IBM Business Analytics Helps Improve Customer Retention by Nearly 50 Percent at XO Communications
Adam Gartenberg

Here's a great example of the tangible benefits companies can see by applying analytics to their business.  XO Communications has reduced customer churn rates by nearly 50%, largely through the use of IBM's predictive analytics software.

According to independent analyst firm Nucleus Research, XO recorded an 376 percent ROI in just 5 months, an average annual benefit of $3,819,200 million. (You can download the full case study here.)

From the press release:
LAS VEGAS, N.V. - 25 Oct 2011: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that XO Communications, a leading nationwide provider of advanced broadband communications services and solutions, has reduced its customer churn rates by nearly 50 percent, largely through the use of IBM predictive analytics software. The software has helped save XO millions of dollars by uncovering deeper insights into customer behaviors, spotting trends, identifying those likely to defect, allowing proactive actions to keep their most valuable customers.

Recap: Insight 2014 Day 3 General Session
Thu, Oct 30th 2014 10:12a   Adam Gartenberg
I found the Day 3 general session of Insight 2014 to be quite interesting for a number of reasons. Captain Richard Phillip's first-hand account of his ordeal and rescue was fascinating, and Kevin Spacey's keynote was one of the more inspiring messages at a conference like this. On the business side, the challenges faced by Singapore in identifying illegal or dangerous activities in and around their ports was eye opening, and then of course there was the little matter of the landmark partners [read] Keywords: ibm notes community enterprise network twitter

IBM and Twitter partner on data analytics
Wed, Oct 29th 2014 7:12p   Adam Gartenberg
Today's general session from Insight 2014 was interesting for a number of reasons (including an inspiring talk by Kevin Spacey), but I want to draw attention to an announcement made right in the middle of it: IBM's partnership with Twitter to integrate all tweets (sinceTwitter's inception) and full ongoing live stream into IBM's cloud-based analytics, customer engagement platforms and consulting services. From the Wall Street Journal article on the partnership: IBM will have access to [read] Keywords: ibm applications consulting enterprise twitter

When it comes to analytics, are you a spectator or a front runner?
Tue, Oct 28th 2014 3:12p   Adam Gartenberg
Last week IBM's Institute for Business Value released their latest analytics study. The important takeaway this time around: The need for speed. In 2014, several significant shifts occurred in the realm of big data – shifts business executives cannot afford to ignore. The most significant change: Velocity is now the value driver for big data. Enter the speed advantage. Our sixth annual analytics study revealed a small group embracing this shift for competitive advantage. These orga [read] Keywords: ibm

Recap: Insight 2014 Day 2 General Session
Tue, Oct 28th 2014 1:12p   Adam Gartenberg
There were some great demos in today's Insight general session (and this technology is always better in live demos than pre-recorded ones, isn't it? I've included the rough time stamps should you want to fast forward the replay once available to just see the demos.) There was also a lot shared about how Watson technology is being applied to help oncologists, police investigators, and even chefs. (See the link below for a chance to become a beta tester for Chef Watson). We also heard first [read] Keywords: connections ibm notes application applications enterprise facebook integration mobile twitter websphere

How to follow IBM Insight from home
Mon, Oct 27th 2014 9:19a   Adam Gartenberg
I'll be following the IBM Insight conference from afar this year, and if you didn't make it out to Las Vegas yourself, there are still plenty of ways to stay in the loop. First, head on over to the InsightGO site and register to watch the general sessions and keynotes via live stream (starting up soon - 8:15am PT/11:15am ET today). I'm particularly interested in hearing what Kevin Spacey has to say about how data and analysis is influencing "House of Cards." You can also keep up to date vi [read] Keywords: ibm twitter

Introducing Watson Analytics: Analytics for Everyone
Tue, Sep 16th 2014 11:11a   Adam Gartenberg
When you've got a new solution being compared to the transformational power of the spreadsheet and the iPhone, you just might be on to something. From Steve Lohr in The New York Times: Developing technology is one thing; democratizing it is another. The latter involves finding the innovation that opens the door to widespread adoption with usefulness and usability. In the personal computer era, it was the spreadsheet that transformed a hobbyists’ plaything into a must-have machine in co [read] Keywords: collaboration ibm apple google iphone mobile oracle server
