BlackBerry Business Cloud Services: The truth behind the story from one who knows
David Hablewitz

There is a lot of talk going around about BlackBerry Business Cloud Services  on various blogs:  Paul Farris’ Blog   Volker Weber’s blog
First, let me say, unless you work(ed) for Microsoft or RIM, this is totally irrelevant and transparent.  BlackBerry support has been available with Office365 for years.  The big deal here is that RIM finally finished their cloud solution which was code-named “Contrail”.  This has been long in the making.  It’s not insider news, it’s just that few people noticed it when n4bb.com published it back in March 2011.

All it means is that instead of those BES servers sitting in Microsoft’s data centers, they will be sitting in RIM’s data centers.  So what’s the big deal?  It’s all in the cloud, so you don’t care where the servers sit.  What’s more, this doesn’t really apply to all of Office365, only the standard edition for smaller customers.  The bigger customers are hosted in dedicated environments and they won’t be moving their BES services for awhile.  But it doesn’t matter.  You won’t notice any difference and the transition is completely invisible to the customer, save that as it is RIM’s product, they will probably be more responsive to upgrades to the latest version and more savvy in troubleshooting issues.  This is really more a positive press opportunity than anything for a company overdue for some good news.

If there were anything even mildly interesting in this story it would be that Domino isn’t mentioned.  But I expect that’s just around the corner and they probably don’t want to confuse the message.  If your company uses Exchange, you don’t care about Domino. (By the way, LotusLive AKA Smart Cloud also supports BES deployments)  This will also give RIM a second press release of glory when they make a similar announcement for Domino.

New easy way to get your IBM software downloads via SmartCloud!
Tue, Aug 12th 2014 4:14p   David Hablewitz
OK, you’ve seen my article giving a detailed review about how bad Passport Advantage website was for many years.  It took awhile to get fixed.  But for the most part, much of that has improved dramatically since – and at least partially because of – that article.  But downloads are still a bit of a pain.  That is, until now! If you subscribe to SmartCloud Notes, you can get to your downloads in Passport Advantage directly from the Apps – Downloads and Setup menu.  It [read] Keywords: ibm lotus notes

Request to repair Bothell road and provide pedestrian access to 1000 homes instead of spending $42M on a Boulevard
Mon, May 26th 2014 6:15a   David Hablewitz
Open letter to the Bothell City Council and City Manager: The 1000 households that live in Morningside, Hollyhills, and Pioneer Hills don’t need a wider sidewalk to connect Pop Keeney to the park at Bothell Landing as you are proposing with AB #14-75 to designate Main Street and the multi-way boulevard as parkways at a cost of $42 Million.   What we need is a safe way for our kids to walk or bike from our neighborhoods to the YMCA or the softball and soccer fields in the North Creek busi [read] Keywords: blackberry

Helping my friend the best I can. His story will move you.
Thu, May 8th 2014 6:14a   David Hablewitz
Brian Steele is my good friend and one of the best managers I have ever worked for.  I remember the day when he quietly explained to me that they had just learned his son Cullen had Pulmonary Hypertension.  I never heard of it before and asked  “Is it bad?”  “Yeah, it’s bad.” he said.  Watch this video and learn Cullen’s story. At the time Brian mentioned it, I didn’t fully appreciate what it all meant or the impact it would have on him and his fa [read] Keywords:

SmartCloud Tip #04: Special considerations for Soft Deletions with MMR
Sat, Mar 15th 2014 6:12p   David Hablewitz
The SmartCloud administration panel has a setting for how long deleted messages are in the trash.  From the administration screen, in the left navigation click on IBM SmartCloud Notes, Click Account Settings… Click Email Management. This setting overrides the setting in the database properties – advanced tab – soft deletions. However… If your users are using Managed Mail Replicas (MMR), then they have a local replica and the Notes client will still process soft de [read] Keywords: acl admin administration ibm notes notes client database email properties server

Wealth is not measured by how much you have, but by how much you give
Thu, Mar 13th 2014 11:12p   David Hablewitz
This time of year I am normally helping out at my YMCA with their Partners With Youth campaign, sitting in a phone bank with other volunteers, calling people in the community asking for donations to help their cause. Phone bank volunteers working hard This is a charity that helps provide funding for kids whose family can’t afford to put them into programs like before and after school care, swim lessons, or summer camp. In some cases this care is vital in making it possible for their parent [read] Keywords: community
