Social marketing… what’s in it for me?
Wed, Nov 13th 2013 7:46a Femke Goedhart Monday morning someone in my network tweeted a link to a site called “#UncoverPhilips“. A promotion by the large multinational we all know quite well to get some social buzz around their new logo that they are announcing today (Nov 13th 2013). The site was quite simple and showed a gray image hiding the new logo. Users could uncover a pixel of the image and so uncover the logo before it’s actual launch on Wednesday the 13th of November. Thu, Feb 21st 2013 1:56a Femke Goedhart Usually I don’t really buy into these as it is of course a clever way of advertising a beer brand, but… I do love the premises of taking a process like the hiring process that is so standard, mandated and rigid that it has taken out any chance of really showing your true personality as a candidate and twisting it around completely to become something in which you can’t help but show something of yourself. Yammer on Tour - Ehh...yeah....ehh
Fri, Mar 2nd 2012 7:10p Femke Goedhart Yesterday I attended the Yammer on Tour business event in
Amsterdam. Advertised as "an interactive, educational and fun
event to learn how to harness the power of Enterprise Social
Networks". As my knowledge about Yammer was fairly limited and
I'm always interested in anything having to do with Social Business I saw it as
a perfect opportunity to see what Yammer is and what it can do for an

The bright side of errors (just for fun)
Thu, Feb 16th 2012 2:23p Femke Goedhart Sometimes errors can really help put things in perspective..... or simply give you a chuckle. Todays highlight were two errors that made my day. Rest assured, neither were real problems but both gave me a great big laugh. So to brighten your day, here they are!
This one made me almost feel proud of the achievement!
And this one from Microsoft online help.... well irony :) [read] Keywords: blogger
Testing - the Japanese confusion test
Tue, Feb 14th 2012 4:22p Femke Goedhart When I test software I love to test for the quirky stuff. I know, why bother, but I'm one of those people for whom the devil is in the detail.
And one of my favorite tests for multi-lingual applications is to test for consistency by changing the language to either Simplified Chinese or Japanese. The reason? Well for one it has a different character set, flushing out non-translated items right away (even if they sound the same the different characters will make it look different).

Lotusscript TimeDifference & Long data type - Grrr....
Sun, Feb 5th 2012 12:15p Femke Goedhart Spent Friday investigating some freakish code problems. This one just blew my mind....
When assigning numbers to a data type what do you expect to happen when you assign a number to big to fit the assigned data type? Right, an overflow error.
Well explain this then....
Ok, yes I know, you can solve it by using "difference# = notesDateTime.TimeDifferenceDouble( notesDateTime )" method which will return a double. I just can't get my head around the fact that it didn't return an er [read] Keywords: lotusscript

The Twitter censorship storm: Hype or reality wake-up call?
Fri, Jan 27th 2012 10:16p Femke Goedhart A storm has been raging on Twitter today after it announced on its corporate blog that it will implement an option to re-actively censor tweets or twitter accounts for readers in specific countries if a valid request to do so has been made by a legal entity. The example was given France and Germany prohibiting pro-Nazi statements.
It caused a host of blog posts and tweets from people strongly opposing this and calling it an infringement on the freedom of speech. Some better researched then o [read] Keywords: policies

Lotusphere.... what Social is about!
Sun, Jan 22nd 2012 2:29p Femke Goedhart Just home after a very long day/night of traveling it's finally time to do some reflecting on the past week. It's hard to put into words what it is I've been experiencing this week and while writing this blog post thousands of images, experiences and faces shoot through my head that made this week so special. It was only my second Lotusphere but I felt at home there as if I had been there for at least 20 years. And most of that is due to the incredible community.
How strong that community i [read] Keywords: lotus

Tue, Jan 17th 2012 11:11p Femke Goedhart I spent a good hour yesterday in the UX
lab. Talking to UX specialists about Social Software and how I think
it could improve. Now why is that important? Well it's not and it is...
My opinion on it's own isn't important at all but by being one of
those thousands that is actually sharing it I might be able to make
a tiny difference in how the products I work with, and my customers
work with are build. And isn't that what 'being social' is all
about? Making a difference together...?

Confumbled - Social Media breaking down language borders
Thu, Jan 12th 2012 3:31p Femke Goedhart So I'm Dutch and I'm in no way a native English speaker. I do ok, get myself understood and can even be relatively 'witty' in my Social Media responses. It has allowed me to interact and connect to numerous people around the world and it has even given me some new friends. Ok, yes, I know. How can you call them friends without ever meeting them?!? But with some of them they really do feel like friends.
And in about 48 hours I'm flying out to Lotusphere to actually meet them....

"Burning the midnight Soc'oil"
Sat, Jan 7th 2012 2:46a Femke Goedhart Definition
To be Socially engaged on online Social Networks into the wee hours of the night.
The incessant staying up not to miss out on the social fun. Often caused by having a very lively online Social Network that is mostly located on the other side of the pond and the abundant availability of devices that make accessing ones social tools (eg. Skype, Twitter, Facebook, etc) possible everywhere and anytime (eg. in bed). Doing it long enough could have detrimental consequences for [read] Keywords: lotusphere
NLLUG 2012 announced!
Thu, Jan 5th 2012 2:12p Femke Goedhart W00t! NLLUG is coming back!
After a very successful 2 day NLLUG in 2010 and missing out on it last year it is time for NLLUG 2012! As part of the Social Business Convention, NLLUG is returning to the Amsterdam Arena for a two day, 4 track, 45+ session event.
It's all still very fresh (as of today the NLLUG site is still showing 2010 stuff), but I'm sure more details will follow shortly. For those that weren't there two years ago: The Amsterdam Arena is one of the biggest soccer sta [read] Keywords: blogger

Happy Social Year!!
Sat, Dec 31st 2011 3:53a Femke Goedhart A few years back I made a dramatic change in my life. From being a pessimistic melodramatic I decided to become an optimist. I know sounds good, he?! "Where do I find that button?" Well you don't. It took a lot of hard work and self-reflection to make a chance like that and it still is a work in progress. But overall I think I'm doing pretty well.
To give you an example of how melodramatic I used to be I will tell you a story my mum used to tell me....
As a kid, I must have been about [read] Keywords: ibm
"Hello?!? I understand you are not there but where do I go now?"
Tue, Dec 27th 2011 11:31a Femke Goedhart It's that time of year again! The holidays are here and most of the companies I work with are closed for the week or working on half power. Nothing wrong there. Heck, I'm officially 'off' myself at this moment!
Sending out message right now is knowing you'll receive lots of Out-Of-Office notices back. I know, and I expect it. There is one thing though that can really irritate me: The inconsiderate OoO.
Some people seem to think that if they're gone that all work around them stops too. [read] Keywords: blogger
"IBM 5in5" five predictions for the next five years
Mon, Dec 19th 2011 8:33a Femke Goedhart IBM regularly comes out with predictions about the future of Tech. Not always accurate, most often very futuristic. On the Building a Smarter Planet Blog 5 of those were publicized today. I can't help thinking that some are a bit too optimistic but then I was one of those that 3 years ago thought that 'Social' would never become a Business thing..... Now how wrong was I on that one!
