HCL is steaming ahead

by Volker Weber

If you thought that HCL is just a development shop for IBM, think again. Watch this video of HCL Places running with Domino V10. HCL isn't waiting for IBM's ideas.

This is how the Notes client 1x should look

HCL Places is interesting but nothing new besides the IA, I think. It's certainly more attractive than the IBM Notes 10 client.

In terms of UI, I thought that all the energy put behind the #domino2025 or #dominoforever buzz would have translate in a refresh and 2018 UI for Notes, but no.

It still LOOKS like a 1995 product even if they fixed things under the hood.

Notes has bigger issues than looks.

What does a fresh looking UI look like? Isn't that a subjective call?

Wayne Sobers, 2018-10-12

A better look would definetely help (in my opinion).

It is a cool idea to build something new with Domino. The UI of Places does not impress me yet but I do like the UI of IBM Watson Workspace, probably because it is similiar to Slack.

If it is good, many Connections shops might get a headache or is this going to become Connections for SMB?

If this flies HCL would benefit from selling Places and improving the platform behind it. I do like this idea but what is IBM going to do, especially since they have an undelivered promise on "Pink"?

Connections is a much bigger problem than Domino. Where Domino has some apps that drive business outcomes, Connections often is a "feel good" project. It can often be replaced by a platform that integrates actual applications.

Volker Weber, 2018-10-12

I would have avoided saying "Domino V10" in the first 10 seconds. They did it say it again at the end which was ok as I had made it through the video and stay interested.

Bruce Elgort, 2018-10-12

I don't see the UI of Slack or Watson Workspace in the area of an application dashboard.
Slack and WW are similar worktools, an application dashboard with integrated apps etc is something completely different and can't use the same UI.

Nina Wittich, 2018-10-12

It is not the same UI, it is the elegance in both programs (Watson Workspace / Slack) that I do like a lot. Now this is a question of personal taste, so nothing wrong with disagreeing.

Just to be clear. I am absolutely positive about this.

Henning Heinz, 2018-10-12

HCL Places is very interesting. In my opinion they should had leave the Notes Client as is and invest their time in things such as Places. No visual connection with the heavy Notes Client.
We will see if HCL will not overtake IBM and deliver more attractive solutions based on Domino v1x.

Yes the looks.

My point is that for the majority of us that are no mechanics, when Audi, BMW or any other brand ship a new generation of their car, what's the one thing that will make us buy it?

Microsoft Exchange replaced IBM/Lotus NOT because of the backend, because the mail client looked sexier and easier to use. It sure was NOT better.

So when you do all those focus groups in many different countries, put all that rebranding stuff, twitter, bla, bla, bla, well, I expect something better than what I was presented by IBM/HCL last week.
