Apple Watch and MacBook impressions
Mon, Apr 13th 2015 8:16p   Christopher Pepin
I was in New York city over the weekend with my son and had the opportunity to try the new Apple Watch and MacBook for myself at the Apple store on 5th Avenue. A few initial impressions: It takes a bit of work to understand/navigate the watch interface and understand all the buttons (rotate crown, crown button, side button, touch screen). However, from other reviews I've read, it's a steep learning curve. After 15-20 minutes of use, I was starting to get the hang of it. Still, I'm looki

National Engineers Week 2015
Wed, Apr 1st 2015 7:12p   Christopher Pepin
I participated in National Engineer's week at my home town middle school with my IBM colleagues earlier today. IBM is a sponsor of the yearly event which is designed to increase awareness of math and science and foster teamwork and creative thinking. This was my six year participating in the event and I had the pleasure of presenting to my son's 7th grade science calls We each discussed our IBM engineering career, the different types of engineers, and how students can prepare for a caree

Weather powered by the Internet of Things, cloud and analytics
Tue, Mar 31st 2015 11:16a   Christopher Pepin
Earlier today, IBM announced the creation of a new Internet of Things (IoT) unit and announced a partnership with the Weather Company (parent company of the Weather Channel) to leverage IBM cloud and analytics. I wanted to share my personal experience installing and using my first home weather station leveraging the same technologies (IoT, cloud, analytics) albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. Last November, I purchased an Ambient WS-1400-IP home weather station. My key requirements were low c

My impressions of the Windows Phone 10 technical preview
Tue, Feb 24th 2015 6:47p   Christopher Pepin
Microsoft released the first Windows Phone 10 technical preview and I upgraded my Nokia Lumia 635 smartphone. While there isn't much new functionality in the first technical preview, I upgraded to see how Microsoft would make the preview available and what the upgrade process would be like. Microsoft uses the same "Windows Insider" program that they use on the PC. I'm been running Windows 10 technical preview on my Lenovo X200 laptop since it was released last fall. Windows Phone 10 tec

Wed, Jan 21st 2015 1:22p   Christopher Pepin
I returned from the National Retail Federation (NRF) “Big Show” in New York City last week. IBM had one of the largest booths on the expo floor and showcased a wide range of Smarter Retail and Smarter Commerce solutions. A few of the key highlights: IBM keynote session "Unique and Distinct: The New Customer Experience" by Terry Jones, Chairman, Wayblazer, Founder, Travelocity.com and Founding Chairman, Kayak.com and John Mesberg, IBM General Manager, Smarter Commerce / Smarter Cities. 2014 Mobile Technology Year in Review and Looking Ahead to 2015
Mon, Jan 5th 2015 7:25a   Christopher Pepin
The most important new mobile device for me in 2014 was the Apple iPhone 6. The world's best smartphone got bigger and better with the introduction of two larger screen sizes, iOS 8 and integration with Mac via OS/X Yosemite. Android took a big step forward in 2014 with the release of Lollipop 5. As usual, Nexus devices, like the excellent Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet got the upgrade first. Deployment of Lollipop 5 will continue via mobile carriers in 2015. There were some excel

How to enable and use AppleTV peer-to-peer AirPlay discovery and playback
Wed, Dec 17th 2014 5:45p   Christopher Pepin
One of the great new features of Apple iOS 8 is the ability to wirelessly connect iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to Apple TV without first connecting to a wi-fi network. Previously, it was necessary to connect both your AppleTV and your iPhone/iPad to the same wi-fi network. Here are a few examples of where this feature is useful: A sales rep brings their AppleTV with them to a client site and connects it to the client's projector. The sales rep delivers a presentation wirelessly from their iPad

Wed, Nov 12th 2014 12:46p   Christopher Pepin
Over the last few weeks, both Google and Microsoft have released e-mail solutions that promise to make the flood of e-mail easier to manage. IBM announces its new product next week. Here are a few initial impressions: Google Inbox Google Inbox beta was launched a few weeks ago and consists of a new web interface and mobile app. I've been using it with my personal Gmail account which is my primary "personal" e-mail. I've always liked the "tabs" feature of Gmail which organized my e

Tue, Oct 14th 2014 6:28p   Christopher Pepin
I'm a work from home employee and my wife, kids and myself have a wealth of wi-fi devices from phones, tablets, PC's, Chromebooks, media players and more. My wi-fi router is a critical component of my home network and I recently upgraded to the Netgear Nighhawk AC1900 WiFi Router (R7000) with support for 802.11ac. I've been using a Netgear N600 router since 2010 but it was starting to drop connections which forced me to manually reconnect devices. In addition, with more 802.11ac compatible

Microsoft announces Windows 10: questions and answers
Tue, Sep 30th 2014 4:25p   Christopher Pepin
In a small media event in San Francisco earlier today, Microsoft officially unveiled Windows 10 - the successor to Windows 8. While I didn't attend the event, here are a few of the questions and answers I assembled from various sources on the web: Q: What is Windows 10? A: The successor to Windows 8 which is designed to power not just PC's and tablets, but phones (Windows Phone), Xbox and the Internet of Things. Apple released iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 last week and the upgrade is well underway inside IBM. IBM has over 125,000 mobile devices in use with iPhones and iPads being the most popular smartphones and tablets. IBM began testing iOS 8 when the first beta was released in June to ensure that applications that IBM sells to customers as well as the applications that IBM has developed internally work with iOS 8. Thu, Sep 11th 2014 2:05p   Christopher Pepin
My interest in the new iPhone 6, iOS 8 and the upcoming Apple Watch is more than just personal. I'm part of the team responsible for enabling "MobileFirst" for 435,000+ IBM employees world-wide. Inside IBM, we support three mobile platforms: Apple iOS, Google Android and BlackBerry. IBM provides corporate owed devices to select employees in addition to offering a BYOD or Bring Your Own Device program. At present, there are over 125,000 smartphones and tablets in use inside IBM. With the new school year comes a decision on what device(s) they'll use to do their school work - both in class and at hime. Readers of this blog may recall my post from last year where I discussed how my middle school-aged son uses a Google Chromebook. This year I have another son entering middle school and I have to make a similar decision. Looking back over the past year, here are my perceptio

Windows Phone 8.1 impressions

Microsoft released Windows Phone 8.1 on July 15 with over a hundred new features including notifications, Cortana voice assistant as well as a wealth of new enterprise features. This is first upgrade to Windows Phone since the 8.0 release in October 2012. I own a Nokia Lumia 5210 which I purchased without a contract for $50 (after rebate) in 2012. Last week, an over the air AT&T update for Windows Phone 8.1 was released and I upgraded. While the upgrade took several hours and involved mu

An annual event, this year's conference had over 16,000 attendees who earn their living from selling Microsoft-based solutions. The highlight of the conference was a passionate, vision keynote from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. This was my first time attending the Microsoft partner conference as part the IBM MobileFirst team which incl

Android for Work announced at Google IO conference
Fri, Jul 11th 2014 12:25p   Christopher Pepin
The initial releases of Apple iOS, Android and Windows Phone were aimed squarely at consumers and offered few if any features geared to business users. However, all that's changed in the last few years with the growth of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Corporate Owned, Personally Enabled (COPE). Increasingly, users want to access both work and personal information from a single mobile device (AOL CEO Tim Armstong's three smartphones: Android, iOS and BlackBerry not withstanding) Jump forwar

I travel regularly for business and personal and the use of mobile technologies has dramatically improved the overall experience. Here are a few of my favorite mobile applications for travel: Travel plans: TripIt. All of my travel plans (hotel, airline, restaurants, e

Apple expands iOS 8 Enterprise Support at WWDC

Earlier today, Apple kicked off their annual World Wide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. During the keynote session, Apple CEO Tim Cook and team provided details on the upcoming version of OS/X and iOS. Of particular interest to me are the new enterprise features in iOS 8. Last year, Apple introduced a wealth of enterprise features in iOS 7 and iOS 8, due out this fall, didn't disappoint. With over 4,000 new API's, iOS 8 is poised to be one of the largest upgrades yet.

Divide is joining Google and looking ahead to Apple WWDC
Fri, May 30th 2014 10:08a   Christopher Pepin
On May 19, Divide announced that they were being acquired by Google. Given the integration of Divide with IBM Endpoint Manager, I'm very familiar with the solution and used it on my smartphone to access IBM work data. Divide is a mobile container solution and the Divide secure workspace provides separation between personal and work data. One of things I liked most about Divide was that my mobile device no longer required a device password and I only got prompted to enter a password when I acce
