What? New Companion and To Do Apps? YES.
Fri, May 9th 2014 2:25p   Chris Reckling
I told you more apps were coming, updated for iOS 7! Today IBM released Traveler Companion and Traveler To Do's to the Apple app store. These were updated to align with new guidelines for iOS 7 (featuring a beautiful new design) and a handful of bug fixes, as reported by customers. Traveler Companion is available so you can read and send encrypted mail on the device (since we cannot build this into the Apple mail client). Sametime Meetings app for iOS Updated
Mon, Apr 21st 2014 3:25p   Chris Reckling
Today IBM released an update to the Sametime Meetings app. This release updates the UI to be more in line with iOS 7 guidelines. Check it out. When we started this process, we decided to go for a lighter, friendlier tone than before. Here is what the main entrance screen looks like now - what we call the 'lobby'. From here you can launch straight into your meeting room. And once you are in a room, you can focus on the content at hand for the meeting. Orlando, FL, also known as Lake Buena Vista, or on my phone location as Bay Lake...Wednesday morning, January 29. It's hump day at IBM Connect - that means the Wednesday night party happened on Tuesday this year at the Hollywood Studios. Everything is turned around! It's been great meeting customers and friends from over the years both in the hallways and in our Design Studio on site in Asia 4. IBM Connect is just around the corner - yikes! Once again, the user experience and info management teams will have a lab in Asia 4, to the left of the elevators to the partner showcase - also known as, 'the same place as the previous years'. IBM Design Thinking is a big emphasis for us this year and indeed, across all of IBM. We will have a number of activities in the studio for you to participate in, as well as the usual one on one feedback sessions we typically do. Getting a jump on things, last Friday the Sametime Chat app for Android was updated for Sametime 9. The new apps add audio and video chats so now you can easily move from text chatting to a richer communication mode. Congratulations to Tyler (our designer) and the dev team for getting this out to the market. Here are a couple of screenshots of the app for tablets and phones. November 5. Today IBM released updates to the Connections app for Apple iOS and Google Android. This update primarily adds support for Connections Content Manager, an alternate file database available in communities. The other features worth noting are an indicator for when the device loses the network connection and support for Mobile Iron on iOS. Exciting news! You can now access IBM Docs on your iPad from within the Connections app. You can create and edit documents and view spreadsheets or presentations created with IBM Docs on the desktop. All of the files stay within the Connections app on the device, which removes the worry about information being sent to other apps and potentially to an insecure place. Sametime Meetings is an excellent client! You should try it. It works on Greenhouse, SmartCloud (4-digit meeting ids), and your own on premises install of Sametime. One problem we seek to solve for end users is that pesky server setup and configuration step - you know, the first step you have to do in most cases (although you can join SmartCloud meetings anonymously if allowed). The end of the year brings much cheer to the app store, with a new release of Sametime Meetings and now Traveler To Do apps on the Apple App Store and for Android as part of the Traveler Upgrade Pack 2. On site, we started on Thursday setting up our private network and making servers happy so we could practice the demos. Things are coming along quite nicely and we even had some time to put in a couple of amusing (at least to us) parts. N [read] Keywords: ldd lotus lotusphere network server vista

What’s Happening in the UX Lab?
Tue, Jan 10th 2012 11:03a   Chris Reckling
The UX Lab is a great way to contribute to our product design efforts as well as experience various prototypes and 'in progress' work. We'd love to hear from you and this year it is a bit different from the past few Lotuspheres. Instead of scheduling half hour blocks of time to meet with someone, we're adopting a 'drop-in' model. That means you can come any time and stay for 5 min or 1/2 hour or any time in between. Tyler and I will be manning the Mobile station. Mobile UX 2011 in Review
Fri, Jan 6th 2012 11:22a   Chris Reckling
Usually I don't write these "year in review" posts, maybe because I'm always looking ahead to the next project, the next challenge. However, it is useful to look back and reflect on the past accomplishments that we all worked so hard to get done. I believe 2011 was one of the more eventful years for me, primarily because of the nature of the mobile marketplace and how fast you need to move - that means a lot of releases in a short amount of time. At Lotusphere 2011, we said that we would [read] Keywords: connections ibm ldd lotus lotusphere notes odf sametime symphony traveler blackberry development mobile

Post Holiday Device - What’s you plan?
Fri, Dec 9th 2011 8:23a   Chris Reckling
This year, I'm guessing there will be a lot of tablets under the tree/bush. And there are a lot of options - just stop into your favorite electronics store to see the variety. Of course, there is the iPad...then about 400 other Android devices, in all price ranges. The Android tablets also come in many different sizes - I saw a display for Samsung that had 4, 5, 7, 8.9, and 10.1 inch options - and prices. In addition, for Android, some are running version 2.x and some are on 3.x. Sametime 8.5.2 Mobile Apps
Wed, Dec 7th 2011 11:02a   Chris Reckling
As many of you already know, IBM released new Sametime Chat apps for iOS and Android. Congratulations to the team, including designers Tyler Walters and Carrie Tracey. For Android, we did some visual design updates to bring it more in line with the direction that Traveler and Connections are moving in. We're going for a consistent brand experience across the apps and device types, while providing tight integration with the platforms on which the apps run. IBM Connections iPad app Available
Mon, Oct 31st 2011 9:24a   Chris Reckling
When we released the Connections apps for iOS, Blackberry, and Android this summer, we held back on releasing an iPad specific app. As lead designer, Marty Moore, has pointed out on his blog, trying to make a phone app expand to fit the larger screen just doesn't work very well. So, we took the time to make an iPad specific UI. An update is available in the Apple app store today. Congratulations to Marty and the dev and PM teams! LotusLive Meetings Apps Available
Tue, Oct 25th 2011 9:03a   Chris Reckling
As previously noted, the apps for iOS, Android, and Blackberry are available in their respective markets. They should be very straightforward to use - enter in your profile info, the meeting ID and you're in. In addition to the basic viewing of slides, on iOS and Android you can also view an appshare. In our internal testing, the appshare on the device kept pace with the desktop Mac I was viewing. Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.3 Details
Tue, Oct 4th 2011 6:23a   Chris Reckling
This year in UX, right after Lotusphere, we consolidated a lot of different design efforts on mobile into a single UX team, which I lead. So far, we've done some amazing work and the designs are starting to permeate into other parts of the collaboration portfolio. We already shipped Connections apps to the app stores for Blackberry, Android, and iOS. More to come on that front later...along with Sametime client updates. This week, we release an update to Notes Traveler 8.5.3!! LotusLive Meetings in the Android Marketplace
Fri, Sep 30th 2011 11:03a   Chris Reckling
We've been busy in mobile-land this year and you've already seen some of the results - in July IBM Connections apps were released to the Apple appstore, Android Marketplace, and Blackberry App World. Tyler Walters led the design effort with help from Michelle Cooper doing some user testing and providing quick feedback. Yesterday, we posted the LotusLive Meetings app for Android devices. We are currently hosting an unassisted usability activity where you perform 15 mail and calendar tasks and tell us how easy they are and if they are important to you. "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.” - Seneca As an earthquake rumbled up the east coast of the USA from Virginia to Boston, word spread that Mary Beth Raven, UX Designer for IBM Lotus, was taking on a new challenge with another company. Read her announcement here, if you missed it. I think she was too modest in her assessment of the impact she has had, so I thought I would gather a few memories together myself. Fri, May 13th 2011 4:22p   Chris Reckling
One of our missions this year is to expand our methods for gathering feedback on our products as we are in the early design stages (or even when we're in the middle of it!). To that end, the UX user research team set up a community on Lotus Greenhouse to help us reach out, called the Online UX Lab. We began this process by hosting a short-lived forum to gather feedback on Notes Traveler (our mobile client for Android). Mobile Design Principles

During Lotusphere 2011, Andy Schirmer on my team, did a presentation, AD504, Best Practices for Mobile User Experience Design. Jessica Peter, now on my mobile UX team, helped put it together. This presentation was a result of their work in 2010 on formulating a user experience strategy for mobile, much like we had done for the desktop, using One UI. IBM Project Vulcan at Lotusphere
Mon, Jan 24th 2011 6:02a   Chris Reckling
As you probably know, last year at Lotusphere 2010 IBM introduced a vision for the future of collaboration, called IBM Project Vulcan. I led the team that put that demo together, and it really was a team effort across the organization, to express in visuals (and code) what we see as a new way to work - what is now called "social business". We talked about 4 principles guiding us: Continuity, Convergence, Opportunities, and Innovation. I'm not going to recap all of that. Press release here. Get that iPad Look in the Notes client
Tue, Jan 4th 2011 8:23a   Chris Reckling
I recently got an ipad at home and have been using the mail client to get my yahoo, gmail, and Notes mail there. It's a pretty simple app, of course, and got me to thinking: Why am I wasting all that space with a left navigator? I use it maybe once a year to go to "all documents" or Sent to look for something. I don't put anything in folders, either. So, I made the navigator smaller, did a "Preview on the side" and narrowed the view so it was "just right". The result. Now, I' [read] Keywords: ldd lotus lotusnotes notes notes client

Last week I had the pleasure of providing a keynote address to the Netherlands Lotus User Group in Amsterdam. The venue was the Ajax ArenA football stadium and the opening was actually on the field! I spent days trying to boil down what I needed to say into the allotted time. Future of Workplace Communication with Alistair Rennie
Fri, Aug 13th 2010 6:13p   Chris Reckling
Alistair Rennie participated in a panel discussion this week in Australia. This was a very interesting discussion that I highly recommend. It hits on many of the essential questions we grapple with today. "Email is dead, but can anything take its place?" And thus opens the discussion. It's worth a listen and brings up some interesting points quite relevant to Project Vulcan and the future of collaboration w [read] Keywords: collaboration ldd lotus email twitter
