15,000 Steps Is the New 10,000

by Volker Weber

This research suggests that our current estimate of 10,000 steps per day may be too conservative, and that 15,000 steps is the mark we should be aiming for if we want to stave off life-threatening cardiac conditions.

When it comes to light exercise more is better. Everything helps. Doing 10,000 instead of 5,000 has a bigger effect that doing 15,000 instead of 10,000. On my 100 km a week routine I did 18,000 a day.

At least for me I can say that it is much easier to allocate 15-30 minutes in addition for more intensive sport/training than increasing step counts to new a arbitrary levels.

I agree with Volker - if you don't do anything 10k is better than 5k and 15k even more so. And Volker correctly states: it's light to training.

If you got yourself up from the sofa already doing 10k, add some more intense stuff and be healthier by doing so can also be your way.

I stopped reading the article at the word "BMI". BMI is in no way a good and precise measure for a serious study.

I seem to recall from the original RSA video "23 1/2 hours" that measured health benefit improvements taper off after 30 minutes per day. Are you talking about calories?
