HP pre-programmed failure date of unofficial/ non-HP ink cartridges :: Myce.com
by Volker Weber
Investigation of an online printer ink retailer shows that HP has programmed a date in its printer firmware on which unofficial non-HP cartridges would fail. Thousands of HP printers around the world started to show error messages on the same day, the 13th of September 2016.
Repeat after me: DRM is bad for the customer.

I bought a new (non HP) printer this past week when this happened to my HP printer. I replaced a couple of ink cartridges, but the printer kept complaining that they were damaged. I decided to buy a new printer rather than keep sinking money into ink cartridges hoping it would fix the problem.
DRM?! I don't see how HP is managing any rights here. Making a device owned by someone else non-operational on a fixed date with a fake error message requires criminal investigations, nothing else.
HP distributes a firmware several months ahead of the deadline date. That reminds me of other criminal software, crypto- trojans f.e.. It is disgusting seeing a big player trying to fool their customers that way. The only reason to act this way is hoping most people install the firmware. When the duedate arrives, no one thinks of that update.
Next printer will definitely be made by someone else.
