Buying an Apple Watch Series 2? A recommendation.
by Volker Weber
If you are considering buying an Apple Watch Series 2, I have a recommendation. After wearing the original Apple Watch for a year, I just switched to the new model. And with that switch I went from a Stainless Steel watch to what was previously an Apple Watch Sport. Apple no longer makes that distinction. It's just "Apple Watch".
The biggest difference that I noticed immediately is how much lighter the aluminium body is. You have to see this in numbers:
I am used to wearing 82g to 91g on the wrist, now it's only 46g. That makes a tremendous difference. And while "heavier" feels more expensive and more substantial, having a light watch is much better.
Good news: my recommendation is the cheapest Apple Watch you can get. Actually, not the cheapest. I would get a Series 2 and not the (updated) Series 1. It adds three features: brighter display, GPS, swim-proof (and swim exercise). To me the brighter display seals the deal.
Comments
Agreed. Got the new Series 2 last Friday (Aluminium body). Feels light - and the display is great!
Thanks for sharing your though process. I will do the exact same thing - waiting for the Nike version though...
One question regarding GPS: does it work with sports apps e.g. like Endomondo or Runtastic so you can leave your phone at home and it still keeps track of your route?
Yes, it does. And it is smart at doing so. When you have your phone with you, it will use your phone's location services to track you. When you leave it behind, it has a smart starting point of where you are. And then it uses its own GPS until it sees your phone again.
Thanks, Volker!
@Alexander
Can you feel a difference due to the faster processor? Is Siri reacting more reliable?
No, the difference between watchOS 2 and watchOS 3 is way bigger than between Watch and Watch Series 2. I haven't used Siri on the Watch at all.
The only thing I miss about my old (Titanium) Chronograph is the weight: 112g. It just felt much better than the Apple watch.
Any comment on losing the sapphire crystal when you go from stainless steel to aluminium?
Nope. I am comfortable with that.
