is what I did, and this 'employee' seems to have failed to grasp the fundamentals of emergency situation management.
Complained voraciously = Nest replaced them all with Protect v2 and I've had no problems since.
Michael, you cannot silence a v1 protect with the app. Only v2 can do that because it works via bluetooth LE to ensure the user is nearby and the v1 does not support this.
Don't need a Nest for that - we had that a few months ago with "regular" smoke detectors - networked ones, yes, but not Bluetooth, Ethernet or anything like that, plain old proprietary radio. And nothing from the manual made them stop, only after perceived 30 minutes of terrible noise in the middle of the night they magically stopped by themselves. One of the kids didn't like that experience at all, the other slept through like there was nothing at all.
