It's not clear from the IBM ConnectED website, but I will indeed be presenting at ConnectED 2015 (the artist formerly known as Lotusphere). I'll be doing a panel with the very quiet Mat Newman, and the very tall Alan Lepofsky. Which is session BP101: @IF("Its Really Good";"It MUST Be Notes";"Must Be Something Else") 25 Notes on 25 Years of Notes! Cable cutting and access to foreign TV stations.
Mon, May 12th 2014 3:10p   Carl Tyler
Those of you with really good memories, may remember way back in April 2009 I cancelled my cable TV subscription. My savings have been used to buy various media players and subscriptions to online service. Honestly never had any regrets. A few months ago I purchased a Google Chromecast as it had such favourable reviews in the press. All I can say is these folks haven't tried the Roku or iPlayer for them to consider it such a great device. Personally I think it's terrible. I also d [read] Keywords: google network

The Domino Designer documentation team screwed us all
Fri, Apr 25th 2014 6:30p   Carl Tyler
They did us all a disservice by not preparing us for the future. They gave us too much useful information in the documentation. Pretty much every function in the old Domino Designer Documentation gave an example for every function or method, so if you weren't sure exactly how to use it, you'd look at the example and try it out and learn from it, you know, monkey see, monkey do, monkey learn. Those days appear to be gone in the new IBM products. I've been messing a great deal latel [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm

IBM SmartCloud Meetings aren't really that Smart.
Thu, Apr 10th 2014 11:50a   Carl Tyler
Went to an IBM SmartCloud Sametime meeting today, via a URL that goes direct to the meeting, decided check my plugins etc. before going into the meeting. I got presented with this dialog: The thing about this dialog is it is totally uneeded, the meeting ID was passed as part of the URL, read the URL with a bit of Javascript IBM and redirect to the correct page automatically. End users shouldn't be expected to figure this out, there's nothing "Smart" about this. Also don [read] Keywords: ibm sametime javascript mac

Since when has the OGS been about Press?
Tue, Feb 4th 2014 3:23p   Carl Tyler
I've seen this comment in a few blog posts recently, and I have to ask, since when has the OGS been about Press? People do realise that the press get 1 on 1 briefings at Connect, and they can be briefed throughout the year if they want to by making a simple phone call to IBM. How about the customers that paid money to be at the event, shouldn't the whole show be about them? Without customers, believe me, the press won't give you 2 minutes. Personally I think Connects issue is that [read] Keywords: ibm

So you've all looked at the calendar, you've picked out some sessions, but lets face it, you want to do some fun stuff. So here's the things I suggest: Great Geek Challenge, this is one of the most fun events, think pub quiz, organized by the wonderful nerd girls and emceed by myself and Paul Mooney. It fills up quickly and there is often a line as it's so much fun, so get there early, either with a team or without one if there's a seat you can take it. I'm kidding, but someone needs to bring him back down to earth. I've known Bruce for a number of years now as a friend, a customer, partner, advisor, and general good guy. Honestly, what can I say that hasn't already been said in all the other blogs? Use Sametime on your iOS device? Want to add some bling to your messages? No problem, just install Emoji as an additional keyboard and you can send messages that contain all sorts of coloured emoticons. If the person on the receiving end is using a Windows device, they'll see them as black and white Emoji (Windows doesn't have coloured fonts), Mac devices will see the full colour. So this is a pretty simple issue to see, and a simple issue to resolve, but you could easily take hours trying to figure it out. The IBM Sametime Proxy SDK ships with an example for embedding a Sametime chat window in a web page (Example 7), many of you (me included) may try this and find that indeed the chat is embedded, but as soon as the other user responds, it opens up a new chat window. Overall the feedback I have been hearing from people around Lotusphere 2012 has been very positive, they liked the OGS and felt very positive afterwards. I stole this puzzle from another website, I liked it and thought the people that typically read this blog would like it too. Here it is: A friend of mine has £100 in a bank account. Whenever he takes out money he records how much he has taken out and the balance. Here are his accounts for last week…. First let me say, fantastic work by the UKLUG organizers and crazy hard workers. They did a fantastic job again. Great location, great sponsors and great organization. If you wanted someone to organize a pissup in a Nunnery I'm sure these guys could do it This was the first time I gave this session, a few things were clear to me, first I had way more than an hours content, so I only showed about a quarter to half of what I really would have liked to. Tue, May 17th 2011 8:20a   Carl Tyler
Yep, that's the title of the session I will be presenting next week at UKLUG Not my usual Sametime session, and actually very little Sametime (if any). When I submitted my session I got my sums a little wrong, it should really be 23 years, and is basically a session of covering a kind of museum of Lotus products that I have come across in my years, with anecdotes of personal experiences that in my head are tied to these products. At Lotus there was a Dead Products society, that ea [read] Keywords: lotus sametime

Microsoft buys Skype, it's all about SIP trunks.
Tue, May 10th 2011 8:20a   Carl Tyler
I think Microsoft probably paid too much for Skype, but I don't believe Microsoft bought skype because of all the consumers using it. Microsoft bought Skype for their SIP Trunk network. SIP trunks are being used more and more by companies as they move to Unified Communications solutions, and for those that move to pure VoIP solutions, they need SIP trunks to connect them to other phone systems. Simplified Plug-in installs for Sametime and Notes with Embedded Sametime
Sun, May 1st 2011 6:50p   Carl Tyler
Lots of people have commented to me since Sametime 7.5 first came out that their end users find it too difficult to install plug-ins. Now installation of plug-ins can be managed by the administrators, and in Notes it's a little easier with the widget drag and drop install system (although it's still a pain as an admin to create these). In the past we've done some work for clients to dramatically improve the installation of plug-ins by wrapping them in traditional EXE installers, and [read] Keywords: admin notes sametime application widget

Sametime Proxy
Tue, Apr 19th 2011 9:08a   Carl Tyler
So recently I've been doing quite a bit of work with the Sametime Proxy, one of the new server components that shipped with Sametime 8.5. At a high level the Sametime Proxy offers an AJAX based Sametime Client for web browsers, and a web based client for the iPhone. I have to say, IBM did a really good job with the Sametime Proxy. Sure I hate that it's running on Websphere and you have to learn new stuff to manage that, and that IBM couldn't fix the shortcomings in Domino to allow I [read] Keywords: domino ibm sametime ajax community db2 dojo interface iphone javascript server websphere widgets

How to test specific Sametime client version connectivity - New free tool
Wed, Apr 13th 2011 6:30p   Carl Tyler
Back in IBM Lotus Sametime 3.1, IBM made it possible to restrict which client versions were able to connect to the Sametime. This came about because of a security exposure in early Sametime clients, but has proven useful since then for restricting full clients if you're only licensed to use Sametime Entry for example. The difficult thing for a Sametime administrator, is it's hard to test those parameters unless you install the different Sametime client versions, of which there are now [read] Keywords: ibm ldd lotus sametime facebook security vmware

A couple of weeks with the iPad 2 - First impressions

I've now had the iPad 2 for about 3 weeks, here are my first impressions. A lot has been written already about the device, so I'll try and avoid rehashing what others have said, and give it my spin. The physical dimensions - The iPad 2 has the same width and height as the earlier iPad, is much smaller in depth, just a bit thinner than the iPhone 4. How's that for an ASW heading then? I'm not proposing that IBM actually stops selling Domino or Notes, they should continue investing, I'm proposing that IBM create a Domino server with no mail components, no 1352 traffic to it apart from Designer and offer up a pure Domino Server with a new name. The most irritating thing about the IBM.com website
