(Not) Losing Health Data When Upgrading a iPhone
by Volker Weber
Health data truth, as on Nov 2018.
✅ iCloud Sync, if toggled on
❌ iCloud Backup, never ever
❌ Unencrypted iTunes Backup, never ever
✅ Encrypted iTunes Backup, only if iCloud Sync is off

Argh. Sync ist und bleibt kompliziert. Aber bei Apple erwarte ich weiterhin:
“It just works”
(Danke für den Link!)
Without knowing much about health data regulation, the comment in the article of not getting into regulation of the HIPAA(Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) sounds plausible.
I was missing four days of Health data when moving to the new iPhone X in July.
Forcing Health data sync (via forced backup and forced restart) did only fix one day.
Switching off Health sync, restarting and switching on again showed another two days.
In the end I updated both the old and the new iPhone to the current iOS, retried the tricks above and voila, the last missing 22 hours magically appeared three days later.
As usual with Apple, if something does not work, its mostly a combination of bugs and not reading the manual.
Where do I "toggle on" iCloud Sync?
iPhone → Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Health
Ah, got it. That's too obvious.
So when I toggle it off and do an encrypted iTunes backup/restore, I should be on the save side, right?
