Reminder: IBM ConnectED Early Bird Discount Expires Friday
Thu, Oct 2nd 2014 9:14a Graham Acres Just a quick reminder to those considering attending IBM ConnectED in Orlando in January: the early bird discount expires tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 3 at midnight Eastern time. If you haven’t heard yet, the conference is being limited to 1500 attendees this time, so it won’t be the size of Lotuspheres past.
Also of note people are finding that the only accommodations available through the booking web site are the Dolphin and the Swan at $299 per night. Y&B and Port Orleans were t [read] Keywords: ibm
Win a Copy of Mastering XPages at MWLUG
Wed, Aug 20th 2014 9:13a Graham Acres Not that you should need any more motivation to attend MWLUG, but if you are still on the fence I am happy to offer another small incentive. Brytek Systems will be giving away three copies of Mastering XPages 2nd Edition during the conference. I have this book in my personal library and can attest that it is a great reference. Not only is it strong technically as you would expect, it offers some great nuggets too.
The conference organizers have graciously allowed me to present two sessions th [read] Keywords: domino
Unique Case of @ThisValue
Thu, Aug 14th 2014 10:10a Graham Acres I came across this little bug yesterday that I want to share. A client of mine has a traditional Notes application that has some fields populated from an Oracle database via Lotus Enterprise Integrator (LEI). There is a Connection document in LEI that includes among the fields mapped to the Notes app, two computed fields that are not actually updated by any data from Oracle. Those fields in Notes had a formula of ‘@ThisValue’.
What we noticed was that these two fields, after be [read] Keywords: lei
Two Quick Memories of Tim
Fri, May 16th 2014 3:11p Graham Acres I’m afraid I can’t claim to call Tim my friend, but only because we ever met face to face a couple of times. Like many people, I got to know Tim through what he shared with our community. I read his blog, watched his videos, and occasionally interacted through Skype. In fact, I watched the Java series he did for NotesIn9 only 2 weeks ago. I think that’s why this has hit me harder than perhaps I would have thought. I have his voice in my head. I even had a quick chat [read] Keywords: domino
Do You Want to Speak at MWLUG?
Mon, Apr 21st 2014 12:14p Graham Acres You may have noticed the announcement last week that the annual MWLUG user group meeting is accepting abstracts to speak this year. The conference is slated for August 27-29 in Grand Rapids, MI. After speaking two of the past three years, missing last year, I plan to be back this year and hope to have the opportunity to speak again. It is always rewarding to share with this wonderful community.
Which gets me to the point of this post. I have also had the good fortune of being able to spe [read] Keywords: admin
Wed, Oct 2nd 2013 10:11a Graham Acres Being in the same time zone as Bruce, and one of the last to see the sunrise today, many others have already offered the reasons why we are thanking Bruce for all he has done for our community, so I will simply say that I echo their thoughts, comments, and thanks enthusiastically. Bruce, we all very much appreciate everything you have done.
I want to offer something else, on a much deeper level. I read today that Bruce has been chairman of OpenNTF since 2001. Many know he lost his daught [read] Keywords: ibm
A Challenging Customer Experience with Lessons for All
Mon, May 13th 2013 12:12p Graham Acres I had what I would call a less than satisfying online customer experience over the weekend that has a good lesson that I'd like to share. The time has come for me to replace my laptop, and as much as I would love to move to Apple I was forced to put that move off until next time. So without naming the vendor, and it's someone we all know, I headed off to their web site to make my purchase.
I had done some research prior to making the purchase decision, so all I had to do was log in a [read] Keywords: apple
Follow up to my Spark Ideas Talk on Why I Ride My Bike
Tue, Feb 19th 2013 8:09a Graham Acres This is a follow up to my talk at the Nerd Girls Spark Ideas session at IBM Connect 2013.
Six minutes does not give one even enough time to begin to share some of this story, and a single blog post won't do it justice either, but I want to at least fill in some of the blanks and make more clear some of the thoughts I wanted to convey in my talk. Riding the bike in the Ride to Conquer Cancer became a way for me and my family to heal from the loss of our daughter, who is also a sister, [read] Keywords: ibm
A Happy Lotusphere Mistake
Thu, Jan 24th 2013 10:13a Graham Acres I had a happy mistake happen at Lotusphere last year that I hope to repeat at Connect this year. You may recall that just prior to Lotusphere 2012 there was a big announcement regarding the XPages Extension Library and the ability to use relational databases as back ends to XPages applications. Going into Lotusphere I had decided that I wanted to find out as much as I could about this to bring back to my clients.
Anyone who is a veteran of Lotusphere knows the pile of paper that is includ [read] Keywords: collaboration
Domino Designer Working Sets Standoff
Tue, Jan 24th 2012 8:59a Graham Acres I just tried to open my mail file in Domino Designer and received a prompt to add it to the current working set I was in. Before I had a chance to choose, I received the classic 'waiting for operation to finish' dialog. The problem is that the 'User Operation is Waiting' dialog has focus, which doesn't allow me to make the selection in the Domino Designer dialog. I am at a standoff that I suspect only a reboot will resolve. Anyone else run into this? [read] Keywords: domino
Lotusphere 2012 - Going In
Sun, Jan 8th 2012 9:25p Graham Acres Some thoughts going into Lotusphere 2012. This will be my 6th Lotusphere. I have been to LS 1997, 1998, 2000, 2010 and 2011. The break between 2000 and 2010 was not necessarily my choice, and it was a fun experience to compare the things that were the same and the things that had changed over 10 years. First of all, in 2000 people had been predicting the demise of Lotus Notes, so when I hear it now I pay less attention than before. The signs point in that direction unfortunately, but for no [read] Keywords: domino
