What laptops, smartphones and tablets do I use for work?
Mon, Jan 18th 2016 6:31p   Christopher Pepin
As a follow up to my earlier post on how I have my Apple iDevices configured, I thought I'd share details on the hardware I use for work: Apple MacBook Pro (13 inch) my primary work laptop. When I work out of my home office, I connect my MacBook Pro to a 24" external monitor and an external Apple keyboard. I have other Macs (MacBook, MacBook Air) that I use for testing as well as several Windows laptops and tablets that I use for testing Apple iPhone 6 (64GB) is my primary work smartphone. I

Ambient Weather Station WS-1400-IP - thumbs up!
Sat, Jan 2nd 2016 9:30p   Christopher Pepin
A year ago I purchased the Ambient Weather WS-1400-IP OBSERVER Solar Powered Wireless Internet Remote Monitoring Weather Station for my home and I couldn't be happier. For $150, it's extremely easy to setup and use, full-featured, wireless, solar-powered and allows me to share my data via Weather Underground free of charge. My home weather station is a perfect example of the Internet of Things (IOT), cloud, big data and analytics in action and I used it as a teaching tool for my kids. The fo

SteelSeries Nimbus Wireless Gaming Controller - thumbs up!
Wed, Dec 30th 2015 11:33p   Christopher Pepin
I previously reviewed the Apple TV gen 4 and one of my complaints was that the new remote control wasn't great for playing games. I'm happy to report that the SteelSeries Nimbus wireless gaming controller solve this issue. Sold at Apple stores and online, the Nimbus can be used with iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac and easily connects via Bluetooth. The controller includes a built-in rechargeable battery and is easily recharged via an Apple Lightning cable. The controller is well-made, comforta

How I have my Apple iDevices configured
Tue, Nov 24th 2015 1:23p   Christopher Pepin
A colleague recently asked me how I have my Apple iPhone, iPad, Mac, AppleTV and Apple Watch configured. While there are lots of ways and everyone will have their personal preferences, here are mine: iTunes - I use a single iTunes id for all my Apple devices so all my purchases are accessible. While I was initially excited with the prospect of Family Sharing, it doesn't support iTunes Match (see below) and wasn't an option for me. I use the same iTunes id for work and personal, for iCloud a

Riega Apple Watch replacement band - thumbs up!
Sun, Nov 22nd 2015 9:22p   Christopher Pepin
I own a space grey 42mm Apple Watch Sport with the black plastic sport band. It's a great watch but I've been wanting to purchase a replacement band for a dressier look. The bands that Apple sells are very nice but also expensive. I was looking for something more affordable (e.g. aftermarket bands) My first attempt was the $40 Happy Cell blue leather loop. The band's biggest problem was that the magnet wasn't strong enough and didn't hold the watch on my wrist. The second problem was that

New Apple TV impressions - thumbs down!
Mon, Nov 2nd 2015 4:36p   Christopher Pepin
I preordered the new Apple TV (32GB model) and it arrived as scheduled at my home on Friday via UPS. The new Apple TV is also available for purchase in Apple retail stores. I'm a longtime Apple TV user (and fan) and I've purchased each new Apple TV the day it was released. I had high hopes for the redesigned Apple TV with the new app store, Siri support, touch remote and more but ultimately I was disappointed. The new Apple TV is still very much a "hobby." First impressions The first Ap

Apple's September 9 announcement - what I'm looking forward to
Tue, Sep 8th 2015 2:06p   Christopher Pepin
At this time tomorrow, Apple is hosting an event where they are expected to launch the new iPhone "6S." The event can be watched live, online at Apple's website or on Apple TV. While we don't know exactly what will be announced, the following are the most popular rumors and my take: iOS 9 and Apple Watch 2.0. I've been using the iOS 9 beta on my iPad and I love the new and improved multitasking feature which allows two apps to run side by side and even watch a video in a third window.

My visit to the US Open Tennis 2015
Wed, Sep 2nd 2015 10:30a   Christopher Pepin
I attended the US Open tennis tournament on Tuesday with my daughter. Readers of this blog may recall my previous visits in 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006. However, this was the first time my eight-year-old daughter attended and she loved it - especially the American Express Fan Experience complete with fan court and virtual reality. This year, I attended the Tuesday night session and saw multiple matches including the main event between Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios in

4 Reasons to Upgrade to Windows 10
Wed, Jul 29th 2015 2:49p   Christopher Pepin
Earlier today, Microsoft released Windows 10 - the latest and last release of Windows. I've been running the beta on multiple laptops, hybrids and tablets for months and I'm definitely a fan. The following are my top four reasons for upgrading to Windows 10: New and improved user interface. If you're a Windows 8/8.1 user, you know that Microsoft tried, unsuccessfully, to force a touch interface with the new full-screen start screen. Windows 10 corrects this, brings back a new and improved

Multitasking on iPad Air 2 with iOS 9 beta
Mon, Jul 27th 2015 1:32p   Christopher Pepin
One of the key features in iOS 9 beta is enhanced multitasking for iPad which has three key capabilities: Slide Over: temporarily display and use a second mobile application while still displaying the firstSplit View (iPad Air 2 only): run two mobile applications side-by-sidePicture in Picture: play a video is a resizable window In the screenshot above, I'm running three applications at the same time using Split View and Picture in Picture with seamless performance. The three apps are:Safar

My Apple HomeKit wish list
Mon, Jul 6th 2015 5:13p   Christopher Pepin
As an Apple technology enthusiast, I'm particularly interested in Apple HomeKit which promises to "use your iOS device to control any of the accessories that you have in your home, like lights, locks, thermostats, smart plugs, and more." I have an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch as well as an Apple TV. Here's my initial short list of home automation tasks: Open, close and check on the status of my garage doors from my Apple Watch and iPhone - both on premise and when away from my house (via App

Impressions of Android M and iOS 9 for the enterprise
Wed, Jun 10th 2015 10:42a   Christopher Pepin
When Google and Apple announce new mobile operating systems (Android M and iOS 9) I'm interested in what the new features from two unique perspectives: what the new features will mean to me as a user as well as an enterprise user. As an Information Technology manager for IBM leading mobile adoption and providing Information Technology (IT) support to senior executives, I need to understand how new features can improve the employee experience and the implications (e.g. security, infrastructure,

My 10 years of blogging

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of when I started blogging both inside and outside of IBM. My first blog was about IBM's new blogging guidelines which encouraged employees to blog. Aside for 2+ years that I blogged using IBM's Blog Template, all off my external blogging has been on this site which leverages Google Blogger My Blogger.com stats for the last ten years:

One Week with the Apple Watch - Hits and Misses
Thu, May 7th 2015 11:12a   Christopher Pepin
After one week with the Apple Watch, I'm a fan. However, there is definitely room for improvement. I haven't worn a watch in over 10 years and I debated the Apple Watch long and hard. Did I really I need an Apple Watch for $400? After all, my iPhone is always in my pocket and it does way more than just tell time. I pre-ordered the Apple Watch Sport 42mm (large) in space grey with a black plastic band at 3am ET on April 10 via the Apple Store app on my iPhone. I already had the watch in my

Apple Watch and MacBook impressions
Mon, Apr 13th 2015 8:16p   Christopher Pepin
I was in New York city over the weekend with my son and had the opportunity to try the new Apple Watch and MacBook for myself at the Apple store on 5th Avenue. A few initial impressions: It takes a bit of work to understand/navigate the watch interface and understand all the buttons (rotate crown, crown button, side button, touch screen). However, from other reviews I've read, it's a steep learning curve. After 15-20 minutes of use, I was starting to get the hang of it. Still, I'm looki

National Engineers Week 2015
Wed, Apr 1st 2015 7:12p   Christopher Pepin
I participated in National Engineer's week at my home town middle school with my IBM colleagues earlier today. IBM is a sponsor of the yearly event which is designed to increase awareness of math and science and foster teamwork and creative thinking. This was my six year participating in the event and I had the pleasure of presenting to my son's 7th grade science calls We each discussed our IBM engineering career, the different types of engineers, and how students can prepare for a caree

Weather powered by the Internet of Things, cloud and analytics
Tue, Mar 31st 2015 11:16a   Christopher Pepin
Earlier today, IBM announced the creation of a new Internet of Things (IoT) unit and announced a partnership with the Weather Company (parent company of the Weather Channel) to leverage IBM cloud and analytics. I wanted to share my personal experience installing and using my first home weather station leveraging the same technologies (IoT, cloud, analytics) albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. Last November, I purchased an Ambient WS-1400-IP home weather station. My key requirements were low c

My impressions of the Windows Phone 10 technical preview
Tue, Feb 24th 2015 6:47p   Christopher Pepin
Microsoft released the first Windows Phone 10 technical preview and I upgraded my Nokia Lumia 635 smartphone. While there isn't much new functionality in the first technical preview, I upgraded to see how Microsoft would make the preview available and what the upgrade process would be like. Microsoft uses the same "Windows Insider" program that they use on the PC. I'm been running Windows 10 technical preview on my Lenovo X200 laptop since it was released last fall. Windows Phone 10 tec
