LS Speakers: Show your best face
Ben Langhinrichs

I know it is last minute, but due to a suggestion by Kathy Brown, I'd added a photo to the Person page. Anybody can get their photo in there, but if you want one that favors you, send it along to me via email at  and I'll add it.

Of course, if you don't send along a photo, I might be able to use one from Facebook or Google+ or Twitter if you have those and have given me an id. Or I might just grab one from the web:

Mind blowing echo of the last millennium
Fri, Aug 29th 2014 2:19p   Ben Langhinrichs
Tom Duff tweeted the following today. I had no idea, but it is exciting/scary/disturbing to think that my software has been running continuously in that application since Bill Clinton was in office, before hanging chads and 9/11 and so many things. 15 years. The sad thing is, Hard Copy Reporter was an abject failure in business terms. Technically, it worked well, but we were far out of our league selling reporting software. Of course, the Midas LSX itself is still selling well, but about many, m [read] Keywords: lsx application office

Every once in a while, I get a reminder about why it is worth spending the time to create your own Closed Captions for a video. My most recent, AutoCheck - Technique to verify LSX installation in database , is just a brief video showing a technique, so I didn't worry about it. But when I happened to check the Automatic captions created, I remembered why I should always take the time. See screenshot below. Ouch. If you are making videos to put on Youtube, you might want to watch my demo on how [read] Keywords: lsx database

In which I recover somewhat gracefully
Wed, Aug 27th 2014 8:03a   Ben Langhinrichs
In my previous post, In which I kick myself, I pointed out that the rather obvious but belated point that the Midas LSX sample databases should recognize whether Midas is installed and make that point rather than simply failing. That may be a simple realization, but it took a lot of work to fix in a reasonably elegant and comprehensive way. Fortunately, the code may be useful to others, especially those who have an LSX to install. One thing I don't show in the video is that the page with instr [read] Keywords: lsx archive database

In which I kick myself
Mon, Aug 25th 2014 1:43p   Ben Langhinrichs
I fancy myself to be fairly good at listening to customers and solving their problems. But that is not always a good thing. One of the hardest things to do when supporting users is to stop and really listen to both them and to yourself. It is relatively easy to simply answer the question or address the concern, basically to "fix" the problem. Honestly, it is very much the same experience men often have in relationships. How do you step away from identifying and trying to fix "the problem" a [read] Keywords: agent lsx database

What if we promoted software like Buzzfeed?
Thu, Aug 21st 2014 6:52a   Ben Langhinrichs
At Genii Software, we usually promote our products using simple videos or straightforward blog posts. But it occurred to me, what if we promoted software like Buzzfeed? So, let's see what it might look like. 6 Questions You Didn't Know To Ask About Genii Software's Products 1. How many Notes developers does it take to export your whole database to CSV using Midas? 2) What will your customer do if you send a printed catalog instead of an eBook he can read on his tablet? The very opposite of YAGNI - more like IYBITWCE
Wed, Aug 20th 2014 10:20a   Ben Langhinrichs
There is a philosophy called YAGNI that many software developers and programmers will recognize. The acronym stands for You Aren't Gonna Need It, and it has been popularized along with the ideas of extreme programming and continuous refactoring. It probably even helps a lot of developers and teams, but at Genii Software, we go the opposite direction. A good part of what we build is not currently necessary, is purely speculative or is sufficiently far ahead of what customers want that it could b [read] Keywords: domino lsx notes application archive development email iphone mobile outlook xml

Demo: Preventing data loss in IBM Notes-Domino email
Tue, Aug 19th 2014 9:40a   Ben Langhinrichs
The high fidelity email rendering provided by CoexLinks Fidelity 3.6 is often viewed as primarily about appearance, but it is also about preserving data integrity. This demo shows a number of examples where actual data loss occurs when certain elements are sent via email and rendered by either the IBM Notes 9.0.1 client or the IBM Domino 9.0.1 server. (None of these data losses started in 9.0.1 - earlier versions were even worse). Problems shown have all been reported by Genii Software customers [read] Keywords: domino ibm notes rich text email server

With open source - trust but verify
Fri, Aug 15th 2014 7:50a   Ben Langhinrichs
I was very interested to read Paul Withers' article, 10 Reasons All Companies Should Use Open Source. I agree with many of its points, but wanted to bring up one caveat that seems too often ignored. If I might throw some caution on his first point, 1. Good Developers Write Good Code, Great Developers Steal Good Code, it would be to remind people that great developers can steal bad code as well. As the Goto Fail vulnerabilty, and even more the Heartbleed Bug should remind us, the fact that cod [read] Keywords: apple archive bug planetlotus planetlotus.org security

Another story video available - Circle Back
Thu, Aug 14th 2014 11:56a   Ben Langhinrichs
I posted another of my story videos on my channel, TheStoryTimeChannel, for those who enjoy these things. This is called Circle Back, and while it has a kid as the main character, it is not a children's story. It took me a lot longer to get to this one (because of lots of releases of our Notes/Domino related products). I played more with the production of the video, adding some effects and trying some different ways of showing the text. Of course, the story is the main thing, and while this is [read] Keywords: domino notes

Would you like that windmill rare or well done?
Tue, Aug 5th 2014 7:10a   Ben Langhinrichs
If your company uses Notes/Domino for email, you have probably learned that in spite of years of customer complaints, emails sent from Notes are iffy at best. On a good day, all the information gets through. On a bad day, data is misformatted, missing or just plain messed up. But it is just for such concerns that we at Genii Software tilt at the windmills of email fidelity and data integrity. Now, since the release of CoexLinks Fidelity 3.6, more and more companies are getting their windmills s [read] Keywords: domino ibm inotes notes notes client rich text css email outlook server
