BlackBerry is now a software company

by Volker Weber

'Our new Mobility Solutions strategy is showing signs of momentum, including our first major device software licensing agreement with a telecom joint venture in Indonesia. Under this strategy, we are focusing on software development, including security and applications. The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital,' continued Chen.

Hmm. I am probably too straightforward to understand managerish, the message I get is this:

There will be new devices with BlackBerry logo on them in the future, only they will no longer have been developed by BlackBerry but by third-party vendors instead. Correct?

Probably nothing anybody can answer now, but anyway: does this mean the end to smartphones with physical keyboards, i.e. what BlackBerry is pretty unique at now?

I just bought two DTEK50. Should I worry about firmware support for the next 3 years?
