Changes ahead for the iPhone

Apple hinges on the iPhone. It is their most important product. And if you go to their website, you will find they are currently selling five different models, not counting storage options: 7 and 7 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus, and the SE. Most rumors suggest that Apple will be releasing a 7S and a 7S Plus, alongside a new iPhone 8.

This makes no sense to me. The branding is becoming a mess.

I suggest that Apple gives up on the number scheme that we have become so accustomed to. The iPad leads the way out of this mess. The current iPad would be an iPad 7, if Apple had not introduced the Air and Air 2. Now it's just iPad. And for the iPad Pro, the bigger model did not even change the name when it was replaced this year.

I think going forward it will just be iPhone. Not iPhone 8 or iPhone 7S. And since the iPhone SE has started to go on sale I would expect Apple to drop the SE moniker as well. And while we are at it, why do we need the Plus name?

Once you just call it iPhone, Apple could make an iPhone Pro. Like the iPad and iPad Pro, there could be a cheaper iPhone and a significantly more expensive iPhone Pro. The iPhone could be available in two sizes, the iPhone Pro could start with one size. And Apple would have the opportunity to add more sizes throughout the year, freeing them from the strict September schedule.

It would get harder to distinguish the products. When buying from Apple that is not a problem but I noticed when I bought my Apple Watch on ebay that several auctions claimed to sell an Apple Watch Series 1 though the manufacturing date was before the release date of the Series 1.
For most private sellers this was probably by mistake, though.

Same with the Microsoft Surface in several generations. Depending on the online store you are not able to distinguish which years model you would buy.

Genau meine Gedanken. Wie immer wird man sich danach fragen, warum das nicht schon immer so (einfach) war.

Not sure about SE. Not only enterprises love the pricing change. Apple changed pricing sometimes on products that stayed...

And that would be rather well aligned with the naming schemes in the other product - Mac Pro vs. Mac mini, iMac vs. iMac Pro, MacBook vs. MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro.
