Quick demo video of the Slingcatcher
Thu, Mar 18th 2010 4:50p   Carl Tyler
As many of you that read this blog know, I gave up my cable TV a few months back and a few years ago I also got a great device called the slingbox. This week I got a new companion to the slingbox, the slingcatcher. The Slingcatcher is purely a device for watching it is not a server, it is purely a client. Slingcatcher lets me pick a slingbox and watch on my regular TV, it comes with a remote. Using it I can quickly switch between a slingbox I have access to in the UK and a few slin [read] Keywords: application server

Domino team, please teach the Sametime team about backwards compatibility.
Fri, Mar 12th 2010 10:20a   Carl Tyler
One of the things that the eclipse client developers don't seem to take as seriously as the Domino server folks is backwards compatiblity. We're always finding little things that need tweaking in releases, now in the Sametime 8.5 we just found a big one. In Sametime 8.5 there is no longer the XULrunner component. XULrunner was the embedded browser that ran inside the Sametime client. So any plugin that was developed using that component of Sametime is now broken. Now here's the ch [read] Keywords: domino sametime eclipse server

Lotus Knows what happens when Domino and flying collide.
Thu, Mar 11th 2010 4:50p   Carl Tyler
As anyone that reads this blog probably knows by now, I enjoy my hobby of flying, and that I also own a plane. One of the things where my fellow owners are a little in the dark ages is the reservation system. Currently it's a paper based system, sitting at the airport, which imposes a number of limitations. * You can't check reservations outside of regular airport hours * You either have to visit the airfield or call someone to check on the status, make a booking etc. * You don' [read] Keywords: domino ibm inotes lotus notes ajax application database dhtml google iphone javascript openntf reservation

I got an email this morning from IBM (I think but not 100% sure, it's Greenhouse SPAM), promoting a new Sametime Training Webinar. The webinar looks great, but here's my gripe. Customers are trying to get their heads around Sametime 8.5 and the increased hardware requirements, installation, websphere environment etc. Surely it would have been smarter of IBM to offer this for free to existing and prospective customers? Notes 8.5 File, Import Adboe PDF for free!
Sat, Feb 20th 2010 10:50p   Carl Tyler
Back in December Peter Presnell posted a blog entry about Importing PDF files into Rich Text Fields in Notes. It explained how you could now import PDF files into Notes, if you renamed them to .DOC. At the time I thought, that is totally coole, but had no time to test it. I honestly thought it was so cool that it would have had a lot more hits on PlanetLotus and others would have talked about it, but they didn't. Today I decided to test it, and low and behold it worked. Then I [read] Keywords: notes rich text bleedyellow bleedyellow.com microsoft planetlotus

DOH! Homer Simpson Router configuration moment.
Thu, Feb 18th 2010 4:23p   Carl Tyler
For the last couple of weeks, I've been wondering why my upload speed was slow, I'm paying for 1Mb and I was getting around 300k. I plugged my PC into my backup DSL line and that was giving the advertised 768k, so how come the cable wasn't giving me 1Mb. The sleuthing began, after unplugging various routers, conecting to the modem directly and getting the correct speed I decided it was the router. Downloaded the latest firmware and checked it again, still 300k. Plugged in an old spare [read] Keywords:

Hello from Alton Bay!!! On Friday I said that this weekend was the Alton Bay Winter Festival and I was planning on flying myself, my Nephew and his friend there for a fly-in. Just like a Lotusphere presentation I decided to do a practise run on Saturday. So Saturday we started out heading south to Boston, where we hoped to do a scenic flight of the city, unfortunately the planes were leaving Logan directly over the city so that didn't work out. This weekend I will be flying myself, my visiting nephew and his friend to the Winter Festival at Alton Bay. Microsoft OCS awareness in Lotus Connections and Websphere Portal?
Tue, Feb 9th 2010 12:21p   Carl Tyler
I know, what kind of crazy company would have a heterogenous infrastructure with solutions from IBM and Microsoft? Well as anyone in the real world knows, most companies have something from both vendors in one way or another. Recently we were contacted by a company that wanted to show Microsoft OCS awareness in Lotus Connections and the option to show it in Websphere Portal. They had what appeared to be fairly reasonable requirements, the ability to have awareness in an iWidget and the [read] Keywords: connections ibm lotus ajax application community microsoft openntf websphere websphere portal

Forget the young people, where were the Indians?
Mon, Feb 8th 2010 9:20a   Carl Tyler
I was thinking over the weekend, with all the IT jobs supposedly moving to India, where were all the Indian Domino developers? There's definitely been a huge increase in the posts by Indians in the Notes and Sametime forums. So where are they learning their stuff? From the posts in the forums I think a lot of it is through the school of hard knocks, where their company has said yes we can do that, and then the poor developer gets told, hey go do this. Last night I settled down to watch a satirical English movie "In the Loop" about the British Prime Minister and the US president trying to find ways to launch a war in the Middle East (as if anything like that could happen), very funny by the way, but the language isn't suitable for children and people who like Glenn Beck may not find it funny. What's with calling switching customers the equivalent of idiots?
Fri, Feb 5th 2010 1:30p   Carl Tyler
I honestly don't get why people attack companies when they choose to switch from one vendor to another. If I was someone that chose to switch from Vendor A to Vendor B and the people involved with vendor A then basically called me and my colleagues idiots, I'd make a point of never ever considering Vendor A again. Perhaps instead of castigating the switching company, we should look at the reasons why they chose to switch, and work with Vendor A to take the steps necessary to stop oth [read] Keywords:

You were really excited, you downloaded Sametime 8.5, purchased additional hardware and installed it. But there are problems, it doesn't seem to work, how do you get a clue as to what's going on? IBM is obviously going to make some noise about Sametime 8.5 at Lotusphere, and for good reason it's been in development for years. Tue, Nov 10th 2009 9:59p   Carl Tyler
So there I was watching tonight's episode of James May (Top Gear fame) Top Toys on Meccano, and it ended with a preview of next weeks show, and who should I glimpse, but none other than my Brother and Dad. They and my nephew volunteered one Sunday to help put together track for next weeks episode where they attempt to make the worlds longest Scalextric track. Be sure to keep an eye out for them next week. [read] Keywords:

Two reasons to upgrade to Notes 8.5.1
Mon, Nov 9th 2009 3:39p   Carl Tyler
I upgraded my Notes client to 8.5.1 today. And here are the two reasons you should upgrade if you're on 8.5. 1. Double right mouse click works consistently in your mail. So now you can double right click when reading internet mails, or when looking at a view. This was broken in 8.5 2. Ctrl key now works when switching between views, keeping the selected document highlighted as you move between them. This was broken in 8.5 Ctrl End/Ctrl Home still doesn't work consistently betwe [read] Keywords: document notes notes client email java

I saw a few posts recently to forums and blogs of people saying that Sametime 8.0.2 had broken their Sametime Rich Text bots. This weekend I came across something similar with the Sametime 8.5 client Beta (Sametime 8.5 beta is on Lotus Greenhouse, so I'm not breaking NDA talking about it before anyone asks) I decided to start of by loading the stockbot sample code I posted a while back to the OpenNTF.org website. The day after my 40th birthday, I realized it had been exactly 21 years since I got my first email account. It was if I remember rightly Tylerc2@NossVM6. This was my IBM PROFS address and I was given it the day I started there. Yes I neglect to blog for a couple of weeks and mother nature wreaks her revenge and turns me 40, that will teach me! So let me come back with a review of Zombieland. I went to see this the other night, I was in the right frame of mind, ready to handle a stupid funny film, and I got exactly what I wanted. I took the sim card from the iphone and put it in my old Samsung Windows Mobile phone. Will Lockerbie release affect the US-UK ‘special relationship’?

This is a very popular question right now on the news websites and cable channels at the moment because of the dying Lockerbie bomber being returned to Libya. Here's the thing though, this isn't a political decision, this decision is made by the Justice not by the government, two separate entities. You know, they work independently of each other, one does not control the other. The government can certainly give their input, but the decision is not theirs.
