Cleveland: The Flats, the Mill, and the Hills by Andrew Borowiec
Gregg Eldred
As author Les Roberts states in the Introduction
to this book, "Cleveland is a tough town." The weather, politics,
and economy requires that this city be tough. However, if you say you live
in Cleveland, you may not actually live IN Cleveland. "Clevelanders"
live in Shaker Heights, Bay Village, Brecksville, and many other cities
that surround Cleveland. Thankfully, I have worked and played in Cleveland
and am familiar with many of the neighborhoods depicted in Andrew Borowiec's
book, Cleveland:
The Flats, the Mill, and the Hills,
but I have not seen them until now.

About the Author and the Essayists
Commissioned by the George Gund Foundation,
Andrew Borowiec took photographs of Cleveland for its 2002 Annual Report.
However, once he was finished, the George Gund Foundation provided the
support for their publication in an imprint of the Center for American
Places. What you see is a Cleveland that many know but never see. The pictures,
all in black and white and with only a couple of people, are stark, gritty,
industrial, touching, and beautiful. Black and white is the perfect medium
for Cleveland. Some photographs, taken in winter, seem colder; like a wind
off of Lake Erie. Others, in the summer, seem hotter, more humid. Much
like some of our summer days. In short, this is how Cleveland should look.
The photographs that really make an impact are of people's back yards,
overlooking the industrial Flats. Their choices of furniture do not seem
out of place; car seats, mismatched chairs, makeshift tables. Gritty furniture
for a tough people. Two photos require a careful reexamination - the disappearance
of a small house for an upscale townhouse. All that remains of the house
is its fence. It is strange that the fence seems to belong, but with a
much different meaning.
Andrew's choices of Les Roberts and
Rod Slemmons for the essays was a masterstroke. These two individuals add
more depth to the wonderful photographs and provide excellent insight into
Cleveland. While probably not popular with the Cleveland Travel and Convention
Bureau, this is a book that all Clevelanders should read. For those that
wonder about our fair city, it will reveal our industrial legacy. Slemmons;'
essay is a perfect ending to this wonderful book, as he recalls the people
that have populated this town. And in the end, you will realize that Les
Roberts was correct, this is a tough city and Borowiec has captured it.

SnTT: Resolving a Sametime Meeting Connection Issue
Wed, Jul 28th 2010 11:00p Gregg Eldred Some users, when attempting to attend a Sametime Meeting, never get connected to the meeting. Instead, they see a screen similar to this:
Restarting the browser doesn't help, neither does using a different browser.
However, there are two TechNotes that will help resolve this issue. The first one, "Java has discovered application components that could indicate a security concern" when attending Sametime classic meeting, will have you apply a hotfix for your version of Sametime. IBMSystems Magazine: 7 Tricks to a Smooth Domino 8.5 Upgrade
Wed, Jul 28th 2010 11:00p Gregg Eldred This article is primarily for those running Domino on iSeries (or whatever it is called these days. For you "older" people, "AS/400" will work) and was written by Kim Greene, IMHO, one of the finest Domino on the iSeries people on the planet. In it, she shares seven eight tricks for a successful, painless upgrade of your Domino server on iSeries.
Iâve upgraded several customers to Lotus Domino release 8.x or 8.5.x. Due to the many enhancements in the release 8.5.x code stream, customers a [read] Keywords: domino

Goodbye Palm: My New Mobile - HTC Incredible
Wed, Jul 28th 2010 5:57a Gregg Eldred For more years than I care to admit, I have been a loyal Palm user. My latest Palm is a Treo 755p, which has served me well for several years.
I've never really seen anything at Verizon that made me want to upgrade to something better. Not even a BlackBerry. But then the Android phones started arriving. People that have them talk very favorably of them. But still I waited; perhaps the iPhone would come to Verizon. Then, a client was going through an evaluation of their mobile devices. Case Study: Nokia and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler: Finnish building supplier at the forefront of mobile communications
Mon, Jul 26th 2010 3:21p Gregg Eldred A Nokia case study of Finnish building supplier, Oy C.J. Hartman Ab, using Nokia Eseries smartphones, Lotus Notes Traveler, Lotus Sametime Mobile, and Lotus Mobile Connect.
âIt was a natural move to take IBM Lotus Notes Traveler. One, we were already using Lotus Notes on the desktop; two, the switch to Traveler came with no extra fees; and three, the upgrade was easy. Done.â
The upgrade was completed in a matter of days. Lotus Notes mobile users now have quick access to email and a [read] Keywords: connections

Backroads of North Carolina by Kevin Adams
Sun, Jul 25th 2010 6:30p Gregg Eldred North Carolina is a state steeped in history,
diverse flora and fauna, and has miles of beaches on one end and rugged
mountains on the other. In short, North Carolina is a state that appeals
to a wide variety of people. However, I imagine that most people take hardly
any time to get to know the state, using its highways to simply take them
to the beaches of the Outer Banks or to destinations further south. If

Caught by Harlan Coben
Sun, Jul 25th 2010 10:21a Gregg Eldred If you are looking for a fast paced thriller/mystery,
Harlan Coben's latest, Caught,
will certainly do the trick. I was amazed that I finished the 400 page
novel in about a day. The drawback was that I found myself reviewing the
characters, plot twists, and revelations for much of the next day. Coben
has packed quite a bit of information in this novel, and it may take some
time to absorb it all. However, in Coben's favor, you will not simply put
this book down and forget it. You can't, you have [read] Keywords: blogging
