So you wanted to know what it's like to work in a NYC subway tunnel
Sun, Oct 27th 2013 2:04p   Jim Casale
NYC Transit released some videos that show the damaged caused by Super Storm Sandy and what is being done to repair that damage. In the second video the real action starts around the 2 minute mark. In one scene the worker is using a power hammer on the tunnel ceiling. Imagine if he poked a hole in that ceiling? Hello East River! (not really possible I would imagine). If you've ever taken a ride on a NYC Subway let's just say..it can sometimes be odorous. Imagine working in th [read] Keywords:

To my Dad...good-bye and may you rest in peace
Sun, Sep 29th 2013 4:49p   Jim Casale
My dad passed away Saturday night after making the decision he did not want to have dialysis anymore. He was supposed to last 2 to 3 weeks but I got a call this morning letting me know he had passed away overnight. He said he was tired and the pain was too much. I am having a hard time understanding that decision, but I realize I was not in his shoes and it was his decision to make. My dad and I didn't have the best relationship for the last 15 years or so. And it was not for lack of trying [read] Keywords:

Are you into 80's new wave/alternative music? Do you remember WLIR?
Fri, May 3rd 2013 5:40a   Jim Casale
If you've lived in the 80's and 90's and you were into new wave/alternative have I got good news for you. The premier radio station in the New York City area for new wave/alternative from 80's and 90's is back. And since it's online you don't have to live here to enjoy it. I remember listening to WLIR both at work and at home back in the day. I was never a pop music sort of guy and the songs WLIR picked were innovative and ground breaking. All of the other stations in the New Y [read] Keywords:

Does Bill Gates have nothing better to do?
Tue, Apr 9th 2013 4:07a   Jim Casale
I recently became aware of an initiative by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to track student information. The merits of such a system could be debated but what cannot be debated is the fact that not one New York City parent was asked, or even told, about this use of their child's data. Some of you may say that the age of privacy is gone with Social Media, etc being all the rage. This issue has nothing to do with Twitter, Facebook, etc. When I choose to use these services I d [read] Keywords: database exchange exchange facebook google security twitter

Windows 7 issue running under Linux KVM
Mon, Sep 10th 2012 9:17a   Jim Casale
I recently ran into a problem where all my Windows 7 vm's running under Linux KVM would start and then crash before the Windows login screen. All the other vm's (Windows 2008-2003, Windows XP, various flavors of Linux did not have an issue. I keep up to date on all patches on the host and the vm's so I figured it had to be something that was updated. I am still not sure which side of the equation is to blame but suffice to say, after much trial and error, I found by disabling the Windo [read] Keywords: linux vm

Phone Spam and Telemarketers

If you are like many Americans you are probably getting a bunch of spam phone calls even though you maybe on the FTC's Do Not Call list. To say the Do Not Call list is a joke would be an understatement. You can normally tell a spam phone call by the Caller ID such as Toll Free Call Name Unavailabl (000) 000-0000 Account Services Credit Card Services These are just some of the many fictitious names used by phone spammers. You can't kil yourself with soda but you can kill yourself on a bicycle
Thu, May 31st 2012 5:11p   Jim Casale
Our beloved Mayor of New York City has deemed sugary drinks larger than 16 oz's to be bad for you and wants to outlaw them for your safety. That same Mayor doesn't have a problem with you riding a bicycle in Manhattan traffic without a safety helmet. Huh? So in essence you can't be fat but you can be dead. For the record I don't think drinking a lot of soda is healthy for you but I also believe the proposed law is useless (as you can just buy four 16 oz sodas) [read] Keywords:

Is Chrome really the #1 browser?
Wed, May 23rd 2012 6:11a   Jim Casale
Recent headlines proclaim chrome is the #1 browser on the World Wide Web. I have to question how accurate that statement is and how did they get to the #1 spot if true. You have to wonder how much software bundling has to play in browser stats. It's no secret there are many "free" software packages out there that bundle additional software. How many people actually uncheck this option? And there is the wonderful world of statistics and how they are generated and co [read] Keywords: google

What's wrong with this picture - literally
Fri, Feb 10th 2012 5:05a   Jim Casale
A recent visit to my sons school shows me how inept New York City can be. There is a supposed to be a special entrance for the FDNY but I am wondering - how they are supposed to get over the concrete barriers that were installed? So now you have 3 schools on a campus that is fenced in with only one (main) entrance that the FDNY can use. I guess I shouldn't tell you the road from the main entrance to the 3 schools is too narrow for firetrucks to navigate. Unbe [read] Keywords:

The saddest and happiest day of our lives

Have you been working with VMware on your PC or laptop and noticed that coping files in the virtual machine to be extremely slow? It's not your imagination. DAOS is two years old
Mon, Feb 14th 2011 5:23a   Jim Casale
I never did get to ask the Product Managers at LS11 when they will add DAOS support to the Domino backup API. You'd think two years after introducing a really killer feature for Domino they would make it a bit easier to backup Domino when that killer feature is enabled. After setting up my reservation for the Disney Magical Express I found out that my roommate did not book his trip to get to the Disney Yacht and Beach Club. It's obvious the TSA has been under fire recently in the news.
