You may want to turn this off

I received two Live Photos today. And they should not have been Live Photos, because nothing was moving in the pictures. What is a Live Photo? It's a short movie that shows what happened right before you shot that frame. You see them when swiping through your photos.

Live photos are really nice when you take pictures of people, pets, or anything that moves quickly. But they come at a cost, besides taking up more storage. Since the camera has to record a live video stream it cannot play out its full potential in low light. Rule of thumb: don't shoot Live Photos at sunset or indoors.

I suggest you turn this feature off. And then turn it on consciously when you want it.

If it even was a video. It's not. Ist just a couple of Frames but far of the 25 you need for a video.

For me life pics are just not doing it. But that's just me.

Well, a video IS a couple of frames. You don't like the frame rate, I find it sufficient for its purpose.

If only there was a way to later chose the best shot out of these frames as it was possible on the Lumia.

Oliver Regelmann, 2016-12-02

You can. And it's actually easier than it was with Lumia. Use Burst Mode instead of Live Photos. For taking a continues burst of photos, hold down the shutter button on the screen or the volume up button. When you stop shooting it will hide all of these frames behind a single one. Select that frame and then "Select" to see all of the individual frames. Select your favorite(s) here and discard the rest. It's a very natural workflow that I use all the time.

Like Time Shift on Blackberry 10, works perfectly.

Jochen Kattoll, 2016-12-02

No, Time Shift is different. That is a technology BlackBerry licensed from Scalado for BB10, a company later acquired by Nokia. Time Shift lets you combine faces from different frames into one.

Volker Weber, 2016-12-02

That's one function but you can also choose the best shot of a sequence of frames. I use Time Shift a lot with my kids. When they for example jump into a pool you shoot the sequence and can later pic the one picture (or more frames) when they are most spectacularly flying in midair. Without that function you are often too early or too late and they are already under water :)

Jochen Kattoll, 2016-12-02

Ok. What I wanted to say is that Time Shift is more capable than just picking a single frame. Of course you can dumb it down.

I Agree with only turning live photo on when needed, it's one of my favorite features. If you do use live photos you should definitely have Motions Still from Google installed to export them to GIFs or Video Clips

(some of the motion stills capability is now rolling in to Google Photos)

I wish there was a way to easily find Live Photos again in the photo library. A smart album would be great.
