Scuttlebutt, A Decentralized Social Platform

A year ago I joined a group of programmers who are building a new type of social network, called Secure Scuttlebutt. It’s not a startup or even a nonprofit — it’s just open-source software that allows users to be in touch with their friends.
What makes Scuttlebutt unique is the simple idea that users should own and control all of their data. My Scuttlebutt account is not kept behind a login gate. It’s just stored locally on my computer, like any other file.

How are you going to get the masses to move with such a (in comparison to other established social networks) complex process to set up and get going?

Will have a look again if this restriction is no longer there: "Can I post from different devices? Currently, you cannot. Identities are tied to a single user on a single device. You could use scuttlebutt on multiple devices, but you would be maintaining multiple identities and feeds."
The last few weeks I have been thinking about how to replace Facebook with decentralized technologies. I already have a very broad plan on how to implement it...
Scuttlebut seems to do what most of what I have been thinking about - which is great, because it leave me to focus on other things (like music)

Das ist mir alles noch zu viel Gebastel. Und ohne Mobile für mich völlig nutzlos. Das ist weit davon entfernt irgendwann mal Facebook zu ersetzen. Ich krieg ja nicht mal meine engsten Kontakte dazu von WhatsApp auf Signal zu wechseln :-)
Ich sehe zwar auch noch nicht die große Scuttlebutt-Welle kommen, aber bei WhatsApp und Signal halte ich es für sehr einfach: Kontakte informiere, WhatsApp deinstallieren, Signal nutzen. Wer *will* kann mich erreichen. ;-)
@Clemens, naja, wenn man in der Verwandschaft Leute hat, die man mühsam an solche Dinge wie Chat-Apps hingeführt hat, muss man schon etwas sensibler umgehen :-) Und wenn sich dann noch diese Leute beschweren, dass auf ihrem Android-Handy Signal nicht signalisiert, wenn eine Nachricht angekommen ist, dann muss man sehr aufpassen, dass die nicht wieder sofort zurück wechseln ... Außerdem gibt es auch Leute die ICH erreichen will, und wenn die nicht wechseln, dann ist das mein Problem :-)
Ich bin mir übrigens völlig mit Euch einig, dass das noch nicht tauglich für Normal-Ottos ist. Aber es ist trotzdem durchaus interessant anzuschauen. Ich habe übrigens den Verdacht, dass das sehr schlecht skaliert. Da kommen schnell gewaltige Datenmengen zusammen, die dezentral rumkopiert werden.
@Michael: wenn du den Trick raus hast, wie man die WA-Jünger zu Signal locken kann, lass es uns wissen. "es ist so praktisch, alle sind da, wenn ich wechsle verliere ich den Kontakt"
Aber dass alles bei Facebook landet, interessiert kein Schwein. "Ich habe ja nichts zu verbergen, WA ist ja auch verschlüsselt etc pp"
