Yosemite Bluetooth Audio Issues, Anyone?
Tue, Nov 18th 2014 9:16a   Chris Whisonant
I'm wondering if any of my readers have found any solutions to this or have run into it yourselves? I was hoping that the .1 update to Yosemite would fix this, but I see from comments at this post that I'm not alone in my woes. Below is my comment related to the issue... I'm very disappointed with the bluetooth audio lag. We're not talking about sub-second delays or "some lag" that would be expected with Bluetooth audio devices. What's happening since the Yosemite 10.1 [read] Keywords: apple google iphone mac macbook

On the Insidiousness of Facebook Messenger's App Permissions
Thu, Aug 7th 2014 7:10a   Chris Whisonant
Much has been said lately about how horrible it is that Facebook is not only forcing their mobile users to use their new Messenger application (in order to send one-on-one or group messages), but also this app has permissions that no sane person should accept. The theory is that Facebook is overstepping their bounds and is now intruding (even further) into our lives. Being the logical person I can be, I knew that the full Facebook app just had to have similar permissions. Yet it seems that nob [read] Keywords: connections application email facebook google mobile network

Just what is this Mail.Next thing?
Wed, Feb 5th 2014 7:09a   Chris Whisonant
Simply put (and as it was put to me at Connect 14), it's a J2EE application that talks to iNotes. As you may know, today there is a component available in IBM Connections (since 4.0) called Connections Mail. This is a fairly simple interface in Connections that surfaces your mail and calendar. How is this implemented? It's a J2EE application that talks to iNotes. Here's what you get with that today: When IBM releases Mail.Next, it was demoed as looking like this: [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm inotes notes application interface websphere

In response to: Notes 9.0.1 and MavericksAs a response to my previous post on this topic, IBM has release/updated a technote on Notes support for Mac OS X 10.9 (aka Mavericks). One line that made me laugh was this: "This early testing was fruitful and Apple was able to make code changes that benefited compatibility with Notes." There are some good fixes noted as being addressed in 9.0.1, but none of them appear to address the upgrade issue above that I (and others) have run into. [read] Keywords: ibm notes apple mac

I'm extremely excited to be presenting (again) with Mitch Cohen at IBM Connect 2014. We are looking forward to having another fun-filled TV show-themed session this year. In the Show 'n Tell track again this year, our session title is How to Create a Perfect Profile: A Hitchiker's Guide to A Smarter Workforce. Because Everyone Has 16 cores lying around
Wed, Nov 27th 2013 9:19a   Chris Whisonant
As I was checking in on the Sametime forum today, I saw that the new Sametime 9.0 MCU requires quite a load of hardware. If you follow through to the Sametime Wiki Article regarding the A/V Deployment, you'll see the following gem: The Video Manager and the Video MCU each must be on its own computer. Best practice calls for 16 core, 16 GB for each computer. Yes, that's 16 cores for each server. Lest we think this is just a recommendation, we may want to reconsider this. Notes 9.0.1 and Mavericks
Tue, Nov 5th 2013 6:50a   Chris Whisonant
I've been running 9.0 for a while on my Macbook Air. My only problem has been that 4 out of 5 days I have to force quit Notes at the end of the day. After upgrading to Mavericks after it was released, I was prompted to upgrade Java and things were OK. Then, 9.0.1 was released and I tried upgrading. Nothing happened after launching Notes, and I couldn't see any errors in logs. I tried deleting the Expeditor folder (like Workspace folder for Windows...), but that didn't help either. My Next Tablet?
Fri, Nov 1st 2013 12:30p   Chris Whisonant
Up until hearing recently that Apple now makes the iPad Air, I had talked myself into upgrading my Acer A500 10.1" tablet to either an iPad Mini or something like a Nexus 7. Basically, I had decided that I would be fine with the smaller form factor for my use cases (Kindle app and news/rss reading, social networking, note taking, not much gaming, etc...). Here was a great review I saw of the iPad Mini vs. Nexus 7. I'm a Mac guy, but I do kind of like the Android tablet. I really like SwiftK [read] Keywords: connections ibm apple mac networking

Some Mail and User Migration Tips
Thu, Aug 29th 2013 7:49a   Chris Whisonant
Over the course of the years, I have been involved with many IBM Domino mail consolidation/migration projects. This could be in the form of an acquisition, data center consolidation, moving users to hosted servers, etc… I would like to share a few of the "little" things that I've learned or implemented that help these projects succeed. A good setting to enable for Connections Bookmarks
Fri, Jun 7th 2013 2:54p   Chris Whisonant
This afternoon I added a bookmark to our internal Connections instance and a colleague said it would be nice if the new link wouldn't hijack the current window/tab. I said to myself, "Self, it would be great if there were a way to control this through a config file." So, I hop onto the server to look at the dogear-config-cell.xml file in the LotusConnections-config directory on the server. Sure enough, there is a section for configurable options. Using Domino 9's DBMT For Failover Stability
Mon, May 13th 2013 1:50p   Chris Whisonant
I have encountered several large customers (usually running an IBM OS) who have had major issues with the stability of their cluster-mates during a failover scenario. My recommendation in the past has been using program documents with some updall tasks to keep the Inbox and All Documents indices fresh.* Usually, running this once per week helps. If you're still running Domino 8.5.3 or earlier, you may want to do this. Less Log Clutter with Notes and Domino 9
Wed, Apr 24th 2013 12:19p   Chris Whisonant
As I was monitoring server tasks today with the Domino 9.0 Administrator Client, I saw something I haven't seen before. As you may know, when you are refreshing the Server > Status > Server Tasks section in the Admin Client, that output has historically been echoed back to log.nsf since show tasks debug is the background request sent to Domino. That generally amounts to multiple log documents created making it difficult to scan for the information you may actually need. But now the 9 [read] Keywords: admin domino ibm notes server

Tue, Apr 9th 2013 1:30p   Chris Whisonant
I have blogged about new compact options with 8.5.x previously, and now I would like to point out some new options with Domino 9.0. First of all, from what I can determine the options available with DEBUG_ENABLE_COMPACT_8_5=1 are now available out-of-the-box with 9.0. By setting that parameter to =0 and issuing a load compact -?, the options from that parameter are all still valid. Another configuration parameter you should set is MailFileDisableCompactAbort=1. Mitch posted the details about this, but I learned that we should not refer to Traveler HA Servers as being in a "traveler cluster" as this can be confusing. They should instead be referred to as "Traveler HA Pools." It definitely makes sense to refer to the Traveler HA Pool in this way. Thanks for the clarification, Smith! After 6 Years A Possible Answer to a Blog Post
Fri, Oct 26th 2012 12:08p   Chris Whisonant
Over 6 years ago I blogged about what I believed to be a bug in Domino SMTP routing. It is something that has cropped up for me randomly over the years as well, but without a real solution. Sometimes restarting the router would clear things up and sometimes just a tell router update config would do the trick. Back in 2006, I asked "Should mail routing not look up to the mail routing (MX) records for resolution instead of just looking up to the DNS A record?" Is the new Notification Center one of the coolest enhancements for iOS5? No doubt! But is it some stellar Apple innovation? No. But not because many will say it's very similar to Droid Notifications. divIm happy to let you know about a few updates and fixes weve added to the BleedYellow site./divdiv /divdivFirst, there were some issues with an older version of the header.html file we were using. This was causing some of the services (like Homepage) to render quot;iunknown user/iquot; for the logged in username. And many of the other services would not show the logged in account iat all/i. Why Gmail is Better Than Lotus Notes (Or Is It?)

ikeyman Not Allowing 2048 bit keysize
Mon, Jan 4th 2010 11:04a   Chris Whisonant
Earlier today I was renewing the SSL certificate for BleedYellows IHS server. But I ran into a slight issue in that the IBM SSL Key Management utility (ikeyman) was only giving me the choice of 512 or 1024 bit key length. But now, 2 years later (wow, time flies!), GoDaddy requires 2048 or 4096 bit requests and does not accept a 1024 bit request. This is good to know, for sure!
