Strange Error After Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.2.1 Upgrade
Chris Whisonant

divI tweeted the solution already, but here are some more details about what I just ran into. Note: when I updated this server, it was previously running Domino 8.5.1 with Traveler 8.5.1. I upgraded Domino and then Traveler. Even accounting for a host reboot, the whole process on this production server took 15 minutes. /divdiv /divdivHere is the error I received when http was attempting to load:br /br /a href=http://www.bleedyellow.com/blogs/lotusnut/resource/BLOGS_UPLOADED_IMAGES/travelerhttpjvmerror.png target=_blankimg alt=image src=http://www.bleedyellow.com/blogs/lotusnut/resource/BLOGS_UPLOADED_IMAGES/travelerhttpjvmerror.png style=display: block; margin: 0pt auto; text-align: center; position: relative; //a /divdiv /divdivI suspected it was just a JVM Heap Size problem, but for posteritys sake I did a quick search on the errors below. However, I didnt find any specific hits for Domino. But what I did find confirmed my suspicion./divdiv /divdivI did a ish conf http*/i and saw that my HTTPJVMMaxHeapSize was set to 64M. br /br /To fix this, I did a iset conf httpjvmmaxheapsize=128M /i(you could also add this to server configuration document). br / br / After loading http again, all was well!br /br /bOne important thing to note/b for this is that, a href=http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21377202according to this IBM Technote/a, the default for 8.5 and 8.5.1 was 256M. But if you havent explicitly set the value for 8.5.1, after an upgrade to 8.5.2 it will be set to the default of 64M - which is apparently too low for Traveler 8.5.2.1. The default of 64M appears to be ok for 8.5.2.0 Traveler, so when you upgrade, keep an eye out for this!/divdiv /divdivHere is the text of the error messages I received (for those who may be searching for them) /divdiv /divdivHTTP JVM: JVMJ9GC019E -Xms too large for -Xmxbr /HTTP JVM: JVMJ9VM015W Initialization error for library j9gc24(2): Failed to initializebr //div

Just what is this Mail.Next thing?
Wed, Feb 5th 2014 7:09a   Chris Whisonant
Simply put (and as it was put to me at Connect 14), it's a J2EE application that talks to iNotes. As you may know, today there is a component available in IBM Connections (since 4.0) called Connections Mail. This is a fairly simple interface in Connections that surfaces your mail and calendar. How is this implemented? It's a J2EE application that talks to iNotes. Here's what you get with that today: When IBM releases Mail.Next, it was demoed as looking like this: [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm inotes notes application interface websphere

In response to: Notes 9.0.1 and MavericksAs a response to my previous post on this topic, IBM has release/updated a technote on Notes support for Mac OS X 10.9 (aka Mavericks). One line that made me laugh was this: "This early testing was fruitful and Apple was able to make code changes that benefited compatibility with Notes." There are some good fixes noted as being addressed in 9.0.1, but none of them appear to address the upgrade issue above that I (and others) have run into. [read] Keywords: ibm notes apple mac

Speaking At IBM Connect 2014
Thu, Dec 12th 2013 11:47a   Chris Whisonant
I'm extremely excited to be presenting (again) with Mitch Cohen at IBM Connect 2014. We are looking forward to having another fun-filled TV show-themed session this year. In the Show 'n Tell track again this year, our session title is How to Create a Perfect Profile: A Hitchiker's Guide to A Smarter Workforce. Here is the abstract: Profiles are the centerpiece of IBM Connections and your social business. IBM Connections ships with scripts to connect to your LDAP Directory. Because Everyone Has 16 cores lying around
Wed, Nov 27th 2013 9:19a   Chris Whisonant
As I was checking in on the Sametime forum today, I saw that the new Sametime 9.0 MCU requires quite a load of hardware. If you follow through to the Sametime Wiki Article regarding the A/V Deployment, you'll see the following gem: The Video Manager and the Video MCU each must be on its own computer. Best practice calls for 16 core, 16 GB for each computer. Yes, that's 16 cores for each server. Lest we think this is just a recommendation, we may want to reconsider this. Notes 9.0.1 and Mavericks
Tue, Nov 5th 2013 6:50a   Chris Whisonant
I've been running 9.0 for a while on my Macbook Air. My only problem has been that 4 out of 5 days I have to force quit Notes at the end of the day. After upgrading to Mavericks after it was released, I was prompted to upgrade Java and things were OK. Then, 9.0.1 was released and I tried upgrading. Nothing happened after launching Notes, and I couldn't see any errors in logs. I tried deleting the Expeditor folder (like Workspace folder for Windows...), but that didn't help either. My Next Tablet?
Fri, Nov 1st 2013 12:30p   Chris Whisonant
Up until hearing recently that Apple now makes the iPad Air, I had talked myself into upgrading my Acer A500 10.1" tablet to either an iPad Mini or something like a Nexus 7. Basically, I had decided that I would be fine with the smaller form factor for my use cases (Kindle app and news/rss reading, social networking, note taking, not much gaming, etc...). Here was a great review I saw of the iPad Mini vs. Nexus 7. I'm a Mac guy, but I do kind of like the Android tablet. I really like SwiftK [read] Keywords: connections ibm apple mac networking

Some Mail and User Migration Tips
Thu, Aug 29th 2013 7:49a   Chris Whisonant
Over the course of the years, I have been involved with many IBM Domino mail consolidation/migration projects. This could be in the form of an acquisition, data center consolidation, moving users to hosted servers, etc… I would like to share a few of the "little" things that I've learned or implemented that help these projects succeed. These are just some tips and the list is, of course, not an all-inclusive outline of steps. It should go without being said that many of the [read] Keywords: acl administration adminp domino ibm notes notes client ods bleedyellow bleedyellow.com database email network server

A good setting to enable for Connections Bookmarks
Fri, Jun 7th 2013 2:54p   Chris Whisonant
This afternoon I added a bookmark to our internal Connections instance and a colleague said it would be nice if the new link wouldn't hijack the current window/tab. I said to myself, "Self, it would be great if there were a way to control this through a config file." So, I hop onto the server to look at the dogear-config-cell.xml file in the LotusConnections-config directory on the server. Sure enough, there is a section for configurable options. There is also only one configurable opt [read] Keywords: connections dogear server xml

Using Domino 9's DBMT For Failover Stability
Mon, May 13th 2013 1:50p   Chris Whisonant
I have encountered several large customers (usually running an IBM OS) who have had major issues with the stability of their cluster-mates during a failover scenario. My recommendation in the past has been using program documents with some updall tasks to keep the Inbox and All Documents indices fresh.* Usually, running this once per week helps. If you're still running Domino 8.5.3 or earlier, you may want to do this. After implementing this with one customer, they had no more issues with st [read] Keywords: domino ibm ldd lotus notes updall bleedyellow bleedyellow.com server
