Notes 8.5 Announced and Released at MacWorld
Wed, Jan 7th 2009 1:30a Glenn Irvine Notes 8.5 has been released into Electronic General Availability (eGA), and I’m downloading the client as we speak.
I noticed the announcement at MacWorld today emphasised not only the release of 8.5, but also the free Lotus Symphony applications (1.2.1)
Ed Brill has the MacWorld Lotus Presentation on his Blog. Here’s a link.
So the wait is over… You can download the new client and the Domino Server now!
Look forward to giving it a quick review in the next week.

Email is Mission Critical - The Stats are Compelling
Thu, Dec 18th 2008 3:28a Glenn Irvine In a recent Radicati release, stats from the study ”Messaging & Collaboration - Business User Survey, 2008” show that corporate users on average are spending up to 25% of their working day sending and receiving email, receiving over 100 emails a day and sending 38 on average.
With a quarter of the average person’s working day spent handling email, how can any IT Infrastructure Business unit ignore that Email is mission critical to most corporate organisations. Yet, that is [read] Keywords: collaboration

Social Networking Etiquette - Two Great Articles
Sun, Dec 7th 2008 9:08p Glenn Irvine Two great articles in CIO Magazine this week outline the Dos and Don’ts for using LinkedIn and Facebook.
Interestingly, these are the two Social Networking technologies that I predominantly use on a day to day basis.
Like many, I largely have LinkedIn for managing my purely professional network; suppliers, clients, vendors, industry colleagues etc. Facebook on the other hand extends into my social circles, but maintains a somewhat professional face. (pardon the pun)

Thought it wouldn’t hurt providing the readers of this Blog with a sneak preview…
I’ve also added a quick survey poll at the end of the article to see if there is much use of Cloud Computing Services at this point in time.

Recession IT Spending Prioritisation - Collaboration!
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 7:29a Glenn Irvine I liked this article in CIO Magazine that listed some of the best methods for prioritising IT Spending during a recession.
For many of us, it goes without saying that implementing sound Collaboration strategies and tools that support our workforce, leads to significant cost savings, and something that is not always considered during recessionary times, employee satisfaction.

Facebook Social Networking Visualisation - Project Palantir
Mon, Nov 24th 2008 7:29a Glenn Irvine This is an interesting Visualisation demo for Facebook usage.
Have a look at the video demonstrating communications and volumes of comms between the various places on the globe.
Interesting to note the large tracks of this planet that still do not exhibit much traffic on the web, or more specifically, have not evolved to significant Social networking use.
I also couldn’t help but like the Project title… Speaks to my LOTR interest. Clever title.

In particular, I like the licensing models and appliance approach presented by Socialtext, and expect this will extend to the new offering.

Wed, Jul 9th 2008 1:45a Glenn Irvine The current news that Centrelink (Australia’s Social Security Organisation) has decided to stay with the Lotus Notes Platform [Article in Australian IT] is a significant one for the Australian Lotus Community.
Centrelink is one of the largest Notes Houses in the country, and a shift away would have sent a signal through the market.
The decision does however, highlight that Notes Domino is far more than just email. The installed Domino Application base in Centrelink is a very serious factor [read] Keywords: domino

CTO’s the Missing Role
Mon, Jul 7th 2008 1:23a Glenn Irvine In my daily role in Business Development, I constantly see a lot of waste in Tender processes at the extreme level. So much research leading to technology decisions is done by Tender/RFO/RFI/RFx… And in many cases the very nature of the tender process prevents the organisation from shifting course mid-stream based on new-found knowledge, and to the ICT idustry, it is a very wasteful process.
I feel much of this waste could be avoided by redirecting the Tender effort into a properly run and [read] Keywords: document

Aussies paying five times more… or 50% more
Tue, Jul 1st 2008 11:29p Glenn Irvine I saw this article in yesterday’s news, and with the Aussie Dollar almost on par with the Greenback at the moment (95.88c in the dollar at the time of posting), thought I would dip my toe in the water and see what the price difference between a single user of Notes is between the US and Australia.
Needless to say I was surprised to see a 50% price differential (Not favouring Australians).
Come on IBM… we love the software, and appreciate the fluctuations of international exchange, bu [read] Keywords: ibm

The Value of Enterprise Social Computing
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 10:26p Glenn Irvine If you ever felt you needed to justify to a C-Level Executive the value of Enterprise Social Computing, this article on LinkedIn achieving a US$1B valuation has to be it. That should be good enough to kick-start a serious investigation of Enterprise Social Computing capabilities like Lotus Connections.

Glenn

Ray Ozzie’s Ascendancy at Microsoft… What is in store for us
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 3:00a Glenn Irvine The following article from ComputerWorld/Network World today highlights that Ray Ozzie is still as sharp as ever, and has a keen eye on the industry. His comments not only affect the future of Microsoft and his view as the new Chief Software Architect, but the industry as a whole…
A careful read will highlight where Lotus needs to focus going forward to remain competitive. Hosted models, SaaS, Social and Cloud Computing are all to be seriously considered in my opinion.
