IBM Notes and Domino 9 launches public beta
Chris Miller

IBM raced ahead of schedule to release IBM Notes and Domino 9 into public beta as of today. With the public beta everyone can get their hands on what is to become the must have client and server compared to every previous release. (We always say that though). Lok for some of the following features:
Activity streams: allow you to view and take action quickly on content and events
  • Embedded Experiences: allow you to access business critical actions from other applications without leaving your email. This brings collaboration in-context and results in tighter integration across iNotes, Connections, Notes, app dev (XPages), and 3rd-party products and services
  • Contemporary user interface, simpler navigation, easier to locate information both in Notes and iNotes
  • IBM Notes Browser Plug-in: allows rapid delivery of IBM Notes Social Edition applications to the web
  • Incorporation of a social application container, based on the OpenSocial standard, which provides for development of a reusable set of “gadgets” from both IBM and third parties
Lotus Traveler will also get some added support for BlackBerry BES 10, Windows phone 8 and iSeries.

I have already downloaded the server from the public site and client installs and everything installed easily and is running smoothly. I have plenty of commentary to come on different areas as we go along and I think they should be posts for each one.

The server code is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit for Windows, Linux and AIX. There is also iSeries. Lotus Traveler for Linux, Windows and iSeries is also there.

I would get the test servers and clients ready to see what IBM will talk about at IBM Connect 2013 and Lotusphere.

What is the PODDLE vulnerability - back to basics
Thu, Oct 23rd 2014 9:00a   Chris Miller
As we fight to fix the POODLE vulnerability in all systems, we should know what it is. POODLE stands for Padding Oracle on Downgraded Legacy Encryption . In simpler terms it exploits an older form of encryption your browser may use to communicate with servers. As long as both the server and the client (web browser) support SSL 3.0, the attacker can force a downgrade in the protocol, so even if your browser tries to use TLS, it ends up being forced to use SSL instead. The only answer is for eith [read] Keywords: connections firefox google oracle security server

CliMate Environment Tracker by Rooti review
Mon, Oct 20th 2014 9:52a   Chris Miller
CliMate, by Rooti, is your personal environment tracking device. It syncs via bluetooth and provides information on temperature, humidity, UV indexes and more. It can be worn and attached to bags and clothes via a flexible lanyard or mounted on the included stand. In the free application, a plant symbolizes you in relation to your surrounding climate. When you're protected, the plant flourishes. When you're exposed, it withers away. The app parses all your data into daily, weekly and monthl [read] Keywords: application archive mobile

Skype 6.21.104 is consuming way too much memory
Thu, Oct 16th 2014 10:12a   Chris Miller
I am an avid user of Skype and have let it update itself pretty regularly. Even automatically. However the Skype 6.21.104 update this week is consuming tons of machine memory. And it continued to grow So I uninstalled Skype 6.21.104 to go back to an older version. My choice was the last Skype 5 version I could find of 5.10.0.116 and ran into a new issue Since yesterday, all versions of Skype below Skype 6.13 for Windows and Skype 6.14 for OS X are blocked and do not allow you to sign i [read] Keywords: skype

What is the IBM Bridge to Cloud program?
Wed, Oct 15th 2014 9:49a   Chris Miller
IBM launched the Bridge to Cloud program to help users move easier into their IBM Connections (formerly SmartCLoud) Cloud offerings. The goal is to keep entitlements in place and move to subscriptions. "Bridge to Cloud" allows a customer to switch from on-premises Notes CALs to SmartCloud (now Connections Cloud) Notes subscriptions at renewal time, keeping the same entitlements whether they stay on-prem or move to IBM Connections Cloud Domino server licensing remains as-in (customers trans [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm lotus notes email server

The IBM Desktop Utility for Lotus Notes Clients
Thu, Oct 2nd 2014 12:50p   Chris Miller
Do you still use or have users with the Lotus Notes Workspace? Then the IBM Desktop Utility for Lotus Notes is a cool tool. The DSKTOOL.EXE Utility essentially remediates the user's desktop icons in a recertification exercise. What that means is that you can use the tool to rename the server that an icon points to with a simple script text file. It is currently supported up to version 8.5.x for Notes Builds 194 and earlier. Read the rest of the SocialBizUG article I wrote right here. Rebranding IBM SmartCloud offerings name to IBM Connections family
Wed, Sep 24th 2014 8:17a   Chris Miller
IBM has announced the rebranding of IBM SmartCloud to IBM Connections. As you can see in the chart below, IBM Connections is now a platform and not a product. We were first told of this at IBM Connect 2014. Here is a quick chart with the new names plus more news. These changes will be implemented on or after September 20. No customer actions or changes will be required, and no URLs will change. There will be a dual entitlement option to help you move to the IBM Connections cloud for your [read] Keywords: connections ibm email

Wink Connected Home Hub (PWHUB-WH01) review
Wed, Sep 17th 2014 9:59a   Chris Miller
The simplicity of the Wink Connected Home Hub makes this a bit confusing to some. The Wink Hub is only the hub and a power cable. During configuration you connect it to your wifi (which should have Internet access) and then use the mobile app on iOS or Android to finish the configuration. The easy steps are as follows (which we cover in the video) - Plug in the wink Hub - Load the iOS or Android app - Connect to the Wink Hub and begin configuration - Add supported devices by simply scann [read] Keywords: application archive mobile network wifi
