Notes Traveler - first impressions

Colleague Andrew Vina (alias) did a good job this weekend, a few hours after we finally received the download URL he installed a new server and put the Notes 8.0.1 Traveler software on-top.
A few hours later he started to send his usual SMS messages in pure triumph, and a few minutes later he realized that he might as well send them via Notes mail from his mobile device.

So - what's his first impressions?

1) It's quite simple to install and configure this software
2) And it really works !
3) The lack of symbian support makes it necessary for us europeans to maintain two different push-mail products, at least until Traveler supports Nokia & Sony Ericsson.
4) This version of Notes Traveler seems to lack more advanced features, like encryption and remote kill of lost/stolen devices.
5) Andrew is worried about the sync intervals, it seems that the mobile device might be polling the server at a fixed rate and therefore might cause you an astonishing telephone bill, but we don't know that for sure yet. (It does sound stupid, so we don't really think it's made that way)

Having said all that: Yepp, we both have a good feeling about this. It's not rocket science, and it certainly lack some of the more advanced features you find in for instance mSuite, but it seems to do the job. It's just to install a new 8.0.1 server (Windows), open the ports 80, 443 and 8642 in your firewall, and there you go.

More about this when we have tested it more thoroughly.

PS.
Remember to upgrade the design of your NAB til ver. 8.0.1. There's a few new Traveler specific settings there that you might need.

Exit Lotusphere
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:00a   Bjorn Thomassen
It is Friday evening at Dolphin. Most of the others left yesterday, but there is still a few yellow and black backpacks around. One intense week of yellow technology, networking, and partying is over. Our plane leaves tomorrow evening, hopefully we'll be back here next year, but frankly nobody knows. I always feel a bit depressed when Lotusphere is over, it's such a huge and important event and I sure could need one every third month or so. But before I pack my suitcase and start the 18-hour lon [read] Keywords: ibm lotus lotusphere notes apple blogger facebook interface linux mac microsoft mobile networking social software

LS2010 - day 4

A day with a very varied agenda.divStarted up early with "Meet the grumpies" - Bob Balaban and Paul Mooney with a somewhat special session about what makes us admins and developers grumpy. Catastrophic project plans, managers with no IT knowledge, or with too much knowledge, many irritating things in our business. The due date "February 14th, 2037" were for example proposed as a secret protest against all project owners and managers who request a due date but fails to give enough details around [read] Keywords: lotus notes sametime blogger

My back hurts, and the time difference makes my head a bit woozy, otherwise I'm fine. Left Bergen, Norway around 08:00 CET yesterday, and flew to Orlando via Oslo and Frankfurt. What is the real cost of an E-mail license?
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:00a   Bjorn Thomassen
A few weeks ago we did some pre-studies on TCO for MS Exchange 2007 vs. Lotus Notes 8.5.1. We only scratched the surface this time, but it really surprised me that MS Exchange license costs seemed to be a bit cheaper than Lotus.div divimg style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 157px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HM6e4aGKd2k/S0z2b-I-VkI/AAAAAAAAAug/O49xVc0slV8/s200/FortuneTeller.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425982611472143938" [read] Keywords: lotus notes blogger enterprise exchange exchange office outlook server

Looking at yellow betas
Tue, Nov 17th 2009 2:44p   Bjorn Thomassen
Just two weeks after the "IBM Software Day" we got an invitation to "IBM Beta Day" in Oslo. Didn't think that IBM did things like that, it was definitively a nice surprise. I cannot actually write about what I saw and tested, just that among other things we looked at the newly released Notes 8.5.1, an early beta of the next Quickr release, and some Sametime and Mashup stuff. Of course it would be nice to tell you more in detail about all this, especially since it's all exiting things, but I cho [read] Keywords: ibm mashup notes quickr sametime blogger microsoft
