4 Reasons to Upgrade to Windows 10
Wed, Jul 29th 2015 2:49p   Christopher Pepin
Earlier today, Microsoft released Windows 10 - the latest and last release of Windows. I've been running the beta on multiple laptops, hybrids and tablets for months and I'm definitely a fan. The following are my top four reasons for upgrading to Windows 10: New and improved user interface. If you're a Windows 8/8.1 user, you know that Microsoft tried, unsuccessfully, to force a touch interface with the new full-screen start screen. Windows 10 corrects this, brings back a new and improved

Multitasking on iPad Air 2 with iOS 9 beta
Mon, Jul 27th 2015 1:32p   Christopher Pepin
One of the key features in iOS 9 beta is enhanced multitasking for iPad which has three key capabilities: Slide Over: temporarily display and use a second mobile application while still displaying the firstSplit View (iPad Air 2 only): run two mobile applications side-by-sidePicture in Picture: play a video is a resizable window In the screenshot above, I'm running three applications at the same time using Split View and Picture in Picture with seamless performance. The three apps are:Safar

My Apple HomeKit wish list
Mon, Jul 6th 2015 5:13p   Christopher Pepin
As an Apple technology enthusiast, I'm particularly interested in Apple HomeKit which promises to "use your iOS device to control any of the accessories that you have in your home, like lights, locks, thermostats, smart plugs, and more." I have an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch as well as an Apple TV. Here's my initial short list of home automation tasks: Open, close and check on the status of my garage doors from my Apple Watch and iPhone - both on premise and when away from my house (via App

Impressions of Android M and iOS 9 for the enterprise
Wed, Jun 10th 2015 10:42a   Christopher Pepin
When Google and Apple announce new mobile operating systems (Android M and iOS 9) I'm interested in what the new features from two unique perspectives: what the new features will mean to me as a user as well as an enterprise user. As an Information Technology manager for IBM leading mobile adoption and providing Information Technology (IT) support to senior executives, I need to understand how new features can improve the employee experience and the implications (e.g. security, infrastructure,

My 10 years of blogging
Sun, May 17th 2015 10:42p   Christopher Pepin
Today marks the 10 year anniversary of when I started blogging both inside and outside of IBM. My first blog was about IBM's new blogging guidelines which encouraged employees to blog. Aside for 2+ years that I blogged using IBM's Blog Template, all off my external blogging has been on this site which leverages Google Blogger My Blogger.com stats for the last ten years:

One Week with the Apple Watch - Hits and Misses
Thu, May 7th 2015 11:12a   Christopher Pepin
After one week with the Apple Watch, I'm a fan. However, there is definitely room for improvement. I haven't worn a watch in over 10 years and I debated the Apple Watch long and hard. Did I really I need an Apple Watch for $400? After all, my iPhone is always in my pocket and it does way more than just tell time. I pre-ordered the Apple Watch Sport 42mm (large) in space grey with a black plastic band at 3am ET on April 10 via the Apple Store app on my iPhone. I already had the watch in my

Apple Watch and MacBook impressions
Mon, Apr 13th 2015 8:16p   Christopher Pepin
I was in New York city over the weekend with my son and had the opportunity to try the new Apple Watch and MacBook for myself at the Apple store on 5th Avenue. A few initial impressions: It takes a bit of work to understand/navigate the watch interface and understand all the buttons (rotate crown, crown button, side button, touch screen). However, from other reviews I've read, it's a steep learning curve. After 15-20 minutes of use, I was starting to get the hang of it. Still, I'm looki

National Engineers Week 2015
Wed, Apr 1st 2015 7:12p   Christopher Pepin
I participated in National Engineer's week at my home town middle school with my IBM colleagues earlier today. IBM is a sponsor of the yearly event which is designed to increase awareness of math and science and foster teamwork and creative thinking. This was my six year participating in the event and I had the pleasure of presenting to my son's 7th grade science calls We each discussed our IBM engineering career, the different types of engineers, and how students can prepare for a caree

Weather powered by the Internet of Things, cloud and analytics
Tue, Mar 31st 2015 11:16a   Christopher Pepin
Earlier today, IBM announced the creation of a new Internet of Things (IoT) unit and announced a partnership with the Weather Company (parent company of the Weather Channel) to leverage IBM cloud and analytics. I wanted to share my personal experience installing and using my first home weather station leveraging the same technologies (IoT, cloud, analytics) albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. Last November, I purchased an Ambient WS-1400-IP home weather station. My key requirements were low c

My impressions of the Windows Phone 10 technical preview
Tue, Feb 24th 2015 6:47p   Christopher Pepin
Microsoft released the first Windows Phone 10 technical preview and I upgraded my Nokia Lumia 635 smartphone. While there isn't much new functionality in the first technical preview, I upgraded to see how Microsoft would make the preview available and what the upgrade process would be like. Microsoft uses the same "Windows Insider" program that they use on the PC. I'm been running Windows 10 technical preview on my Lenovo X200 laptop since it was released last fall. Windows Phone 10 tec

National Retail Federation (NRF) Big Show 2015
Wed, Jan 21st 2015 1:22p   Christopher Pepin
I returned from the National Retail Federation (NRF) “Big Show” in New York City last week. IBM had one of the largest booths on the expo floor and showcased a wide range of Smarter Retail and Smarter Commerce solutions. A few of the key highlights: IBM keynote session "Unique and Distinct: The New Customer Experience" by Terry Jones, Chairman, Wayblazer, Founder, Travelocity.com and Founding Chairman, Kayak.com and John Mesberg, IBM General Manager, Smarter Commerce / Smarter Cities. 2014 Mobile Technology Year in Review and Looking Ahead to 2015
Mon, Jan 5th 2015 7:25a   Christopher Pepin
The most important new mobile device for me in 2014 was the Apple iPhone 6. The world's best smartphone got bigger and better with the introduction of two larger screen sizes, iOS 8 and integration with Mac via OS/X Yosemite. Android took a big step forward in 2014 with the release of Lollipop 5. As usual, Nexus devices, like the excellent Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet got the upgrade first. Deployment of Lollipop 5 will continue via mobile carriers in 2015. There were some excel

How to enable and use AppleTV peer-to-peer AirPlay discovery and playback
Wed, Dec 17th 2014 5:45p   Christopher Pepin
One of the great new features of Apple iOS 8 is the ability to wirelessly connect iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to Apple TV without first connecting to a wi-fi network. Previously, it was necessary to connect both your AppleTV and your iPhone/iPad to the same wi-fi network. Here are a few examples of where this feature is useful: A sales rep brings their AppleTV with them to a client site and connects it to the client's projector. The sales rep delivers a presentation wirelessly from their iPad

Mon, Dec 8th 2014 7:05a   Christopher Pepin
It was a record five day span for holiday shopping between November 27 (US Thanksgiving) and December 1 (Cyber Monday), and mobile devices played a large part. A few statistics: Thanksgiving mobile sales were up 25.4% versus 2013, and browsing on smart phones and tablets accounted for 52.1% of all online traffic. New solutions that promise to make e-mail more productive from Google, Microsoft and IBM
Wed, Nov 12th 2014 12:46p   Christopher Pepin
Over the last few weeks, both Google and Microsoft have released e-mail solutions that promise to make the flood of e-mail easier to manage. IBM announces its new product next week. Here are a few initial impressions: Google Inbox Google Inbox beta was launched a few weeks ago and consists of a new web interface and mobile app. I've been using it with my personal Gmail account which is my primary "personal" e-mail. I've always liked the "tabs" feature of Gmail which organized my e

Looking for faster in-home wi-fi performance? Consider the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 Smart WiFi Router (R7000)
Tue, Oct 14th 2014 6:28p   Christopher Pepin
I'm a work from home employee and my wife, kids and myself have a wealth of wi-fi devices from phones, tablets, PC's, Chromebooks, media players and more. My wi-fi router is a critical component of my home network and I recently upgraded to the Netgear Nighhawk AC1900 WiFi Router (R7000) with support for 802.11ac. I've been using a Netgear N600 router since 2010 but it was starting to drop connections which forced me to manually reconnect devices. In addition, with more 802.11ac compatible

Microsoft announces Windows 10: questions and answers
Tue, Sep 30th 2014 4:25p   Christopher Pepin
In a small media event in San Francisco earlier today, Microsoft officially unveiled Windows 10 - the successor to Windows 8. While I didn't attend the event, here are a few of the questions and answers I assembled from various sources on the web: Q: What is Windows 10? A: The successor to Windows 8 which is designed to power not just PC's and tablets, but phones (Windows Phone), Xbox and the Internet of Things. While Windows 10 is one platform, it is several user experiences - optimized f

Mon, Sep 22nd 2014 8:45a   Christopher Pepin
Apple released iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 last week and the upgrade is well underway inside IBM. IBM has over 125,000 mobile devices in use with iPhones and iPads being the most popular smartphones and tablets. IBM began testing iOS 8 when the first beta was released in June to ensure that applications that IBM sells to customers as well as the applications that IBM has developed internally work with iOS 8. Key applications like Fiberlink MaaS360, IBM Traveler, Connections and others had support f

Enterprise Implications of the iPhone 6, iOS8 and the Upcoming Apple Watch
Thu, Sep 11th 2014 2:05p   Christopher Pepin
My interest in the new iPhone 6, iOS 8 and the upcoming Apple Watch is more than just personal. I'm part of the team responsible for enabling "MobileFirst" for 435,000+ IBM employees world-wide. Inside IBM, we support three mobile platforms: Apple iOS, Google Android and BlackBerry. IBM provides corporate owed devices to select employees in addition to offering a BYOD or Bring Your Own Device program. At present, there are over 125,000 smartphones and tablets in use inside IBM. US Open Tennis 2014
Tue, Sep 2nd 2014 6:45a   Christopher Pepin
I attended the US Open tennis tournament last Friday evening with my son. Readers of this blog will recall my previous visits to the US Open in 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006. This year, I attended the Friday night session and saw two matches which included Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova. Celebrities in attendance included comedian Will Ferrell and former NYC mayor David Dinkins. Photos of the event can be found on Facebook. As in the past, IBM is a major sponsor and prov
