You can see it and measure it - the savings are real

The following graph shows how split I/Os are basically eliminated during a backup of a defragged file. It also shows the overall massive reduction in backup times. and yes it happens on a SAN (I welcome any proof to the contrary).

SANs - They aren't magic
Thu, Nov 26th 2015 11:58p   Adam Osborne
Wes Morgan from IBM summed it up perfectly in his "Wrestling The Snake - Performance Tuning 101" Lotusphere Presentation from 2012. Last week one of our customer's asked if we could suspend overnight processing in The Preemptive Email Vault because their SAN was overloaded. On inspection of the issue we could see that over 50% of the I/O was due to file fragmentation. Luckily the answer is simple.

Big savings on backup times

Sometimes the best way to see the benefits of a change is to visualize it. Below is a chart showing the difference in backup times of a large mail file before and after it has been defragged. Look at the disk queue length and the overall backup duration. There is a significant difference. For a solution to this problem check out Defrag.NSF

Found OS/2 Warp 4 and booted it up
Mon, Nov 23rd 2015 5:29p   Adam Osborne
The clean up continues... found an old OS/2 Warp 4 disk. IBM did amazing things on very limited hardware. and Word Pro loads in like 0.002 seconds Hard to believe they did all this and zero came from it.
