Nitix acquisition good for SMB and for the enterprise.
Carl Tyler

IBM today announced it has acquired Net Integration Technologies (Nitix).  Whilst this is very good news for the Domino SMB market, this is also fantastic news for the enterprise, why so I hear you ask?  Well Nitix has always had a good focus on making it easy to install the underlying OS and then by filling in a few fields installing the Domino server, especially on their appliances.  So why does this help enterprises? Well enterprises like the idea of really easy to install software too, they also like the idea of appliances that they can easily ship and configure of to remote locations. They also like the idea of a single installer along the lines of Windows Server, where you install the OS and you also get web server, firewall, ftp etc. already running, imagine an installer that installs Linux and configures Domino all in one go.

One thing I hope will come from this, a simple easy to install VMWare image for Partners so they can easily demo an integrated solution, you know type in a few fields and you have a Domino/Sametime/Quickr server running in VMWare on Linux, no pesky windows license, so IBM  can distribute it with only having to worry about their own licenses.  But also not only partners, this enables IBM to build a leave behind DVD with a pre-configured environment that customers can try out with VMPlayer (Microsoft does this today with preconfigured demo servers that run in Virtual PC, but MS doesn't have to worry about or pay the Windows license).

World Cup Blog
Thu, Jun 10th 2010 11:10a   Carl Tyler
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've setup a new blog and twitter account to post World Cup events during our travels in South Africa. The blog is http://www.vvorldcup.com and the twitter account is vvorldcup I've had the vvorldcup domain for a long time, and yes it is two Vs not a W, pretty sure FIFA would sue for worldcup.com The blogging will be done by myself and my two fellow travellers, Chris Miller and Andy Higgins. Interestingly enough we all have a very strong ba [read] Keywords: blogging instant messaging twitter

Apple FaceTime, what's cool and what isn't
Wed, Jun 9th 2010 12:01a   Carl Tyler
And you thought this blog had become a World Cup blog, ha, you couldn't be further from the truth, I actually just turned on www.vvorldcup.com for that (and yes that is two V's not a W) anyway back to the purpose of this blog. So in the past I blogged a little bit about my Nokia N800, it was my device looking for a problem, kind of how I view an iPad for myself today if I was to get one. One of the features the N800 had was a camera that could swivel around so you could use it to vi [read] Keywords: apple iphone mobile skype

Three days to go!
Tue, Jun 8th 2010 3:00p   Carl Tyler
It's three days until the World Cup kicks off, which means you have three days left to get your WorldCup-Pool entries in, it closes midnight June 10th. On Saturday is one of the biggest games, USA vs England. If you're in New Hampshire Saturday afternoon, please feel free to come by my USA vs England party, I admit the flags etc. may be a little biased towards England, what can I say? That's who I want to win. [read] Keywords:

I won the Twilio developers contest
Thu, Jun 3rd 2010 11:20p   Carl Tyler
I found out this morning I won the Twilio Developers contest with the Flying Club Booking System I built for the club. I found it interesting that in the write up I wrote for them, they removed my references to Domino and how it made it easy for me to build it, hhhmm, they also didn't publish my picture which they asked for. Oh my God, it is like that old joke, "Should I tell my parents I still use Notes or I'm dating Carl?" Still not to bad for a few weekends work from someon [read] Keywords: domino notes system i

According to crowd sourcing Brazil will win the World Cup.
Tue, May 25th 2010 3:10p   Carl Tyler
Well I'm not really sure it's a crowd yet, but based on the 18 paid entries received so far in my World Cup Pool site, the highest picked team for winner of the WorldCup is Brazil, followed by England and Spain, with Portugal and Argentina picking up the rear. England picks we can pretty much consider patriotic English folks like myself picking their home country, but Brazil and Spain haven't been picked by Brazilians and Spanish folks so I consider those selections a little more based o [read] Keywords:

It's nice when something works the way it's supposed to.
Tue, May 18th 2010 8:30p   Carl Tyler
I've had a few blog posts recently that have bitched a bit about Sametime, and to be honest I think with good reason, lately I have wondered what kind of QA process IBM has been putting Sametime releases through, do they have one? So I was pleasantly surprised the other day when I setup something for a customer and low and behold, it worked first time, and as advertised (rare days in the recent release of Sametime). The feature in question, Sametime awareness within Microsoft Sharepoint [read] Keywords: domino ibm notes sametime integration javascript microsoft office outlook server sharepoint websphere

Plantronics and IBM Offer Tools for Businesses to Collaborate and Work Smarter
Tue, May 18th 2010 6:50p   Carl Tyler
Today I was happy to see my quote in the Plantronics press release endorsing their products working with IBM Lotus Sametime. Epilio uses IBM Lotus Sametime to increase the effectiveness of its virtual workforce by integrating voice, data and video communications on the PC. "As an organization with no single physical office location, we rely heavily on our Unified Communications infrastructure to provide customers with the high level of expertise and responsiveness they expect. Airlines and their weird mathmatics..OneWay vs return
Fri, May 14th 2010 11:50a   Carl Tyler
So I'm sorting out my Boston - London Leg for my World Cup trip, and I have an unused airmiles ticket and an unused BOS-LHR ticket from last year, so I thought, well why not get the return leg on Airmiles and on the outgoing leg use the $ from the unused flight, the return ticket I'd looked at was ~$1200 so I thought, a single must be about 1/2 - 2/3 that cost. Check out the price difference... Return Price One Way Price What kind of crazy mathmatics is that? I'll ju [read] Keywords:
