Time to up our game in how we demo XPages
Tue, Apr 30th 2013 4:01p   John D Head
I have seen quite a few XPages demos over the past few years. At conference, in webinars, and in sales calls. As I look back and critique myself, I have some thoughts to share so that as a community, if the quality of demos goes up, the community and the opportunities will grow. Typically, something like this is what I see in an XPages demo: There is nothing 'wrong' with this, but it is out of date. It could be showcasing one of the out of the box templates or something custom (a [read] Keywords: domino notes xpages application applications community development interface twitter

It can be hard to put into words how great an organization is. I have said many times on my blog how much I love working at PSC Group over the past 12+ years. But it always helps when others talk about it as well. Last week, both Mark Roden and Kathy Brown blogged about receiving their first star points in the PSC Group's 5 Points of Excellence program. It is our own internal career development program for employees. Application Modernization vs. Migration : When Apples to Apples doesn’t make sense
Thu, Apr 4th 2013 8:23a   John D Head
As the second calendar quota of 2013 has begun, I wanted to start a series of blog entries to talk about my day to day efforts and where I am having success and failures. I think the idea of application modernization is appealing to many, but there is not enough discussion for people to know what it means. Hopefully through this discussion that can change. As I talk with customers about projects, there is a lot of discussion around 'modernizing our applications.' IBM SmartCloud for Notes/Domino - You can Purchase a Single License with a Credit Card!
Mon, Feb 4th 2013 12:10p   John D Head
Last night while chatting about the IBM Connect 2013 conference and some after thoughts, a discussion came up with a person (they can reveal themselves if they want too) about how they probably had to move their email from a on-premises Notes/Domino solution to something else. They didn't want to maintain a Domino server any more. That led into a question on why IBM hasn't made SmartCloud easy for a single person or small company to order with a credit card. I am finally back home in Chicago after ten days in Orlando, FL for what has become my yearly pilgrimage to IBM Connect (formally known as Lotusphere or as I like to call it ConnectoSphere). Why does the Domino community have a "Domino or nothing" mentaility?
Tue, Jan 31st 2012 8:20a   John D Head
The above thought has been on my mind since the middle of December but I have not figured out how to blog about it until recently. Let's start with a public comment from Ed Brill's blog: 14 Erik Brooks | 1/26/2012 11:46:38 AM @Ed - I actually *did* know. I'd still like to hear the reasons why this direction was chosen, because it's eyebrow-raising. My thoughts on the Lotusphere2012 announcements around Lotus Symphony and Apache OpenOffice.org
Tue, Jan 24th 2012 11:41a   John D Head
At Lotusphere2012, IBM made a pretty big announcements around Lotus Symphony. Let's cover them in order of significance, starting with smallest first. IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0.1 ships Some great new features like the Speakers View and the one million row support make this a great point release. Not sure if there will be an overlay install for the Notes client but working on that. I am very happy that 2012 is here. I don't know about many of you, but 2011 is a year I am glad to put behind me. Professionally, 2011 was amazing. Speaking at Lotusphere 2011, BLUG, UKLUG, IamLUG, and MWLUG on topics that were brand new for me. 2011 was also the year I fully embraced that I am in a sales role, not a delivery role. The season of emotions
Wed, Nov 23rd 2011 8:20a   John D Head
I love this time of year. The air is crisp. The food changes to be more hearty. The memories of my youth come back. Thanksgiving leads into the holiday season that becomes Christmas. My favorite time of the year ... well, after college football falls. The difference is that this year there is an emotional weight attached to the holidays. The first without my father. A Thanksgiving without my father yelling at the Lions to play better. It then leads into the 6 month anniversary and another tri [read] Keywords:

Remembering Dad: Mexico’s Day of the Dead

As this holiday season is going to be many firsts for me without Dad around, Halloween was the beginning. My Dad loved Halloween. For the first time in sixty years, the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois have won 4 games without losing a game to start the season. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. Everyone has their own story about where they were that day. I was in Stockholm on a Baltic Cruise. Our British tour guide told us someone attacked the Pentagon. Our reaction was one of laughter ... who could possibly attack the US? The IBM loss of University of Nebraska - the missing piece of the discussion
Wed, Jul 6th 2011 2:30p   John D Head
There has been a bunch of discussion about The University of Nebraska dropping the use of their in-house IBM Lotus Notes implementation and deciding on a cloud based solution. Tom Duff was the first to write about it on PL, and Palmi Lord wrote about it. It seems that Google and Microsoft were the only two players in the game and that Microsoft 'paid' U of N $25,000 to get the deal.
