The two things (in my opinion) holding back cloud computing from truly taking off in the enterprise are security and compliance. With an abstract concept like cloud computing, telling your security department that you are moving the company’s sensitive data and mission-critical processing to a “cloud” might get some laughs.
Exactly where is the data physically located? Are there other companies using the same equipment? Who has access to these systems?
How is data transferred to and from the cloud? What operating systems run the cloud? What if the cloud provider goes out of business?
Gartner also released a series of research papers on cloud computing in June, comparing cloud-computing delivery methods to the Industrial Revolution because of their potential to change the way IT services are delivered and acquired.
"Cloud computing has become the latest in a series of popular industry terms and, as such, is used in many contradictory ways," Gartner said in a report titled "Key Issues for Cloud Computing." "Underneath the fog, there are trends -- such as global-class architecture, Web platforms, massively scalable processing and the Internet -- that are converging to fuel the cloud-computing phenomenon. The platform angle, in particular, will enable composite applications and composite businesses, and has the potential to have a profound impact on IT and business. Organizations must evolve to deal with the changes, and understand what hype is safe to ignore."

SERVER_TRANSINFO_RANGE vs. update Cluster Performance
Fri, Jan 9th 2009 5:46p John Willemse Select a value for SERVER_TRANSINFO_RANGE such that 2 raised to the power SERVER_TRANSINFO_RANGE is a reasonable upper bound for expansion factor values. For example, if SERVER_TRANSINFO_RANGE=6, then we expect that the expansion factor values will not rise about 64. VMware optimize Linux guest operating systems
Tue, Dec 9th 2008 3:21a John Willemse Linux guest operating systems are greatly affected by the System clock of the kernel. Linux 2.6 defaults to a 1000Hz clock tick rate, and that will put a strain on the virtual environment, and can cause problems with system time keeping. Linux 2.4 does not have this problem as the clock runs at 100Hz. If running Linux 2.6 based virtual machines, re-compile the kernel to run at 100Hz, or use one of the newer kernels (2.6.22+) which use the No HZ dynamic clock. Centos offers community

VMware Server 2 does not recognize WHS hard disk
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 12:48p John Willemse During the installation of Windows Home Server (WHS) on VMware Server 2.0 the hard disk was not recognized.
VMware suggests by default that you create SCSI hard drives when you create a new VM based on the Win2003 profile.
Turns out that WHS will not recognize these drives:
You will have to shutdown the VM, remove and optionally delete the original SCSI disk, and create new IDE drive.
Remember to make it bigger than 65GB, and now installation should run smoothly.

This causes e-mail notifications to be sent to the owners of past reservations. Is there any way to prevent these e-mails?. In one particular case, the purge agent was disabled. See Fig 1: Purge Documents Agent
Once the purge agent is enabled, there is no need to manually clean the database on a regular basis and no notification e-mails will be sent.

Separate thread to do full text indexing
Sat, Sep 13th 2008 7:50a John Willemse Update_Fulltext_Thread=1
Full-text indexing operations occurring on the Domino server can cause performance degradation. By default, the full-text indexing function is performed by the update threads that are responsible for updating views. This can quickly translate into a bottleneck for update processing on the Domino server.
Setting the Update_Fulltext_Thread parameter to 1 allows use of a separate thread to do full text indexing so that long full text indexes don't delay view updates. [read] Keywords: admin

Defining the number of databases cached simultaneously

Domino Tuning Parameters in notes.ini
Defining the number of databases cached simultaneously
If your server has sufficient memory, you can improve the performance of the server by increasing the number of databases that Lotus Domino can cache in memory at one time. To do so, use the NSF_DbCache_Maxentries statement in the NOTES.INI file. The default value is 25 or the NSF_Buffer_Pool_Size divided by 300 KB, whichever value is greater. The maximum number of database [read] Keywords: domino

Differences between Domino and xSP Domino
Sat, Sep 6th 2008 9:52a John Willemse Most of the features and power of Domino are available in the xSP configuration. However, in order to provide the security model which hides all users and applications in one organization from another, some constraints have been applied to the xSP configuration. The differences between an xSP and a non-xSP configuration are as follows:
