How to use the Pidgin IM instead of the Notes 8.5.3 embeddded Sametime, when the client does not behave well
Jesper B. Kiær

My embedded Sametime IM in my Lotus Notes 8.5.3 client does not behave well at all. I am a member of notesnet.dk, a network of Lotus Notes freelance consultants and we have a Sametime server to communicate with each other. After upgrading my Notes client to version 8.5.3 it has be nothing but trouble it feels. The Sametime server was upgraded and since then a bunch of error messages keep popin' up. I was advised to upgrade the embedded client by the admin and I did. That did remove the error messages, but instead I got some new ones and from one day on the list of uses did not show anymore Instead when hovering over the list a puzzling message would show. Sametime is just WAY to sensitive to version issues etc! (no wonder Sametime has gotten a bad reputation). So why not go for the stuff the works! The Pidgin Instant Messenger. Pidgin supports a bunch of IM standards: AIM Bonjour Gadu-Gadu Google Talk Groupwise ICQ IRC MSN MXit MySpaceIM SILC SIMPLE Sametime XMPP Yahoo! Zephyr Creating an account is really easy Easy? Yes But this will NOT work, you will get a "version mismatch" error.. Let fix this. Shut down the Pidgin client. You need to open up the config file for Pidgin "accounts.xml" to do some changes which on window 7 will be at C:Users[username]AppDataRoaming.purple Go down to the Sametime section for the account you have just created. 1 1533 0 im@abc.com Replace it with this: 1 8511 1533 0 im@abc.com 4608 and now I should work :-)

Goodbye NSF ...welcome XSF ...XPages Storage Facility
Thu, Jan 23rd 2014 3:36p   Jesper Kiaer
IBM Notes as development platform has been getting a good overhaul the recent years with the arrival of XPages. This has really boosted, and blown new air into IBM Notes/Domino and opened up for a lot of new possibilities. On the other hand the document database Notes Storage Facility ( NSF) has grown old (but maybe not ugly yet) and there has really been no major evolution the last many years. It is ridiculous the we have to deal with ancient old restrictions in 2014 like: • It is slow or [read] Keywords: dblookup domino ibm notes xpages database development java server sql

Beware @MailDbName now returns a different result in version 9.0.1 of IBM Notes
Tue, Nov 26th 2013 3:29a   Jesper Kiaer
Just a slight warning about @MailDbName in version 9.0.1 of IBM Notes. have a customer where they have a lot of old code which rely on @MailDbName and it has worked for years. Last year they started to use Managed Replicas for mail databases, and @MailDbName would still return values as if the mail was server based. In version 9.0.1 it has changed and @MailDbName now returns an empty string as if it is a local replica. [read] Keywords: ibm notes server

I have in former post on my blog, I have written about viewpanels in XPages in IBM Domino being very very slow. Have a look at http://nevermind.dk/nevermind/blog.nsf/subject/viewpanel-performance-issue-confirmed-by-ibm. Philippe Riand some time ago wrote to me that a fix would be available in 8.5.4 aka 9.0, but a apparently the fix did not make in time. But in 9.0.1 there is a fix for the issue :-) You can in the "What’s new for Developers in IBM Domino & Domino Designer 9.0.1" Webin [read] Keywords: domino ibm xpages database properties

Stumbled upon this 970 page long Slideshow "IBM Sametime 9 Complete - Basic Features Installation - From Zero To Hero" from IBM on the Sametime 9.0, http://www.slideshare.net/FrankAltenburg/ibm-sametime-9-complete-basic-features-installation-from-zero-to-hero-for-domino-ldap-version-10 Really ?? 970 pages? .. and this is only basic features. The classic recycle design pattern is flawed in some document iterations
Fri, Apr 26th 2013 7:57a   Jesper Kiaer
As we all know you need to recycle your Domino Objects in Java to free up the back-end C++ objects, or your server will crash in the end. People in general use the same pattern when iterating through documents. Something like this: Document doc = view.getFirstDocument(); while (doc != null) { Document tmpdoc = view.getNextDocument(doc); doc.recycle(); doc = tmpdoc; } This will work in must situations, but in at least one situation you will get a serious NotesException: "Object has been [read] Keywords: domino bug database java server

Using Solid-State Drives in your servers? Beware research show risk of massive data loss
Tue, Mar 12th 2013 4:46p   Jesper Kiaer
If you like me are using Solid-State Drives (SSD) in servers because of the great performance ...beware! New research show that 13 out of 15 Solid-State drives will suffer data loss or worse when they lose power. That is really scary numbers! ... so maybe it is time to check the UPS again? ;-) See more at http://www.infoworld.com/t/solid-state-drives/test-your-ssds-or-risk-massive-data-loss-researchers-warn-213715 [read] Keywords:

Why your Notes directory suddenly grows several Gigabytes
Mon, Sep 24th 2012 3:08p   Jesper Kiaer
Today I was cleaning up they hardrive containing my Lotus Notes installation. It is installed on a Solid State Disk and it had only 5 Gigs left. It is known fact that a SSD must have plenty of free space otherwise it is going to crash and burn way too soon. I was looking to clean up my Notes installation a bit, but first I needed take a backup of it and I noticed it was very large. During the backup, which was actually a simple copy, I saw it took a long time to copy several files, hence they h [read] Keywords: lotus notes workspace

When the order is crucial - use of both compression and encryption on data.
Mon, May 7th 2012 6:46a   Jesper Kiaer
Sometimes the order in which things are done is really crucial. An example to this is the mix of encrypted and compressed data. Should you: Compress encrypted data ? or Encrypt compressed data? Due to the nature of encryption and compression the answer is of course very obvious, but I will anyhow back it with a small example. I have created some simple Java code which does the following: 1. Takes an XML file with domain names and creates an DES encrypted file from it. 2. Creates a compress [read] Keywords: java xml
