When you want to read and/or write encrypted mail, you normally need to have uploaded your notes.id into your HCL Notes mail database. Now, when the technique evolves, it’s no longer necessary to upload it manually. It’s even harder when you work natively from the IDVault, because your ID is loaded into memory.

I had worked many years with my notes.id manually uploaded into my mail database, and had to sync sometimes myself. This technique was not mature enough.

Thomas Hampel ( Director at HCL product management ) created code that will do the trick automatically without any interference from the user. But for some reason, i couldn’t get it up and running. My maildatabase couldn’t read encrypted mail without my uploaded notes.id.

Out of ideas, I contacted Thomas for help. Still thankful for your help 🙂

When you upload your notes.id, it’s saved in a profile called $shimmerid. Normally, this profile keeps your idfile synced with the IDVault. But when you started your Domino environment without IDVault, and now have enabled it, the theory is that your notes.id is out of sync with the one in the IDVault. Or even a interrupted (reversed) rename could do the trick for corrupting the sync.

We removed the entire profile $shimmerid, including my uploaded notes.id, from my maildatabase. I restarted my browser and tried to read an encrypted mail. Guess what…… it’s working! Domino re-created my $shimmerid profile and uploaded my id automatically. I can now read and write encrypted mail.
