The work from home dilemna
Wed, Oct 17th 2012 10:09a   Amy Hoerle
Over the past few weeks I have talked to a number of people about working from home. When the conversation starts it is interesting to hear the range of opinions on the matter. I've heard everything from "I'd LOVE to be able to work from home" to "I could never work at home every day". I'm guessing that most of us that do it or have done it fall somewhere in the middle. There are certainly advantages to being at home. Need an extra load of laundry done? Start a load during [read] Keywords: consulting office

Why a recommended minimum size of 1MB for DAOS on IBM i?
Thu, Jun 14th 2012 1:11p   Amy Hoerle
If you review the DAOS best practices you will find that IBM recommends a minimum file size of 1MB when implementing DAOS on IBM i. Why 1MB on IBM i and not on Windows, Linux, etc? What is the difference here? I have been asked these questions on a frequent basis so I thought, let’s talk about it! In this post you will find some of the reasons why this decision was made from someone who was working with the lab at the time the decision was made. My Journey into Domino 8.5.3 and Relational Database access from XPages - Now a .pdf
Thu, Nov 10th 2011 9:11a   Amy Hoerle
I was horrified this morning to realize that a large chunk out of the blog article I posted was missing. It sure looked fine last night! After trying 3-4 times today and each time having the server truncate the article in a different way I realized that I must be hitting some type of maximum with my previous blog post. Thus, for those of you who want to use the article to set things up on your servers I have created a .pdf file for you to download that is complete will all of the images. My Journey into Domino 8.5.3 and Relational Database access from XPages
Wed, Nov 9th 2011 9:09p   Amy Hoerle
As someone who has spent most of their career using the IBM i family of products where DB2 is built right into the operating system, running Domino on IBM i and pulling database out of DB2 is an obvious want and need. Hearing about the new way Domino 8.5.3 and the XPages Extension library can access DB2 data got me really excited. I wanted to know, could it really be this easy? Imagine all of the new apps that could build so quickly and easily? Enough dreaming, I must try it. What is success?
Thu, Oct 6th 2011 8:10a   Amy Hoerle
For most of my life I have equated professional success with getting a raise, promotion or more responsibility. I also have assumed that the more successful a person is the happier they are. But, is that really it? Does more money really = success + happiness? This week I was able to spend time with a number of old friends, customers and new friends at the COMMON user group conference. Observing and listening I couldn't help but see so many happy people. It also got me thinking. Do I r [read] Keywords: ibm consulting

A Basic Security Checklist
Fri, Aug 26th 2011 10:59a   Amy Hoerle
I just had the privilege of speaking at the MWLUG conference. This morning’s topic was Domino security. Security isn’t the most fun topic to discuss, but something that cannot be ignored. The last slides covered a simple security checklist. I am posting this here to share and I challenge you…Have you done these things on your server? Are you sure your server is secure? Enjoy! 1. A new XPages website
Tue, Aug 23rd 2011 2:59p   Amy Hoerle
A few months ago I decided to start learning XPages. I had read the hype and wanted my turn to give it a try. Taking off the "administration" hat and putting on the "developer" hat was a bit scary at times. However; it has been personally rewarding to try something new. While I have many more ideas and things I want to try - the basics of my project are done and can be seen at http://www.kimgreene.com. It is both terrifying and rewarding to have my work on display for the whole world to [read] Keywords: administration xpages

Learning XPages: Thank you XPages Community

For the past 12 years I have been completely immersed with Domino. However, most of that work was administration as my development work has been intermittent and mostly LotusScript agents focused on debugging an application problem or writing a solution for an administration problem. I have wanted to actually design and write a complete application for a long time, but the opportunity never presented itself. And let's just say that doing something just to say I've done it is not my st [read] Keywords: administration domino lotusscript xpages application community development

Reflections on Change
Thu, May 12th 2011 2:39p   Amy Hoerle
I don't know about you, but lately my life has been filled with "change".  In fact you could say it has dominated many conversations over the past few months as I have contemplated by future.  I have witnessed those who work extremely hard to ensure that nothing changes while others like myself seem get restless as soon as things have been the same too long.  But change can be good, right?  It can mean you are learning, growing, moving forward or taking a chance.  As for me, ending a 1 [read] Keywords: ibm

Education for Domino Administrators
Fri, Apr 29th 2011 7:47a   Amy Hoerle
Over the past 10+ years in the Lotus Support Center I've had the pleasure of working with many customers.  Some of the callers are highly skilled and experienced Domino administrators while others have had the Domino environment handed over to them overnight.  The challenge has always been how to properly educate all of those extremes.  In the support center we try to help by writing technotes to clarify or document new features.  We may also write documents to inform the user community a [read] Keywords: admin administration domino ibm id vault inotes ldd lotus sametime updall apple application community database security server wiki
