Pretty well summed up.
This explains why HTC is struggling for years: The HTC 10 was meant to be THE enthusiast device. Tops specs, great camera, almost stock android, unlockable bootloaders, external SD card, etc. But it didn't have Samsungs S7's waterproofing, Lenovo Z's modularity and so on. The M9 had the infamous Snapdragon 810, the M8 the underperforming ultrapixel cam. In the end they've only survived this long with myriads of cheap entry level devices for the masses.
Yet he leaves out one point: a successful device needs a strong ecosystem which depends on enthusiastic contributers like brilliant developers....
What do you think is different for Sonos or Raspberry Pi?
Both are products that are mostly carried by enthusiast customers.
