How Google Killed Old Yeller!
Thu, Jun 18th 2009 8:59a   Chris Whisonant
As many of you may know, we have had a problem with Dogear here for a while. At one point, I started referring to it as Old Yeller (could not resist the dead dog/yellow reference - sorry). After doing a lot of upgrades (to IHS/WAS/Connections), DB troubleshooting, completely deleting the DB (which has since been restored), enabling advanced Windows logging (which did not help much), even moving to a fresh VM with a clean install of WAS, maintenance, etc..., nothing seemed to work. A Note for BleedYellow Bloggers
Wed, Jun 10th 2009 3:54p   Chris Whisonant
To all of our wonderful bloggers here, you are probably aware of the issues we have been working through with Dogear. This has the potential to make your blog appear unresponsive when Dogear hangs before automagically restarting itself. Before it would just die, now it restarts. If you have the "Dogear Bookmarks" available in your blog template, then this is what causes your blog to take a while to load sometimes. If this gets too irritating for you, you can modify your template to simply disabl [read] Keywords: dogear template bleedyellow integration

DAOS Confusion!
Fri, Jun 5th 2009 2:14p   Chris Whisonant
Or: Can I DAOSify a Server With < 8.5 Clients? Recently I have had some colleagues and clients asking about updating a Domino Server to 8.5 and turning on DAOS while still running a mix of 6 and 7 Notes Clients. There is some confusion related to some upgrade seminars that are happening that appear to be using this slideshow. Here is slide 18 that is causing some confusion: The last bullet is causing confusion. Of course "Domino 6 and 7 clients will not recognize DAOS" - even the 8.0.x cli [read] Keywords: domino notes ntf template bes bleedyellow bleedyellow.com database server

In response to: FTOTM (first Tuesday of the month) = new rulesI never knew that you could actually disable xPages on the server completely. This is rather interesting. What's funnier is that the notes.ini that's used to do this is INOTESDISABLEXPAGECMD - iNotes and xPages are not even tied together at this point. Update On Dogear
Tue, May 12th 2009 8:40a   Chris Whisonant
As many of you know, we have been having some issues with Dogear here and working with IBM. As we have upgraded, moved, and tried all kinds of different things, it appears to have been pointing to the database as the culprit. For now, I have created a new Dogear db to see if this is the problem. I have a full backup of the db from last night, and if it turns out that the DB was not the problem, then I will restore that backup. Sorry for the inconvenience - we have tried a lot of things for many [read] Keywords: dogear ibm database

When IBM Meets Star Trek
Tue, May 12th 2009 6:15a   Chris Whisonant
Just thought I would remind everyone out there about the webadmin logo that IBM has been using over the years. Funny how close the 7.0 Beta 4 was to the actual Star Trek logo with the starship in the center. It was changed for the 7.0 GOLD release. So, I wonder what IBM is trying to say about administrators?? Updated DAOS Estimator

On April 16, 2009, IBM released version 1.4 of the DAOS estimator. I like some of the new options. They are: -i option allows the estimator to run on an indirect file which contains a list of databases to run against. -c options causes the estimator to write attachment data to a CSV file for later processing. Prior to Domino 8.5, if you wanted to enforce custom notes.ini settings or location preferences you would have to modify the design of the Desktop Policy settings form to include $Pref or $LocAll fields, respectively. Bailing Out Local Governments?

So there are now many big cities seeking bailouts from the federal government. Atlanta is one of these cities - right down the road from me. Yesterday, in his Nuze, Neal Boortz outlined a plan for how Atlanta should make some changes that would prevent them from having to worry about some of the economic problems. Many of those things can be generalized and implemented by other local governments instead of them asking for federal assistance or raising taxes. After working with IBM and some YellowBleeders, we found that all components (except the forum) were fully operational. Lincoln Brewster featured in the Line 6 Newsletter
Sat, Aug 9th 2008 3:49p   Chris Whisonant
This was cool - the most recent Line 6 newsletter has a "recommended" section in which they have this:Lincoln Brewster discusses his live rig and the great gear responsible for creating his sought-after sounds. Here they link to a YouTube clip where Lincoln discusses the gear he uses live. This was random to see Lincoln, who is a great worship leader and guitarist, featured in this. We have done a good bit of his music at church. Senator Obama Makes Paris Hilton Look Like a Recluse
Tue, Aug 5th 2008 9:28a   Chris Whisonant
Sounds like something that the vast right-wing conspiracy would be accused of saying through a new John McCain ad. And to make the point that there is a wild media frenzy surrounding Obama, the McCain camp did release an ad touting that Obama is "the biggest celebrity in the world" complete with a passing picture of Paris Hilton. However, the title of this blog post isn't something that McCain is saying to undermine Obama. Here's the full quote:"Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fam [read] Keywords:

Synching iPhone with Google Contacts

First of all, this is not quite as easy as it should be. For one, you can&os;t force an initial one-way push from iPhone to Google. It&os;s either merging both or overwriting the iPhone&os;s contacts with those from your Google account (the contacts are actually stored in GMail). Removing notes.ini settings via the console
Fri, Jul 18th 2008 10:24a   Chris Whisonant
The other week I was made aware of something I did not know was possible. It turns out that the reason I never knew it was possible was that it is new with Domino 8. I found this out after attempting the trick on a Domino 7.0.3 server... With previous releases of Domino, if you wanted to remove a line from the notes.ini, you had to manually edit the file. But now, with Domino 8, you can type set config Notes_ini_Setting= and this will remove the line completely. In previously releases, the lin [read] Keywords: domino notes bleedyellow bleedyellow.com server

Not to be confused with the iPhone 3G (the newly-released hardware that I hope to acquire sometime), the iPhone 2.0 software is now available. I actually loaded mine yesterday after reading of the availability at iPhone Central. Although the 1st Generation iPhones can run this same 2.0 software, there are some extra features that the iPhone 3G will have due to the hardware upgrade. Obviously, it will take advantage of the 3G data networks and it has built-in GPS. This one's for all of the conspiracy theorists out there. At the link, you can watch videos of this test performed in 1988, but here are the results. And just to make sure I'm clear - there are many who still believe that the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11 wasn't a plane at all. This is because they cite that there wasn't any debris left. Well, these videos and tests from 1988 prove that if a plane crashes into a concrete object that no debris will be left. I received a copy of the book Lotus Notes Domino 8: Upgrader&os;s Guide just before Lotusphere. It is published by Packt Publishing and was authored by a team of 7 people who work at ISSL (IBM Software Services for Lotus). As the title states, this book is for anyone wanting to upgrade to ND8. As 8.0.1 is coming out this week, many shops will be anxious to upgrade at this time. This book will be very beneficial for you. Fragmentation and Domino
Fri, Feb 15th 2008 1:03p   Chris Whisonant
Over at IdeaJam, someone posted an idea on certifying NTFS defragmentation utilities for Domino. Below is my comment there - I would love to see what some of you think about this. Also, here is an example of what I see time and again when looking at fragmentation on Domino systems: I don't care what file system you use, if you are using Domino you will have fragmentation. Even the WAFL fs has a defrag utility, even though it may be less susceptible. The "problem" with Domino databases is th [read] Keywords: domino , database , idea jam , ideajam

OK, so here's my album cover (generated using the criteria below). Apparently it's the thing to do today... 1 - Go to Wikipedia's random article page. The first article you get is the name of your band. 2 - Go to the Random Quotations page. The last four words of the last quote is the album title. 3 - Go to Flickr's Interesting photo page. Third picture, no matter what it is, is your album cover. 4 - Put it all together to make your album. Either crop it to CD cover size, or just use the raw [read] Keywords:

Thu, Dec 6th 2007 11:19a   Chris Whisonant
While we're on Sametime... The process for placing the network install package on the Sametime server to be able to download it from stcenter has changed (drastically) with Sametime 8.0. There is a thread on the topic at devWorks: Sametime 8.0 Client Download - "this feature has not been enabled". Even after following the instructions for setting this up, some (myself included) were still receiving the "this feature has not been enabled" error message. Apparently, the trick is clearing your br [read] Keywords: sametime , network , server

Gospel of Judas Update
Wed, Dec 5th 2007 10:48a   Chris Whisonant
Back in 2006, I wrote three posts about the newly "discovered" Gospel of Judas: Part I - General Information Part II - Thoughts on the Translation Part III - National Geographic Channel TV Special We all remember a ton of fanfare about this finding. I even had someone tell me that it would undermine Christianity as we know it! Well, I doubt you'll see any fanfare about the latest information on this translation. To say that the translators made sophomoric mistakes would be an insult to sophomo [read] Keywords: document

IBM Is At It Again! (or Get Your Sametime Hotfixes!)
Tue, Dec 4th 2007 7:04a   Chris Whisonant
So last month I wrote about the release of hotfixes for Quickr 8.0.0.2 (or FP1) on the day after the fixpack was released. At that time I stated: "First of all, I can see no possible way that enough customers called in within a day and IBM was able to reproduce, compile, and generate a Hotfix posted to Fix Central within the span of a day." Today I see that there are Fixes to known stability issues with Sametime 8.0 server. And how long have these stability issues been seen in production environ [read] Keywords: ibm , lotussametime , quickr , sametime , server

Are You Ready For Y2K?
Tue, Nov 27th 2007 10:46a   Chris Whisonant
While in Rock Hill last week, I caught this out of the corner of my eye in the discount movie (VHS!) bin in a CVS Drug Store: So will your family be prepared for Y2K? It's never too late to make sure! By the way - no wisecrack comments about Rock Hill just being behind the times... [read] Keywords:

Just Installed IE7 And Here Are The Results
Tue, Nov 27th 2007 10:43a   Chris Whisonant
This was what I got after the (apparently) clean reboot when I just installed IE7: OK, so I'm puzzled as to whether the serious error was that I held out and ran IE6 for so long or whether the error was my upgrading to IE7!?! I guess time will tell... [read] Keywords:

What To Choose For New Sametime Installations?
Fri, Nov 9th 2007 7:54a   Chris Whisonant
On a Domino for iSeries List to which I subscribe, the question was asked if one would recommend going to 7.0.3. Is it stable on i5 V5R4 yet? The question was asked in relation to running Sametime 7.5.1 CF1 and not having to use the 7.0.1 jvm with the 7.0.2 server code. I hope you find my reply amusing...7.0.3 is a major bug fix release. If you're planning on a Sametime upgrade or install, I would load up 7.0.3 just so I don't have the hodgepodge of Fixpacks, Hotfixes, Hacked older versions of J [read] Keywords: domino , dwa , ibm , sametime , template , bug , java , server

Domino 8: 101 - Enhanced Quota Feature
Wed, Nov 7th 2007 1:19p   Chris Whisonant
A recently published devWorks article details the Enhanced Quota Feature in Domino 8. This enhancement will proactively prevent the creation of memos, calendar entries, and to-dos if a mail file is at or near a certain quota threshold. In prior releases, the user would be able to begin the creation of the document and receive an error when attempting the save operation. This takes the quota enforcement a step further. Note that the document states that this can be enforced via policies. I have [read] Keywords: document , domino , notes , policies
