Apple fixes 2018 MacBook Pro performance issue

Last week a video appeared on the Web from David Lee showing how the new MacBook Pro would throttle down speeds when it got hot under processor loads. Apple told me that the issue Lee was experiencing has been identified and is being fixed today.

As you can imagine, when Apple heard about the problem, they contacted Lee and worked with him to isolate what could be causing the thermal throttling. After extensive testing, they did find the issue, and luckily it wasn’t a hardware issue, but rather a software bug in the firmware.

As I said, Apple isn't stupid. David Lee created the right combination of workloads for the bug to manifest itself. I can only imagine that somebody at Apple had a very bad week.

Well, lets wait and see what that software fix is ... could imagine that it comes down to cranking fans further up for that specific work load - an additional entry in the fan table is also a digital key. ;-)

I am sure there are lots of eyes on this issue. We will learn it quickly enough.

Indeed. This is a nice example and case study of several things. I am surprised, that it slipped through Apples QM in the first place. And I am surprised that they indeed worked with David Lee.

Hopefully it is fixed. Curious. But the 'all is well' headlines will not be as big as 'uh, the world ends'.

I’m not surprised such things can slip through. A modern CPU and Board, the combinatorics of what is possible must be crazy. Some problems will only manifest when enough units are in the field such that the improbable becomes observable.

Of course Apple cooperates with people having serious problems. Twice I worked with Apples second level support, they are very focused and straightforward.
