Prefab house in Sonoma

by Volker Weber

This would be my perfect house if I would live in a place like this. The architect/owner also heads store design at Apple. You have to watch the whole video to 'get' it.

Comments

Toll! Wobei es so was natürlich auch früher schon gab, siehe Mies oder Neutra ...

Great house, great video. I don't think I'm minimalistic enough to live in a house as stripped down to the essentials as that, but if you can do it, it's fantastic.

What about this : https://vipp.com/en/vipp-shelter

Torben Vendelev, 2018-09-24

Torben, I like the Vipp Shelter very much, but this house seems to "warmer". You also have to watch the whole video to understand the whole ensemble.

Volker Weber, 2018-09-24

@John don't worry, I'd guess even that family isn't that minimalistic to live only there.
If there is some truth in the comments "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj10evnclNA&lc=Ugyaszm60iRWIC_awst4AaABAg" it's their second house, their weekend hideaway.

Martin Funk, 2018-09-25

Of course it is. And man, those comments reek of jealousy.

Volker Weber, 2018-09-25

True! So what is the right way to address those contradictions, which this video is full of?

Martin Funk, 2018-09-25

Which contradictions do yo see? I see lots of those in the comments. People misunderstand the house as simple and inexpensive. It's not. It's a diamond.

Volker Weber, 2018-09-25

It is a diamond. Don't get me wrong, if it were up for airbnb I'd be willing to spend 3 or 4 hundred a night to experience it. Though looking at the prices in that area, that would not get one close to it.

The biggest contradiction I see is in the subtext of video, which I read like, basic, simple, minimalistic housing close and in sync with nature leads to sustainable living.

It shows how much effort was put into not harming the trees on the property, but what does the place look like were the 'ironwood' was cut of?

Of course it is great to have the house in the middle of the property and enjoy the fresh air coming up the hill, but where did all the exhaust go that the car produced getting you up there?

How much commuting time in the cars, there were at least three in the parking lot, needs to be invested every week to get there, vs the actual time spent there.

And yes it is nice to have a garden for fruits, vegetables and herbs, but I bet the gas that is burnt commuting there outweighs whatever one can get out of that garden multiple times.

Does the video mention the infrastructure and services needed to keep the house running. As water doesn't run uphill I'm curious on how the water get's into the water tanks?

Talking about water, yah the Ocean or a lake doesn't reach up there, so let's have a pool.
A pool in drought struck California? Seriously? How can that be sustainable living.

The only way I can imagine this to be sustainable is, that it is less unsustainable than the living of his neighbours. And looking at maps.google.com this house beats lots of the places in that area by far.

And again, don't get me wrong, I don't mind people living like that. Just don't invite a video team over, publish on youtube and expect to be praised for sustainable living.

Martin Funk, 2018-09-25

I think you do mind.

Volker Weber, 2018-09-25

Das ist aber ein schönes Stöckchen, das du da hinhältst. :-)

Martn Funk, 2018-09-25

This is california, of course the house is anything but cheap, of course the owner is full of it :)

Please note that Kirsten Dirksen (who produced this video) has a wonderful Youtube channel with hundreds of fantastic videos.
