IdeaJam is . . . Jamming
Thu, Jan 8th 2009 11:19p   Gregg Eldred
Sorry about that title. I can't be the only that has noticed, but it seems that since several of the ideas on IdeaJam have made it into the Notes/Domino 8.5 codestream, it looks like more people, different people, have been adding their ideas to the site. Amazing what a "Completed" Idea can do. :-) Two recent Ideas that have my vote. Macworld Has Been Good For IBM/Lotus
Wed, Jan 7th 2009 9:19a   Gregg Eldred
While Paul Mooney is running a little contest to determine the date of Microsoft's Annual pre-Lotusphere Spoiler, you can't help but be impressed by IBM's initial salvo. Having a presence at Macworld while announcing and releasing Notes/Domino 8.5 has really brought out the coverage. "Brilliant" comes to mind. My simple Google News search brought up more than 50 news articles in less than a day. New Notebook: Dell Latitude D630
Tue, Jan 6th 2009 11:19p   Gregg Eldred
After about 6 years, I finally broke down and bought a new notebook, the Dell Latitude D630: In addition to a lot of RAM (4GB) and a host of accessories, this particular notebook has a 60GB solid state drive. Very, very quiet. So much so, that it is a bit unnerving. So, what did the D630 replace? A Dell Latitude CPi A. It was time for something new. :-) Technorati tag: Dell Latitude D630 [read] Keywords:

Several Palm sites have mockups of their best guess as to what the new Palm Nova smartphones will look like: TreoCentral opined: We heard yesterday that Palm's new smartphone will be a vertical slider with a flush, capacitive touchscreen like the iPhone and that it will feature some pretty snazzy transitions and animations and packs a lot of "wow factor". A while ago, there was an interesting conversation among the people I follow on Twitter. They were discussing books, and several people commented that one of the best books they had read was Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card. A book in the science fiction genre, that had quite a following, I found. I put it on my list of books to find at the library. Let's end the year with a review of Microsoft's Vista Operating System, courtesy of Lawrence Walsh at eWeek Channel Insider: Two years on, Vista is nothing short of an incompressible failure. According to Net Applications, Microsoft’s iron grip on the desktop showed signs of weakness in 2008 as Windows market share slipped below 90 percent market share for the first time in more than a decade. Tsar by Ted Bell
Mon, Dec 1st 2008 12:02a   Gregg Eldred
I was provided an advanced reading copy of Tsar by Ted Bell. This is the fifth novel in the Alex Hawke series and it continues the tradition Bell has developed of action and suspense using plausible plots concerning world events. In Tsar, Alex Hawke, a modern James Bond character, is recuperating on Bermuda after his injuries suffered in the novel Spy. During his recovery, he meets a beautiful Russian artist, Anastasia Korsakov. As the novel progresses, you discover that Anastasia, "Asia" to [read] Keywords:

What Does the Future Hold for Palm?
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 4:49p   Gregg Eldred
I have long had an affinity for Palm devices, which has led me to my current smartphone, the Palm 755p. But, as everyone knows, the market hasn't been good to Palm lately. They are competing against the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android devices. And the results haven't been pretty-Palm currently holds about 8.5% of the smartphone market, a distant third behind Apple and RIM. An article on Internetnews.com is less than rosy about Palm's long term viability, saying: "Palm lacks differentiation, [read] Keywords: apple blackberry development iphone ipod mobile php rim

Using a New Browser? You May Not Like On-line Shopping
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 3:49p   Gregg Eldred
Something I didn't think about: the "new" browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari may limit your enjoyment of on-line shopping this holiday season. From an article on Marketwatch.com: The 2008 web browser explosion could not have come at a worse time: the most important online holiday shopping season ever. As a result, some online shoppers will be faced with website pages that load slowly, are missing text or graphics, or even fail to complete the checkout function. "This year more than e [read] Keywords: firefox

Cold Fire by Dean Koontz
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 1:59p   Gregg Eldred
In a quest to continue reading most of Dean Koontz' early novels, this one was written in 1991, I picked up Cold Fire. Jim Ironheart is a very unique person; A voice drives him to save people. He doesn't know when the voice will move him, but when he hears it, he is single minded in his desire to get to a specific place to rescue someone. The introductory act of heroism is the saving of a child from being killed by a drunk driver in Portland, Oregon. It is during this action that a reporter, [read] Keywords:

e-Discovery And Apple
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 12:09a   Gregg Eldred
The Industry Standard has a very interesting, and cautionary, story concerning Apple and their lack of an e-mail retention policy. According to a recent legal filing . . . in the Psystar vs Apple antitrust case, Apple employees are responsible for maintaining their own documents such as emails, memos, and voicemails. In other words, there is no company-wide policy for archiving, saving, or deleting these documents. In additon to specifically talking about Apple, the article links to several [read] Keywords: apple archiving email

Watchers by Dean Koontz
Tue, Nov 25th 2008 11:49p   Gregg Eldred
A man is hiking in a remote area of California when he discovers a dog. As Travis attempts to continue along the path, the dog blocks him. When he tries to "outsmart" the dog, it seems to be a step ahead of him, refusing to allow him to continue. And then the woods get really quiet. The dog growls. The hair on the back of Travis' neck rises, so does yours. Something very unpleasant is out there, watching, stalking. Thus begins an incredible journey for Travis and the dog (later named "Einstein" [read] Keywords:

College Visits - Part II
Mon, Nov 24th 2008 11:10p   Gregg Eldred
The "Six Colleges in Three Days" Tour ended Saturday evening. The Flickr Set includes photos from this tour as well as the one we did in October. This tour started at Miami University on Thursday morning (we drove down Wednesday night) with a classroom visit. It didn't go well, as the class they chose for us was only taught on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. However, we were able to fill the time with an admissions interview and time with the Marines in the NROTC program. While talking wi [read] Keywords: google

As has been reported in the blogosphere, the Lotusphere 2009 Content Team is asking all registered attendees to select the sessions you are likely to attend. Sunday PostSecret
Sun, Nov 16th 2008 10:40p   Gregg Eldred
Today's Sunday PostSecret is a good one: While I haven't come across Post-It notes in any of the books I have borrowed from the library, I have come across bills, library cards, photos, and, most recently, a shipping order from Amazon.com (all of these items, I believe, were used as bookmarkers). The really strange thing about the Amazon receipt was that it was delivered to a person that lives in a house we once owned. Technorati tag: PostSecret [read] Keywords: notes

Hotel Options Continue to Change for Lotusphere2009
Sun, Nov 16th 2008 10:29p   Gregg Eldred
It seems that everyday, the hotel choices change for Lotusphere. A few days ago, you only had one choice if you were staying from Saturday through Friday. Now, there are a few more options. And you still have several choices if you are staying from Sunday through Thursday: It looks like more rooms are being made available as registrations increase. Or people are cancelling. The Register: IBM Lotus preps small biz software appliance
Wed, Nov 12th 2008 10:19p   Gregg Eldred
As only The Register can do, Timothy Prickett Morgan has written an article for them on Lotus Foundations. The opening paragraph sets the tone: It's pandemonium out there. Cats are living with dogs. There's chocolate in my peanut butter. Software units are selling servers and calling them appliances. To add further weight to what Ed and Bilal have been saying, The Register, being The Register, is a bit more blunt: The Lotus Foundations appliance, which is made in IBM's factories in China, i [read] Keywords: domino foundations ibm lotus microsoft

The Perfect Holiday Gift?

Have you noticed that Duffbert and I read and review books? Based on the hits from Planet Lotus, you haven't. :-) But that isn't stopping me from a recommendation. While I haven't read this book, I think that it will make a perfect holiday gift idea either for yourself or someone you know: Dilbert 2.0: 20 Years of Dilbert! From Scott Adams himself: It's heavy. It's handsome. It's 576 pages with nearly 4,000 of my best Dilbert comics. It's the book that took me 20 years to write, and it [read] Keywords: lotus planet lotus

The Dangerous Days of Daniel X by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge

After completing the current books in Patterson's Maximum Ride series, I was told that I should read the latest "teen" novel by James Patterson (and Michael Ledwidge), The Dangerous Days of Daniel X. Like Maximum Ride, Daniel X will be a series of at least three books. But Patterson and Ledwidge will have to release the next two without me. Darkfall by Dean Koontz
Mon, Nov 10th 2008 10:39p   Gregg Eldred
There are times when I find that I need to change my reading habits a little. Usually in those instances, I turn to a genre that I haven't read in a while. This time, I was in need of some horror. A recent review of Darkfall, by Dean Koontz, by Thomas Duff "Duffbert," was all I needed to pick this book up. Jack Dawson is a recent widower with two children, Penny and Davey and a New York detective. He and his partner, Rebecca Chandler, are called to another grisly murder scene. Books: A Memoir by Larry McMurtry
Thu, Nov 6th 2008 11:10p   Gregg Eldred
Books: A Memoir, by Larry McMurtry, is a book that may not appeal to a lot of people, maybe not even to hard-core McMurtry fans. However, I found it highly entertaining and enjoyable. McMurtry has penned a book detailing his life with books; as a buyer and seller of used, rare, and antique books and as a book lover. His life with books started when he was the recipient of a wonderful gift from his cousin. On his way to enlist in World War II, Larry's cousin stopped by their house, and gave h [read] Keywords:
