More From the Ministry of Obvious Facts: Hangover Impairs Judgment in Young Adults

Really?!

Hangover Impairs Judgment in Young Adults
By: Rachael Myers Lowe

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - It's not enough to "sleep it off" after a night of drinking.

According to a study released today, the effects of intoxication last long after the booze is out of the blood, not only leaving a nasty hangover but also slowing reaction times and the ability to concentrate the next morning.

Rhode Island and Massachusetts researchers found that it didn't matter whether the liquor consumed was clear or dark; the level of brain impairment was the same the next morning.

"People will be impaired the morning after - after the alcohol leaves the system," Dr. Damaris Rohsenow of the Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies in Providence, Rhode Island noted in a telephone interview with Reuters Health.

The findings are based on a study looking at the effects of heavy drinking on 95 young adults between the ages of 21 and 33. The subjects spent two nights at the Boston test facility. One night they were given alcohol (either vodka or bourbon mixed in cola) and the other night they were given a placebo. The researchers determined their blood alcohol levels, sleep patterns and ability to think quickly and over a long period of time.l.

Accessing a Windows Sever console session remotely
Wed, Mar 3rd 2010 1:42p   Craig Wiseman
In Windows Server 2000, when you accessed the server via RDP you couldn't get a Console session. (Unless you used VNC or other remote control program). Since, for example, the Domino server console runs/displays on the system's console connection, it's helpful to be able to connect remotely to it. Easy, use mstsc /console! This changed in Server 2003 when M$ introduced/provided access to "console mode". With RDP/RDC versions below 6.1, you could connect to a console session using the Start [read] Keywords: admin domino server vista

Managing Remote Servers: Remote Desktop Session timeout
Wed, Mar 3rd 2010 11:09a   Craig Wiseman
I've been at sooo many clients where when they try and connect to their windows servers via RDP, they get the "All active sessions are in use now, sorry, go fly a kite." message. This is because (unless you're running terminal services) Windows servers have a limit of two active remote sessions. And 99.99999% of the time, it's because some folks logged in remotely and forgot to logout - leaving the sessions live and useless. There are two solutions. + Use ultraVNC. I'd vote for this [read] Keywords: connections notes policies desktop microsoft properties server

Is this how Palm comes back?
Tue, Mar 2nd 2010 4:00p   Craig Wiseman
I get to work with smartphones all the time, and I enjoy watching the markets are develop. RIM's got its devotees, as does Android but only Apple and Palm (webOS devices) have really developed and honed the seamless user experience. Reviewers and folks who have worked with WebOS itself really like it, and Palm has figured out the right way to deal with developers. But the Pre & Pixi haven't taken off (maybe because their screens are too small?). There is an interesting twist here, though [read] Keywords: apple development google iphone linux rim

Heard these on the way in NPR's Morning Edition, both are worth listening to! The Teen Brain: It's Just Not Grown Up Yet A neuroscientist mom says teens act like teens because their frontal lobes aren't fully developed. If you have a PS3 other than the new slimeline model, don't use it for the moment! There's some issue between the PS3, it's internal clock, and the PS3 network. Lotusphere 2010 Day 0 (so far)
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:08a   Craig Wiseman
Day -1 was a nice travel day, BALD, Saints game day. Guess it's a good thing when I introduce myself to Mary Beth Raven, and she says "Oh, I know you by your avatar", and smiles (mostly). Bailed on BALD (which was hoppin') to go watch the Saints game (virtually) with the family and try and finish up some work so I could attend LS2010, Day 0. Here’s another page you can block, China: Charter 08
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:08a   Craig Wiseman
Here's the text to Charter 08. This is a charter drawn up and signed by a large number of chinese to define & promote reform in China. It's also the kind of stuff that gets filtered out of web searches. There are folks on trail and in jail in China now for signing and supporting this. If by posting it here, I add one little bit more work to the official control freaks in China, I'm happy. If you're bored and have time, you might throw it up on your blog as well - just to ick the dark side. [read] Keywords: development security wiki

The next ’big’ thing? Apple Tablet/iTab/iGuide

The Kindle has been quite big. The Nook is quite big. Both are impressive book readers. The iPhone is impressive. The iPod is impressive. Even Granny thinks so. Netbooks have shown how small, portable, computing changes things. What if there was a slick product that combined all of them? Looks like there will be: The Apple Table. Read More here.
